Software fix?

I highly doubt it is a software fix. It will most likely be a design flaw.

But why not say there is a software fix? What's wrong with saying they are aware of the problem and intend to fix it with a software update? That's already what they told Walt Mossberg of the WSJ.

I will be extremely disappointed if there is not a fix in the works. Extremely.
A phone that is used for data as well as phone calls should be able to be held in the left hand.

I'm living with it, as we all are, but this is really unfortunate.

Because perhaps, at this point, they don't know if a software fix will resolve it and wouldn't want to make that statement prematurely.

I've been a lawyer for a LONG time, but I remember the very first day of my very first class when the Prof said, "You can ALWAYS sue...but the real question is can you win?"
So good luck with that!:D

mine said the same thing.

I hope this person has fun finding someone to take that case.

My buddy got his iPhone 4 yesterday and neither one of us could get the call to drop after trying the death grip for up to a minute at a time.

He was going to try again today from his office at work where the reception isn't quite as good, but we were both a little surprised that neither of us could replicate the problem after reading all the complaints here.

So the problem either:

A. Doesn't affect all phones (manufacturing variances, bad batches, etc)
B. Largely depends on the signal strength/frequency/channel, etc
C. Depends on differences in one's body chemistry (no clue if this could play a factor or not)
D. Some combination of the above

It may be about dropped calls to some, but I'm convinced that a lot of folks are simply heartbroken when they see the bars go away. Whether they truly have a problem or not is an aside to the fact the on-screen indicator says they have a problem.

My 3G data stops functioning immediately as I touch the bottom left part of the phone. This make it unusable to type or browse the web.

There's your hardware fix!

You guys think there will be a hardware fix? From what I can tell the phone would need to be re-done inside out to fix the signal issue. Am I right?

It's hammer-time! (iHammerTime!)

Thank God someone has the exact clue of what's going on.

Well I'm sure many won't believe me but I called AppleCare earlier today and talked to Ashley. She told me "some of the iPhones were made with a clear plastic band around the antennas. She said that the band is invisible and you wouldn't be able to visually tell if you had one with it or not. All of them were supposed to have it but somehow some did not receive it." She then told me she could set up an exchange at my local Apple store. Then I was put on hold and her supervisor picked up. She quickly denied what Ashley told me and said she was mis-informed. Did she know something that we don't? By the way... Ashley also told me that the white phone will not have this issue. I've always been an Apple fan but this has completely soured my feelings towards Apple . Did I mention my proximity sensor is overly sensitive too? Apple stands their best chance of recovering from this ONLY if they publicly acknowledge the defect and discuss how they will remedy it.

I am laughing my arse off at all these people crying because they cant operate their phones without touching that little black strip! Are there really that many uncoordinated motor morons out there?

Nature designed Human Beings with opposable thumbs and amazing powers of manipulation thanks to the miracle of the human hand.

I find that i can hold my iPhone in about 30 different ways, in either hand, with great ease and manage not to cover up that one little area that causes the signal issue. I MUST BE A CONTORTIONIST!!!!!

Geez people...get a grip! (pun intended).

Apple was stupid in putting the antennas on the bottom half of the phone. there is a reason that most phones put the antennas in the top half and on top of that do not allow the human hands to SHORT OUT the antenna. Apple has not figure out the top half trick in 3 years. Most people hold a phone the the bottom half if the half touch.

Apple clearly screwed over its engineers in this one. They choose to look pretty over design something that works correctly.

Then Apple at least choice wisely.... frustrating the lefties, whom there are much less to complain.

??? left handed people hold their phone in their right hand, right handed people hold it in their left. You dial with your dominate hand you don't hold with it.

I was just wondering something.......
Since the white iphone suffered delay and wont be released till mid July.......

Do you guys think a possible fix is being added??

I wouldnt mind a free bumper but rather have the issue fixed.....

That's ****ing **** Apple  .

I feel jealous for you Americans starting class action law suits already.... can us Brits join in?

You and me both my brother.... Keep me posted if there WILL be a chance to join for us in the UK. Might as well go Large yes?

:p

I am really unhappy with this and as you know we pay more for the iPhone than most people not to mention the rape that is the 24 months contract that costs you, your liver and spine.

24 months... that's just sick... in 24 months, you can have a 1 year old kid, a wife, being hit by lightening, or a car etc. 24 months... such a rip off.

And then the iPhone... thanks... life is great now... I can't even get out of this damn contract!

You have a problem in buying a case for your expensive phone ?

I don't see what the big issue is. Either stop complaining and hold the phone differently, buy a case, or return the phone and get something else.

If cellular data is on the right side of the phone why is someone holding on the phone left handed with their inside hand touching the left causing problems?

The gaps between cellular data and bluetooth/wifi/GPS are on the bottom left-hand side and very top of the phone. Since the majority of people are right-handed, they will hold the phone in their left hand (thus bridging one of the gaps) and navigate the phone with their right.

A simple "we're working on it, bear with us" type of statement would be a lot more respectful to their customers.

Admitting you've made a mistake, especially if you say you're going to fix it, is most likely the best thing to do, considering your massive customer base.

I highly doubt it is a software fix. It will most likely be a design flaw.

I dunno. Why can't I replicate this problem at home no matter how I hold the phone (and I have 5 bars of 3G) but I was able to replicate the problem on another side of town in my car (an area where I also had 5 bars of 3G)?

Others have reported the same. No problem at the office but problem at home. Or vice-versa. Why is this?

If it's a hardware-only problem, wouldn't the issue be reproducible no matter where you are?

Unlike many others here, I'm not going to hit the Panic button yet. Still holding out hope for a firmware fix.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Seriously? Discrimination?

Wow. Just wow.

Would it really matter if the attena was on the top or the bottom ? People are still going to complain, and when someone does find an issue all hell is going to break loose.

Truly lame. Just send out a bunch of free bumpers, Apple, and slow the PR bloodletting.

Not a big deal.

(No problems with my new iPhone though. Awesome device.)

So if a future-Droid is released requiring the same antidote (antidote, because there is no cure for it) to a design flaw, you'll just shut your mouth, accept the company's freebie bumper and not harp on them as a failure?

Thought not. Although these internal docs indicate "don't appease (you like that word, appease?! a loyal customer company treated like a dog)" "but offer a bumper at $30". You'd love a Nokia or a Motorla doing that?

You're a fanboy through and through, though. If there was an Apple Heaven, you'd sure get in.

Thank you apple, I bought one of these ipod touch's your palming of as a telephone, its still in the wrapper as it arrived this morning, and with what I have read about them you have no issues hahahahaa it will be returned tommorow. They are all knackered!.

I agree a silent fix will be rolled out on the next batch im not being locked into an 18 month contract on a phone that cannot phone.

You tell people your holding it wrong, its like buying a digital radio that can pick up no stations, whats the bloody point!

Enough!

It clearly is not effecting everybody and probably is a small percentage.

EVERY phone is affected. It depends on your location whether you will notice the signal degradation or not. If you haven't noticed it yet, give it time, you will.

(Unless you are immobile, but then you wouldn't need a mobile phone anyway...)

And they are not going to admit a flaw or let their CSR's admit a flaw exists either.

Because there is no flaw. The iPhone 4 antenna actually works better than most other non-external cell phone antennas... when held properly.

And all cell phone antennas behave similarly to a lesser or greater degree. Small cell phones show absorption loss if you wrap your hand around the portion containing the internal antenna. And older cell phones, such as the Motorola StarTAC flip phone, with their retractable metal aerials, could also detuned if you grabbed the external aerial tight.
