Doesn't even look that bad if you put it like this tbh. The problem is giving away upgradeability. A good monitor can last you a long time and the mac mini can be replaced.
Fair comment on that but there won't be many panel manufacturers doing 4.5K in 23.5" size. Would be interesting if LG offered a third party display in that size - would sure make for an interesting choice for Mac mini buyers.

Sorry to rain on the parade here.

These are throw-away systems (more so than the 13" M1 MacBook systems).

If you don't get the right amount of RAM or storage there is nothing you can upgrade. Repairs likewise will be almost as costly as getting a new system.

While I commend Apples efforts to make an ultra thin iMac. They have missed the boat as far as being Green! Selling systems which are not serviceable which in turn makes more eWaste as great as the candy is, is not a green model!

I swear the designer of the airpods max cover designed these iMacs.

Students obviously buy laptops and kids don't use desktop computers in this day and age. The truth is I have no clue who the target audience for these machines are.
these iMacs are obviously designed for dimwitted people who own half-assed non-sence start up business like lazy graphic design firms, mobile cup cakes shoppes and poodle dye and braiding salons like those retarded TV VISA® commercial featuring, who else?

I am sorely disappointed in this "Spring Loaded" event. My friend's distain for the M1 Macs is now fully justified... because now we have an iOS device that sports the same chip as the M1 Macs! Which means, there really IS NO DIFFERENCE. Yeah, I knew the M1 was an A-whatever-based chip, but at least it wasn't CALLED an A-whatever. It was an M, which stands for Mac... or at least, I THOUGHT it did. So, the only real difference is the OS... and, really... how much difference IS there?

And then we have the new iMac... as thin as an iPad (a HUGE one, agreed)... on a stand. Gee... and no more powerful/capable than a top-tier M1 Mac of your choosing (Macbook Air/Pro, or Mini).

Funny how now it seems that EVERYTHING that's announced is leaked so far in advance, we may as well have Apple not even TRY to keep it under wraps. So, was there even a "One More Thing"? I doubt I'm interested enough to see what it was.

The new M1 iMac looks too much like an iPad on a stand. So, I'll consider it that... a crippled iPad (no touch interface) on a stand... in multiple colors. Gee, wow... call me impressed. NOT.

I'm very happy with my M1 Mac Mini and separate monitor. I see absolutely NO reason to go with an iMac that offers nothing more than what I already have (16/512 configuration) and sticks me with a display that, if anything goes wrong, I have to take the entire thing in for repair.

I think Apple really dropped the ball on this event... big time. Their "spring" just broke.

Because an articulating arm makes it easy to throw the weight of the big panel around, remember there's some users who would have complained about it making t easy for them to break their delicate Mac screen which is encased in a lot of aluminium - not plastic.

Apple instead offer a VESA mount version of the iMac and you can mount it on the stronger articulating arm of your choice.
Strange that Apple was able to do it previously with the G4 and not have that issue... or Microsoft doing it recently with the Surface Studio, and also not having that issue.

And why would someone exactly need a 4.5K 23.5" display?

I got the mac mini - only reason why I will not get this is that i NEED 2 screens on my desk for work, witch sadly is in Windows, and since this is not working as an external screen... I will not get it... 3 screens will not fit on desk (M1+ 1 hdmi+1 thunderbolt display and both of them with a switch to switch between mac and pc (work and free time) -that just works..... also its REALLY bugging me that they say ahh this display rocks, but you can not use it as you want... those were the days when iMac was also an extra screen

Apple's new M1 iMacs are available in a range of color options that include Blue, Green, Pink, Silver, Yellow, Orange, and Purple. The new machines feature vibrant colored backs with lighter colors for the chin and accompanying stand.

Apple is limiting color availability by price point. The entry-level $1,299 M1 iMac is available in Blue, Green, Pink and Silver, while the higher-end $1,499 and $1,699 options are available in all seven colors.

So if you want an iMac in Yellow, Orange, or Purple, you will need to shell out at least $1,499. It's also worth noting that Apple has not introduced any black or space gray versions of the new iMac.

I love the new look with the exception of the front - missing apple logo. Seems quite naked w/o that. Also, we needed more ports not fewer. Sure there is loads of expandability with add on devices to covert to USB 1/2/3, firewire? But at an additional cost. As a former IT person, things plugged in on the floor is a no-no! We placed power bars ethernet jacks on top of desks so there is no need to crawl under desks (dust bunnies, filth, smacking heads on desk) so the power and ethernet designed to sit on the flood for me is not a good idea. Of course, IMO whatever that counts for in the greater scheme of things. By the sounds of it, it's going to smoke performance wise!

Wow, so ugly, white bezels always have been. And at this point they must be trolling with keeping the chin.

G4 iMac was at most a 20" display in plastic/polycarbonate and the base did indeed have a lot more weight in it - including hard drive and probably lashings of steel given my experience of the Cube and other contemporary Macs. The G4 will have had a surprisingly heavy base.

I expect the articulating arm was also problematic. Yes, a great design, but I am not surprised Apple don't want to recreate it given that the VESA standard allows the super-light iMac 24" to be mounted on a MUCH cheaper VESA articulating arm of your choice for maximum adjustment.

What monitor do you use? I'd have a 5k 27" if I could justify one - a cheaper 4.5K 23.5" display would be nice. Let me guess you'll be happy with a 1080p TN screen $149 Dell?

Again, Microsoft did it with the Studio and Studio 2 and has none of those issues. It actually worked really well. The arm didn't have to be the same as the one in the G4. I'm just saying the idea of "hardware in base attached to a screen (like the G4)" should have been their starting point for the new designs. The point was to put all of the hardware in the base, and just have a really nice screen SIMILAR to the XDR screen attached to it. That would have allowed them to solve all of the issues around bezels while still having all of the cool parts they added, like spatial audio and the crazy 'thinness' of the display.

Let's recap.

Power brick needed. (What!?!)

White bezels on all models.

A chin still.

No ethernet or USB-A ports on the base model.

8 GB across the board. User still can't replace manually.

An absolute joke.

And there’s still no vertical adjustment. Really not much of a redesign. Just a new paint job.

And don't you forget that your mouse will still have to be charged like this for the next 10 years or so:

I like them. I always thought the white plastic imacs preceding the aluminium ones looked cute. Too bad I don’t have a use for one of these now.

I like yellow, but not sure if I could live with looking at it all the time on a new iMac, besides I wan't the bigger one but its good to see where they are going.

Also I don't ming the chin, at 11.7mm thin they have to put the computer somewhere!
