We have no way to know if that’s true. (Also: there is increasing evidence that the A14 and M1 - at least the SoC chip - are essentially the same).
They are not the same chip.
Also, the evidence is directly from Tim Cook‘s mouth, when he said that they we’re developing a new family of processors “ specifically for the Mac.”
The “M” series is specifically for the Mac. Not for the Apple TV, not for iPads, not for any other weird products you can think of, just for Macs.

That’s silly logic. Two nearly identical chips can have the same name. And if you’ve been following along on Anandtech and various technical sites, there is ample evidence that the differences between a14 and m1 are comparatively slight. Same core designs, etc. Just more of them.

As much as I want it to be an Apple TV or the Airtags, it’s very unlikely that Apple would launch those products with a mere press release.

This is most likely a spec bump for HomePod with a U1 chip. It’s odd that the mini has it and the bigger HomePod is not only running a very old processor and doesn’t have U1. They may also add U1 to AirPods Pro.

Watch my words, like the iMac Pro, the HomePod will be discontinued too.

With the renewed talk of AirTags, you then have to wonder if they’re going to be announcing both the regular AirTags and the AirTag Pros simultaneously.🤔
you forgot the inevitable AirTag mini... even easier to lose. Can you put a tag on a tag?

Apple TV is out of stock at Costco now. I just called them and they said that usually happens when a new model is coming. :)
local music and good retailer had all APple Tv models sitting with hand marked discounts on them. no catalogue sale.$20 - $30 off. get em out the door a bit cheaper and people wont be too unhappy when new model turns up. maybe.

Apple TV mini. (dongle/stick).

Team nicely with the can't find them anywhere Homepod minis.

ANd if we are more lucky, Apple TV Arcade (faster chip, more storage)...

The most likely hardware product for Apple to release without being part of a keynote is a new iteration of the Apple TV. Not only have leakers been saying it's been reading since Q2 but with the pandemic it makes sense to release an updated version with people stuck in their homes for the next few months at least. Plus it's been three years since the last Apple TV was released.

I just think if it was AirTags then they would want to talk about it during a keynote. I mean the move to a 16inch MBP was a big deal when it was released and I was surprised they didn't have it as part of a major presentation so Apple can do the surprising thing. Therefore it could be the next iteration of the iPad Pro although the reports of that future product suggest it's getting a new display technology sound probably won't be available until 2021.

The idea of a revised HomePod with a U1 chip is a decent suggestion but it seems odd to not announce it at the same time as the HomePod Mini.

Apple TV's are still readily in stock on the apple store and at best buy, just checked.

For what it's worth.

Why dilute the mini announcement with a HomePod update. The homepod update will be a press release for sure. U1 chip first and maybe a new processor in 2 years. It doesn’t use the full features of its current processor. Why spend extra money when you don’t need to?
Now that the minis are selling well the HomePod could use the u1 and not delute the mini.
Atmos on the HomePod would be wasted money if they were to discontinue it.

I'm thinking it's either higher-end spec M1 Mac minis to finally complete the Mac mini's transition to Apple Silicon (complete with the ports and RAM options we've been wanting) or its the rumored 2020 16" MacBook Pro with Intel still inside. Either way, I'm thinking VERY soft launch.

My bet is on an updated Apple TV and here’s why;

Apple announced we would be able to AirPlay videos that are recorded on iPhone 12 series in Dolby Vision format. There have been multiple tvOS releases since the event yet Apple TV 4K still does not play any videos in Dolby Vision neither via AirPlay nor through “Photos” app on the Apple TV.

My guess is that the Apple TV 4K does not support Dolby Vision profile 8.4 (iPhone 12 Dolby Vision format) hardware-wise so definitely Apple must be planning to release an updated unit to support that and fill the requirement. Add Fitness+ to that, there is your new release..

I'm thinking the same, as a creative... I feel like I need more power to run my apps... or at least more power at my fingertips. After Effects needs every last ounce of machine power... every last one. - Also... maybe it's something small and cool... or something integrating with Fitness +.
