It's Known That Steve Jobs Was Interested In Making Cars

Jobs thought this was an area Apple could go into, and with their background in electronics, batteries, software and design it's certainly something Apple could do. The problem is they have no mechanical manufacturing experience, although presumably they could either outsource it or possibly buy a distressed car manufacturer who has decent, fairly new factories and make a run at the market that way.

With the kind of cash stockpile they're sitting on, they could also just hire the right folks and build their own manufacturing capacity.

Keep in mind that all-electric cars are far less mechanically complex than internal combustion engine cars.

It might not be a traditional car though. Maybe Apple's designers have come up with a feasible design for some sort of computer-controlled individual transportation pod, a reasonably inexpensive (say, $20,000) gadget that gets you from point A to point B in comfort - something perfect for stop-and-go traffic, especially in Asia, but also in crowded metro areas in the US. It drives while you read your iPad...

For more reasons than I care to post, the Model S is the best car ever made in practically every regard except style. Let Apple fix that.

A car? lol

Can we just get wi-fi working Tim?

Actually, it totally makes sense for Apple to shift focus to cars. If they can't provide us with reliable connections to get data through the Internet, they'll just provide us an alternate means to obtain the information. We can use a new Apple car to go get the information we are seeking in person. Welcome to the new Information Super-Highway.

Apple is working on a project that will "give Tesla a run for its money."According to the site's source, who was verified to be an Apple employee, Tesla employees are "jumping ship" and choosing to work at Apple because of this unidentified project.

This can only mean I'm finally going to get the flying car I was promised so long ago, and if not, Apple is surely doomed.

How much more visionary can you get than someone who, in 1998 left an executive position at Compaq, a very powerful company at the time and went to work for Apple, a company that was being written off by just about everyone?

Battery technology would be the one area that would get me excited. Fact is, the fact that battery technology is largely stuck in the 90s is what is holding back so many new possibilities. Think about the Apple Watch with a 7, or 14 or dare say it, even a 30 day battery life. Or an iPhone that lasts a week on a charge. Or a three day MacBook Air. Those things would be game changers.

7 or 14 or 30 days on a watch? That's still pitiful. I like watches that I can just replace the battery every 5 to 7 years for $1.

And, yes I've had multifunction touch screen watches even back in the 1980's that did that. Granted they didn't talk to a cell phone, but they did everything we could think of back then. Gàmes, calculators with scientific functions, and of course all the usual suspects in watch / timer functions. All with a very accurate touch screen and 5+ years of battery life.

I think part of the problem today is that while we continue to find new applications and ways of utilizing more modern technology, we're not making great strides in shrinking that technology and making it more energy efficient (such as chips like Bluetooth, etc.).

We add new functions, but have hit a barrier of circuit sizing, etc. When we can reinvent a new path at the rate we used to, then we'll see some amazing stuff.

I'm sure the Apple was referring to Tesla's info-tainment system. i.e. Carplay. That's all. Move-along-kiddies.

If Apple did start building and selling cars I know I'd be among the first in line to buy one. Driving an Apple car would be an incredible experience - like nothing on earth today.

No, it's more worrisome that Apple does not do any R&D into new techs, innovation and inventions. Apple can't just depends on iPhone forever. They need to come out something new and exciting from time to time. iPod is dead, and soon so is iPhone and iPad. What's next? It has to start from now.

How do you know that Apple doesn't do any R&D into the areas you named? Let me take a wild guess and say that you think Apple should do what Google does, which is your idea of doing R&D. Assuming my guess is correct, why don't you tell me what all that R&D at Google has led to. For all the money Google has thrown at its science projects, ads still make up more than 95% of Google's revenue.

There's more to coming out with a successful product than spending money like a drunken sailor on R&D. Discipline, focus, and execution are just as important.

Might be an expansion of Carplay where its a tablet-like unit that gets installed into any car and makes it an "iCar".

First of all, it's still more stable than Android/Windows software/hardware, so let's not get your panties bunched up.

Who says Apple can't work on a new product AND fix any existing issues at the same time. Guess what, Google works on tons on stuff even though they have lots of issues with android/Google Plus, etc.

I’m forced to work with Windows from 9-5 everyday, add to that the time I spend with Parallels or booted to Windows for gaming and it’s only just now I realise that it’s longer than I spend on any other platform.
I say forced and what I mean is that I’d use a Mac and the Mac OS all the time given the choice but to say that it’s less stable ???? I’m not sure about that anymore.
Let’s say 9 hours a day Windows and 4.5 hours a day on the Mac. I suffer many more software crashes and bugs on the OSX, (a fresh install), side of things than I do in Windows.
Don’t use Android so I can’t comment there. Windows has come a long way and is every bit as stable if not more so than the Mac these days, (that includes catering for a number of hardware and software combos that Apple simply could not comprehend). On the whole I don’t mind betting that you people are just being stereo typical of a bygone age where Windows was a mess. A long time ago dude. A LOOOOOONNNNGGGG time ago.

Apple need to get back to quality hardware and software and focus less on it being thinner and draining the consumer of money at every turn with inflated hardware prices.

How do you figure that?

The sound on my first-gen shuffle was great. The sound on my 2012 MBP not so much. Trend going the wrong way... ;)

I agree, they need to get the crappy iTunes sound quality sorted first. The exact same files played in any other app are distortion free, how does that work?

Well, good for you I guess. I'm running 8.1 and reported a bug 1 year ago to MS that's STILL NOT FIXED. I lose my network connection, a problem with the network stack, ever 2-4 days. My opinion of them is thus not so high (to put it mildly...). Yet, I'm OK with Windows 8.1. It had decent performance and capabilities, though multitasking and memory management is still way worse than Linux for god knows what reason. It is not like they haven'T had more than a decade to fix things!

As for Windows 8.1 being more stable, you must be one those lucky one. Look at how many patches Windows get (and Read the release notes) and see how "stable" it is.

Perhaps Windows 8.1 is stable only when you use it in Parallels with a Mac #

Companies like Apple, with 98,000 employees, can only work on one thing at a time. I thought that this was common knowledge?

Soon enough people will be jailbreaking cars...

Now where did I put that ignition to USB cable....

Am I the only one who would be freaked out by an Apple car?

I mean, it would be absolutely gorgeous, made of glass and chrome, with a dashboard so shiny you just want to lick it. And cloud-like seats that help you out of the car, and ease you in with a contented sigh. And it's so light that if it runs over a baby's foot it just tickles. And it runs on sunshine and laughter and the exhaust is just sudsy bubbles.

But it being Apple, there would have to be some flaw that would set the forums alight. "Hey Apple, I can't get it into reverse, and the ride height is a bit weird. "That's because our cars go forwards, not backwards. Upwards not downwards.. you're driving it wrong. If you want to be a Teslave, then go right ahead..

Think I'll wait for the S version before buying.
