Me. I have both, but I only ever use Word against my will. I used Pages as a professional writer for over a decade, it’s a much more pleasant experience.
If you are freelancer or maybe a small independent business owner - yes.

But the harsh reality is.

The corporate world uses Windows + Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

I wish the corporate world would be using macOS (but not gonna happen in my lifetime).

okay seriously who uses pages over Microsoft word

Add mine to the several affirmative replies already posted. MS Office apps are ridiculous. I feel they are getting between myself and my work, whereas the iWork apps are allowing me to do my work.

Word is a great example of an overstuffed, bloated, overcomplicated UI for something that should be as simple as word processing.

I understand that you don't need to use Grapher (I've never used it either!) but it's literally not doing anything negative by having it installed on your computer in case you need it.

Calling Maps a dead Mac app is truly crazy though, they've changed it a ton in the last 15 years to improve it. 😛

And yes, people would pay money for things like Pages. They did from 2005 to 2013 until Apple made it free for everyone. My dad did, and that's when I started using the iWork apps in the first place.

Use Maps and you will loose the will to live.

I will use Apple Maps and Safari until the day I die!

I don't know how significant it is, but, the freestanding app version of Google Earth is Intel only and will stop working sometime soon. No sign of an update. Of course, some may prefer the web version ...

Regardless, as for Apple Maps, I always use it instead of Google Maps when I can. (There are certain deficiencies in Apple Maps when it comes to trip planning.) On the occasion of having to use Google Maps, I always enjoy being reminded that the Center of the Universe is in Tulsa. 😉

It is not so much the look.

But Apple Maps never finds anything (okay it may be different in the USA).
Yup, pins are often in the wrong place, opening hours often wrong. Why should I have to report inaccuracies all the time. I’m here to use the product (maps) not train your algorithm.

Formatting in all MS products is garbage, constantly battling with itself.
Apple office desktop office software I gave up years ago as its feels so alien to MS stuff.

both seem polished turds with zero desire by the companies to make them truly great / ie just work as intended

Out of interest what are you using instead of the Office suite or iWork?

Work I have no choice but to use MS stuff as it’s what my organisation uses. Facilitator in teams is pretty good tbh But can be amusingly bad.

I barely use my Mac’s (2011 intel & a m3 mini) nowadays. So much half baked software stuffed with too many features. Keep it simple & work easily. Apple has lost its way when it comes to software

I use Apple Maps all the time. It’s a lot nicer looking and the 3D view is great (I live in an area that’s fully 3D mapped). I just google for better POIs since Yelp is TRASH. I can’t stand the look of Google Maps.
I live in a rural backwater in the UK and Apple Maps is absolutely dreadful. I agree that the £D view is great if you live in an area where it's available.

I used Pages as a freelancer, as a full time employee in various sized agencies, and in massive corporate contracting roles. There were very few instances where I ever needed to launch Word, especially as I could always export as docx if needed.

The only MSFT Office tool that's better than the Apple version is Excel. Word and PPT are trash.

(If the word would revolve around me, we would be in big trouble).

But this piqued my interest.

For what do you use grapher?

Even 30 years ago Grapher was a gimmick.

I cannot remember an instance where grapher would have given me something I really need.

Coming back to the OPs post.

Yes I can understand he moans about Grapher and Maps.

Apple will most likely have people or teams looking after Grapher and Maps. Waste of resources.

Instead wouldn't we need more manpower making Safari more stable? Or the whole system a better experience?

There is probably other bloatware in my Apps folder which is dead in the water (and what is worse one cannot easily delete it from the system by not going rogue).
your mistake is in thinking you know anything about Apple's manpower allocation. With their piles of money they can have all the people to work on their apps that they could possibly want, without the advice of people who know literally nothing about the inner workings of the company. Safari has exactly the number working on is as Apple wants.

I wish they would drag more software developers over to Safari.

Safari is not a great a example of 'bug free software'.

Or maybe assigning more people to 'Shut Down'.

Even after 30 or 40 years the macOS will not shut down without manual intervention (e.g. I am forced to close Apps whereas the task was delegated to the Shut Down command).

I nearly fell off my chair.

I didn't know that Apple ships macOS 26 with "Grapher."

I think I must have used it in 1995 the last time.

And then the damp squib Maps.

Use Maps and you will loose the will to live.

Or let me ask: "Would anyone of you pay money for Grapher or Apple Maps?"

(A case could also be made for Pages and Keynote. Apple should team up with Microsoft and ship every OS with Word or Powerpoint. The last time when I used Word or Powerpoint on a Mac (although many years ago) it seemed to be well integrated.)
This post is just ragebait 🤣

Just because it doesn't fit your workflow doesn't mean it's a dead app. You named some of the most popular apps.

Yes, tons of people use Grapher, you see it mentioned all the time in YouTube videos on science/math channels.

Maps is great and lots of people, myself included, use it all the time. I think people who hate Maps have't tried it since 2016. It's far surpassed Google Maps for me personally.

Pages and Keynote, also used all the time. I use these nearly daily along with Numbers. Keynote is far better than Powerpoint too. While Pages and Numbers are definitely not as powerful as Word or Excel that's also their strength. Word and Excel have tons of bloat, and using them on Mac is a pain because Microsoft doesn't have proper help docs for the Mac version of these apps.

Sometimes you just need to write some quick documents or have some quick spreadsheets and it's so much nicer just firing up one of those two apps vs the Microsoft equivalent.

I use Maps daily. Yes. Every day.

I use Apple Maps. You couldn’t pay me to use Google Maps. I use Google products a little as absolutely possible. I don’t like using spyware. And yes, EVERYTHING they make is just spyware. Docs, Sheets, Drive, Chrome…

I don't understand why more people don't use iWork. MS Office is always SLOW, and the Apple apps are fast because they are lighter programs. It doesn't cost anything, and there's no subscriptions. Even if you pay one time for Office, it might have a limited lifespan like Office 2019. Plus no Copilot.

Well, nobody needs CoPilot.

Why don’t you just buy a Chrome Book or whatever and go all out Google. You might be happier.
Google chromebooks are junk.

Cannot see how this is helpful.

I am waiting until someone wants to snake oil sell me a Microsoft Surface.

When Apple started showing ads in Maps, I rage quit and started using Google Maps. I did that for about three months and now I'm back. Like you said, it's just so much less cluttered and smoother. I know Google has the better database, but at least for where I live Apple Maps is fine.
Where did you see the ads in Apple Maps? I haven’t noticed any and I always assumed that Google Maps had some, too.
