Judging solely by the photo of the van, I hope that's not Apple's attempt at a self-driving car. It looks buggy as hell. Is it attempting a U-Turn in the middle of the street or what?!

Edit: Perhaps it's using Apple Maps for navigation hence the need for the U-Turn? God help us all.

Honestly AAPL has so much money that they should be building crazy things that only dreams can think of (i.e. A time machine).

Interesting. Super easy UI's, something no car company seems to get right, including Tesla; an area where Apple excels.

Steve Jobs had already said autos interested him and we know Jony Ive and his newest hire Marc Newson are big fans as well. And Eddie Cue sits on Ferrari's board so Apple getting into the auto industry (in whatever form) wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Um, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oksetv3i90

How does getting into the auto industry equate to being focused?

Different critics say different things. It probably isn't one person contradicting themselves.

It is a worry that Apple might spread themselves too thin. More items are becoming hi-tech, and so of interest to Apple. The Watch for example. Cars are becoming much more hi-tech and already involving Google. So I see potential for Apple interest.

But I do hope this is about mapping and a quicker way to get flyover data. Hopefully they can also start to get the basics right, such as street names that start with "St", not "Saint" as Apple has them.

No, it's more worrisome that Apple does not do any R&D into new techs, innovation and inventions. Apple can't just depends on iPhone forever. They need to come out something new and exciting from time to time. iPod is dead, and soon so is iPhone and iPad. What's next? It has to start from now.

An Apple self-driving car could be great. As long as it uses Google maps for navigation!

If it's a self driving car using Apple maps, them it better be a hybrid street legal amphibious car. Otherwise it will sink like an anchor when Apple maps puts the car in a lake.

Machines are less likely to haywire than people.

So, what happens when a major automated car company starts re-calling their entire line over some fault ?

Machine aren't perfect, neither are humans, but at lease "WE" have control at all times. instead of leaving machines to go through an entire loop, only then we can stop it, but it will be too late by then...

This is why drivers still must be present "just in case" so much for self driving technology..

I would have actually excepted to be sitting in the seat,,, not having a steering wheel at all..... That would fully automated... But we'll probably never get to that part,

Taking bets on how long before Samsung comes out with their own car?

Samsung CEO: I just heard Apple is working on a car, let's get it out before Apple does and we'll say Apple copied us!

Samsung already has conventional cars in South Korea. I saw them at the Samsung hotel while I was visiting the Samsung theme park which itself is a rip off of Disney world.

Here's how the car looked like:
https://www.google.co.in/search?q=samsung+car&client=safari&hl=en-gb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=fXHZVNafOYyiuQSF0oD4Dw&ved=0CCgQ7Ak&biw=320&bih=460

Even though the company is Samsung Renault, the cars and their steering only have the brand Samsung on them.

An Apple car is a pipe dream, but let's just all dream for a minute. A Jony Ive designed CAR. I can't even imagine how incredible that would be.

But they still need to focus. It's tempting to go off and do all these things when you have all this money burning a hole in your pocket. Some people want Apple to buy Netflix, others Tesla, and still others Twitter. I hear people saying Apple should become a record label or a bank or an MVNO. Now this rumor comes out and people say Apple should get in the automobile business. It seems to me the biggest reason Apple is so successful is because of focus, because they say 'no' more than they say 'yes'.

I remember that car designed by Homer Simpson...

Great, ...

Will only run on Apple Tires

Will only run on Apple Batteries that can't be changed so you have to get a new car every 3 years.

Can only be serviced at an Apple store

Will cost twice as much as comparable cars.

Wouldn't everyone want to drive around bearing a big Apple logo ?

Of course you would..... With siri integration, CarPlay, and fully automated from an iOS device, it would know what time your going to leave...

All traffic jams would be avoided, while probably taking you on a longer route, so then you'll have to explain to your boss why u always end up 15 minutes late for work everyday...

When u tell him you drive "an Apple Car" a dismay look on his face.

I can more easily imagine a deliberate leak (for reasons we do not necessarily understand) than an employee sending out an unauthorized email about what Tim Cook had for lunch, let alone tipping Apple's hand on a future product.

Exactly. It's a hanging offense.

Hmm, with 10s of thousands of employees I don't think near perfect secrecy year over year is likely. It certainly can't be assumed. People will have bad days. People will drunk and forget their top secret phone in a bar. Stuff happens.

But it might just be an Apple employee pulling Tesla's chain. A rumor like this won't budge Apple's stock, but it might hurt Tesla's stock for a few days. Let's see if the mainstream press runs with this. There really isn't much to go on. But anything Apple related is news. And not just to the folks on MacRumors.

i wouldn't be caught dead driving round in one of these vehicles...

Just give me the controls... I do not need some machine to go haywire on a public road..

The best part would be deniability. If you get into an accident, you can claim it was Apple's fault. You get caught speeding, blame a software update. You get caught crashed into a guard rail near water, blame Apple maps. You get accused of a crime, and your vehicle was spotted near the scene, claim you were home in bed and the car drove there on its own in the middle of the night.

Imagine the possibilities. You could even claim that you were framed because someone hacked into your car and remotely caused it to be somewhere.

This car could be the scapegoat everyone needs.

CNBC seems to report just about anything BI publishes so it won't surprise me if they talk about it tomorrow.

As already stated, Samsung has already been in the car business for years. Apple would be the late entry here. But, maybe Apple will beat HTC to market ;)

i guess we should be expecting a samsung self-driving car by this time next year...

And the price of a Telsa would probably triple.

i doubt it would triple, but it would probably never go down in price, where the average person could eventually afford one.
