Get an Ipad 2 for playing with apps and use the Iphone 4s just for calls. That might be the solution...

Mine has the problem on the first day I got hold of it. Did the reset and clean install but still same battery issue, depleted in 4 hours or less. The body gets warm and doesn't cool down even when in standby mode.

I called Apple. They had it replaced in no time. I bought it online so they pick-up the defective one and gave me the replacement on the same day.

Cheers Apple!

NB: Try network reset setting. It helps too.

Amen!

Just let me turn off my damn 3G! It destroys my battery life.

This is the biggest culprit! If you look at the specs on the ATT iPhone, from Apple, the battery life spec is almost DOUBLE if you turn off 3G. If you have Wi-Fi at home and at work, you really don't need 3G. Getting emails will take a couple of seconds more on Edge, but usually waiting for the network takes longer than the actual email download.

Wi-Fi is MUCH faster than 3G or even 4G, even on a slower network.

Another reason to stick with ATT. Verizon doesn't give you this option, and I don't think Sprint does either.

My HTC Sensation seems to turn 3G off when Im using wifi.

Did a clean install, don't have exchange and location services yet. Don't have anything sync, it seems to be fine now. Just have to add everything manually now.

Well, the email/time zone trick didn't work for me. Usage/standby still nearly identical. ;(

3G vs Edge

My HTC Sensation seems to turn 3G off when Im using wifi.

All iPhones since the 3G appear to do this also. (You don't see the 3G symbol, you see the WiFi symbol).

However, when TALKING on an iPhone with 3G on, you are using the 3G network, and your battery drain is double that over using Edge towers.

The other reason I normally leave 3G off is it seems I get less dropped calls. I figure if everyone is on the 3G towers, I'm less likely to get "bumped" if I'm using Edge.

Seems like the same stuff gets mentioned in here repeatedly: Time Zone, iCloud, etc. I pulled my spiffy brand-new Verizon 4S from its charger today at 1 PM local time. It's now a little past 10 PM. I have Time Zone off, iCloud off, wifi off, Bluetooth on. I'm at 94% battery life. Seems reasonable to me.

Did you use it at all in those 9 hours?

I'm also having the issue on my iPhone 4. After sitting on my desk at work for a couple of hours, the phone is really warm and the battery has drained considerably (30%). Before iOS 5, I would *easily* get through the day on 1 charge. Now, I need to charge the phone by late afternoon, otherwise my phone will be dead by 5 or 6 PM..

Here is my story and researches:
I had iphone4, and never had battery drain issues even after updatind to ios5.
Now i use 4s, i restored data from backup from iphone 4. And its battery life is horrible - 5% drain every hour in stand-by.
Researches:
- battery is back ok if i remove SIM card, or enable airplane mode, or insert sim card but not type pincode.
- the following steps did not help: disabling localization services, disabling cellural data, bluetooth, icloud, sending logs
- i inserted sim card into my old iphone 4 with ios5, and still no problem with batter on iPhone 4

I'm still working on this.

And now we see a reason for a replaceable battery.

This kind of problem can be managed with a phone that has a replaceable battery, just pop out the battery, pop in a fully charged one and recharge the empty battery.

With a phone that won't allow you to remove the battery, the phone ends up being glued to the charging station...

(I guess you could buy two phones, but then you'd still would have to swipe the sim cards...)

Maybe the new feature of the iPhone 5 will be a replaceable battery?

My iPhone 4 battery after upgrading to iOS5 died twice overnight. Think I have narrowed it down to Reminders. I get EMAIL via an Exchange server and reminders for Exchange is on, the battery drains, but not with other services on. I do see a higher than normal usage rate with Facebook notifications on too.

No probe on 3GS

Updated to iOS 5 on day of release and have had no battery issues. Also noted a significant speed increase of all functions since the upgrade. Battery probe seem to be related to the 4S on the whole!:(

Propably they didn't improve the battery sufficiently because they wanted to keep the design of the Iphone 4. Maybe there wasn`t enough space for a better battery...

I leave my BT on all the time but rarely use wifi and at first the battery was crap but once I reset/cycled the battery it has been just a good as my old 4 if not better which is acceptable for me.

My Battery life on 4s is similar to what I used to have on the 3Gs. That said, I was hoping that it will last a bit longer, but then again I am using this phone much more than I'm using my 3Gs so that could be the reason...

So turn off al the new magic features seems to improve a little, you know i have to make some phone calls sometimes.

Ok so im not crazy, their actually is a battery problem. I remember when i had the iphone 4 i put beta iOS5 on it and enabled iCloud, my abttery drained so quick i thought i was using android. lol.

Well now i got the iPhone 4s an don't have iCloud setup because i need the battery life to be good, but it still runs out quick! Normally without iCloud on my iphone 4 would never have to charge my iPhone at all, lasted me from 9am to 11pm easily. The 4S without iCloud drops to 40% at about 5pm!!!

Something is wrong for sure. Cant wait until they fix it! Knowing apple it'll be soon!

Knowing it's Apple it won't be soon. They are only quick to respond to patching jailbreak exploits. And even then, it takes at least 2 weeks. They were also very slow to respond to the antenna issue last year (and Steve Jobs still thought it was a ploy by Google. lol.). However, I have more faith in Tim Cook than Jobs. He seems more caring and less arrogant.

Apple always does this with new iPhones !

They release a "defective" product

The Jailbreakers release their exploit

and one day later........

Apple MAGICALLY has a Fix and a new update to "Fix" the problem leaving all jailbreakers up Poop creek with out an Update

Its so obvious, they do it every year

Duhhh !!!

Wow. I couldn't have said it any better. This release plan of release now, fix later is getting tiresome. Especially for a phone that has basically been in "testing" for over 2 years. What exactly is Apple testing during all this time anyway?

There must be some very strange variables here.

I have a 64GB 4s, I use the living snot out of the phone, all my phone lines are forwarded to the 4s. My BlueTooth is on, but off on the headset (While I'm at home) Phone, Wifi is on and I run on Wifi while I'm at home, Mail and Message apps running, and ICloud is on. on a normal day of use, my 4s has about 40% at bedtime, that is tons better than my Droid Incredible, that sometimes I had to charge by noon!!

Maybe some of you are running too many apps or there is something different. It's hard to tell without testing side by side.

So far, I'm very pleased with my 4s battery usage compared to my previous Droid Incredible.

In general, battery life is significantly worse with the 4s compared to the 4, but on two occasions it went into some kind of loop (presumably...I couldn't detect what it was) and drained in about 5 hours (became warm during that time period). In the first case, I did a restore and the problem went away for awhile. In the second I discovered the drained iPhone after it had shut down, recharged it, and it's back up with its normal (relatively poor by comparison) battery consumption.

Interesting, I had it on airplane mode for over 2 hrs and the difference between standby and usage time only differed by about 30 minutes. Yes, it was in my pocket the entire time.
