has anyone done a study to see if having curved glass edges increase the fragility of the devices? When dropped, will they crack more easily requiring more replacements? When a case is put around the device will not the cool curved glass cease being noticeable?
I have a Ringke clear case on my Note 7 and it melds nicely with the edges. Case makers are really on the ball designing cases to protect the vulnerable corners without impeding the sides. The problem I see is that because the sides of cases are low to accommodate the edges, the display isn't protected by case sides (on the cases I got from Ringke on steep discount via Slickdeals). Samsung has made some smart covers that protect the phone all around. Those are really cool because they have displays on them.

I have a film screen protector on mine until I can get a chance to order a glass one from Samsung. The Note 7 did very well on front of display drop tests. It's the back and corners that seem most vulnerable to impact. And Gorilla Glass 5 may be more prone to scratching than earlier generations according to some preliminary anecdotes.

The timing of these supposed rumors about next year's iPhone, just before the launch of this year's iPhone, makes me suspect they are simply being fabricated in an attempt to disrupt next month's launch.

Can you explain how the curved edge screen helps you use your phone? I'm actually curious to know. My thought is that if you have to hold and tip your phone just so you can see some small icon / text that shows up on the edge of the screen (a mere few mm's tall), you could just as easily look at the main screen itself. And you also need to make sure your fingers are not in the way, covering up said tiny icons / text.
It looks the same when viewed straight on, there is next to no distortion...

Apple once again is here to PREFECT a curve phone technology!

Just like how Apple battery prefected the phone case and magic mouse bottom charger perfected wireless mouse charging technology.

Can't innovate MY ASS

"There's no benefit to that!" "It's stupid!" "It's just a gimmick!"

That sounds so much like how some dissed larger screened phones... before Apple came out with them. Or smaller tablets. Or pens. Or multitasking. Or NFC payments. Or anything that Apple didn't have at first.

Aren't you the same person who said this:

"I certainly don't understand how some people are so doom and gloom on change. Change is going to happen and keep happening, be it headphone connectors or file types, wifi connectivity."

Curved displays are no different. Go for it. Embrace the change :D

I'm all for change, but not change for the sake of change, which Samsung is well known for doing.

What is the real benefit of the curved edge - that's been my question and no one really has a good answer? A larger screened iPhone, I never said that wasn't appealing and the benefit is what it is - a bigger screen to see and do things on.

The curved edge screen provides such a small area that requires a person to purposefully have to move their fingers and hold the phone just so, just to see what is being shown on the edge. That's not helpful or beneficial. I just can't see any good reasons for doing this. Sitting at my desk, I have my iPhone and iPad on stands that face me, just like my rMBP screen. If I had a curved edge screen on my phone or tablet, I wouldn't even see them - not without turning the screen so it doesn't face me directly, which is stupid. Why would I want to do that?

I stand by my conviction that this implementation of a curved edge screen is pointless at best.

I'm all for an OLED display, but what's the deal with a curved display? Just like the curved TV's, it seems awfully gimmicky to me.

I agree on the curved screen. Awful.

That's the kind of crap gimmicks you'd expect from Samsung, appealing to those who put monster wings on their stickered-up Honda Civics, to go along with the big tail pipe and muffler that sounds like a bunch of angry bees trapped in a can when accelerating.

I'm ok with OLED (though Im perfect fine with the current display), but please no dingle ball-esque curved screen.

Fortunately is's just a RUMOR!

I don't understand this. Is the iPhone not a premium device already?

The literal meaning of premium is:
  1. of exceptional quality or greater value than others of its kind; superior.
In its youth, the iPhone was superior to the come alongs. Nowadays, other brands are offering comparable or superior features. Instead, Apple's premium reputation evokes the other definition:
  1. of higher price or cost.

To you and all the other "Apple copying" crew:

Apple patent 9,367,095, filed originally in 2011, curved glass, side images and all.

Sorry, but they're still the follower.

Patent filed in 2011 with expected inclusion from 2017.

The general user base don't really know or care about patents. They'll just see an iPhone that looks remarkably similar to the Samsung Edge phones.

Only reason to buy iPhone 7 would be for the upgraded cameras.. as usual... otherwise this one is an easy pass simply because no OLED.. had they kept the same form factor, tossed in the new camera, more ram and OLED this new device would have sold out probably faster then the last couple releases. BUT.. with no OLED till next year, I believe a lot of people who have 6, 6s, 6+, 6s+ will be on the fence or not even bother with "7". I'm one who wants OLED, it's a clear indicator that Samsung is smoking Apple in their screens.. I'd switch to the note 7 straight up but I'm heavily invested in Apple products so I'll stick with what has gotten me to where I'm at. But if next year's device is a massive let down, then I may have to just bite the bullet and look else where.

Makes sense to have a curved display since the iPhone's sides are curved otherwise it'll look like a cutting board with half curved body with flat display.

It's more than a year away. There will be two models and both will feature OLED display. I cannot believe the scepticism to be honest. We've all been with Apple I'm sure for the most part long enough to know their game. No features next year will be ground breaking, just simply perfected versions of all the smartphones currently available up until next years iPhone. Haven't been let down in a decade for the most part I don't believe it will start in 2017.

Bad idea to create yet another feature fragmentation... People don't want features tied to screen sizes.

Imagine the unimaginable people! That's Apple's motto..

Apple store staff should instead be chanting.. "Samsung, please come up with more ideas because we are out!"

Until Tim leaves and they have a visionary leader, Apple will be a second rate IT company. Thanks TIM for a horrible 5 years.. what happened to all those amazing products in the pipeline?

Like above I'm for the OLED display but it appears Apple are trying to price ppl out of the market for the high end phone. What happened to just having one device every other year apart from storage size ?? Apple are now focusing on revenue rather than innovate , we all laugh at Samsung but at least they bring something new to the table and are always a step ahead of the game but have a poor operating system ( which probably saves Apple) As much as I like my Apple products I just think they have got to the stage where they don't offer anything new - they keep banging on about the IOS but who actually uses some of the gimmicks they try to sell as something special ???

Could be an attempt to appeal to the ultra rich crowd. Cruise ships are doing something similar by offering a "boat within a boat" where the high rollers don't even need to socialize with the cheaper seats. They have private dinning, rooms, service, etc. Apple could try to tap that same market. Considering how quickly Lamborghini sells out of their custom, $1 million limited-run cars, the money is certainly there.

And yet ... some of the apple fanboys on this site will still somehow twist this into an "Samsung is copying Apple" angle.

"Samsung's Galaxy S7 makes a compelling case for Apple's rumored switch to OLED technology"

It also makes a compelling case for being better than an iPhone. Micro SD expandable, wireless charging, water resistant, still has old headphone jack etc. etc.

Hopefully by 8S or 9S Apple will be there. They are clearly seeing SAMSUNg ahead of them, no longer in the rearview mirror.

We need a bootcamp iOS edition, so we can run both systems.

That would actually be really neat. Many of us place out phones face down (for various reasons) and despite the addition of facetime cameras, the front camera never equals the quality of the rear camera, so, for good "power selfies" (friend made that up) you can either use your Watch as a viewfinder (if you have one), or guess that you and others are in the shot and background.

There could be many other neat applications for 2 screens (even if the 2nd was smaller) that I am sure app developers could be highly innovative with.

Smaller screens on the back have been done before. Particularly on the flip phones of yesterday. doesn't make it a bad idea just pointing out that the concept isn't new. I forget what phone I had in japan but it had a screen on both sides. It was a flip phone back when that was the prevalent style.
