I use Apple Maps exclusively. I like the UI, I like how it integrates with the system, and the directions are spot-on (for the most part). I only had one bad time with it a few years back when it was a mess for everyone. It was a nasty detour, but Google saved the day that day. I tried it again later and it's been fine ever since. I still have an Android phone in my car as a backup though.

As I wrote above living abroad in Europe.

I just checked the village in the Alps where I was born.

There is a lot more information in google maps than in Apple Maps.

For example google maps (zooming in) also shows house numbers. Maps doesn't.

And what blow my mind. That village also now features in Street View (added only a few weeks ago).

Street View was always the weak spot with streets and locations in the Alps.

Took google a long time to drive from the USA to Europe.

(A case could also be made for Pages and Keynote. Apple should team up with Microsoft and ship every OS with Word or Powerpoint. The last time when I used Word or Powerpoint on a Mac (although many years ago) it seemed to be well integrated.)
I don't understand why more people don't use iWork. MS Office is always SLOW, and the Apple apps are fast because they are lighter programs. It doesn't cost anything, and there's no subscriptions. Even if you pay one time for Office, it might have a limited lifespan like Office 2019. Plus no Copilot.

I'd lose my will to live if I had to use Microsoft Word or Powerpoint over Pages or Keynote

It sounds like you don't even use Office, either, so why do you have an opinion about this? Do you even use office software?

as for powerpoint vs keynote, powerpoint was the choice due to dealing with wintel world. pages vs word was a non-event, always used something like bare bones lite and LaTex to prepare papers. maps vs google maps is a who cares for me, grapher was replaced by numbers/excel for quick dirty plots as for how apple deploys its resources I assume they either have market research or strong c suite support for their decisions. -- bottom line kvetching again

Who says that I don't use Office?

My work environment is Office 365 (and Linux).

But as a white collar worker in a big organisation it is not my choice (although I cannot complain because I write a lot of stuff in LaTeX).

Maybe different in the USA.

But walk into an office with white collar workers in Europe and you will meet people sitting in front of Windows screens.

I don't think you can buy standalone Keynote or Pages for Windows (I have never used the web interface which would make it possible for Windows users to use pages).

I was even thinking of buying Powerpoint for my Macbook because I often give my presentations in Keynote (converted from Powerpoint) on my MacBook when I travel and not my assigned Windows work laptop.

I've heard from others that the directions in Europe are still broken with AM. It's sad, because I think it has potential to be really great for everyone if they'd just get their act together. No excuses after this much time has passed. At least you have alternatives I guess.

I use maps all the time; why take out my phone to plan routes or see how long some drive is when I'm already at my Mac and can type faster, see it on a bigger display and just send it to my phone right after?
I haven't used word or powerpoint since 2005, just use pages which is free and more than adequate and keynote, which consistently produces better-looking slides than what powerpoint-using colleagues produce... Who are you to declare them dead just because you don't use them? Other people have different needs, and it's great they bundle these in for those who want them. Nobody is forcing you to use them, so don't ask that others can't.

I use Apple Maps all the time. It’s a lot nicer looking and the 3D view is great (I live in an area that’s fully 3D mapped). I just google for better POIs since Yelp is TRASH. I can’t stand the look of Google Maps.
for me Apple Maps on the Mac is just nice because it has the great ecosystem integration and it's the mapping tool I use on my phone so it's recognizable. I switched years ago from google maps to Apple Maps because google maps was just too slow to be reliable on roundabouts: the map turned so slowly that in new places you had no idea which turnoff to take unless you had counted which one it had to be before entering the roundabout; and by the time the maps realized you actually left the roundabout you might have already missed your next turn.

I can get it if you need excel for complicated tables. Keynote is better than powerpoint, pages is good for making beautiful text documents; Numbers is good when you need simple tables for example for book keeping for a small business or very simple statistics. The thing with numbers though is that it's made primarily for making beautiful tables, not for complex calculations. The moment you need to do more intensive things with tables, numbers doesn't cut it and you need something more heavyweight like excel. So I get it. But yes, 90% or more of people would be just fine just using iWork.

When Apple started showing ads in Maps, I rage quit and started using Google Maps. I did that for about three months and now I'm back. Like you said, it's just so much less cluttered and smoother. I know Google has the better database, but at least for where I live Apple Maps is fine.
When I want to find something I use Google Maps, and then I navigate there using Apple Maps. Especially when using public transportation! (EU)

Then your experience with powerpoint is basically opening files that were not made with the program itself, with a different set of features and a different set of pre-installed fonts. Try to make a couple of presentations in keynote itself, you'll immediately see why Keynote is great to have installed on the Mac. it's an awesome program for making dynamic, beautiful slides.

No compatibility with ODF files. Having to do a double conversion is a nogo.

LibreOffice works just fine on Apple Silicon Macs and the price is right.

claris, I thought I had fallen into a time warp, brought back apple ii memories , does this qualify as a flashback ' what a long strange trip its been'

I don't use Grapher. I'm guessing that it's only useful for people who use complicated Texas Instruments calculators for high-level math such as trigonometry and calculus. I never took those classes.

I use and love Apple Maps. It's been many years since it disappointed me, and I trust it to give me accurate directions without logging my trips and reporting it to big tech.....Google!

Yelp is definitely trash. I can’t understand why they would outsource reviews to a dead company like Yelp. I interviewed with them15 years ago when some thought they were “cool” - not for me then, not for me now.
