I'm sick and tired of the giant iPhone getting all these features first (OIS, dual-camera), especially as something like an OLED display would fit fine inside a smaller device.

Have fun justifying this one guys…

Not.true my friend, my edge plus has no screen protector, it's a year old and is pristine, how? Keep a front jeans pocket spare all the time, no keys, no coins. Job done.
That's great, but just takes one little mistake and then you get that awful scratch that takes away all your excitement about your new awesome phone.

You really need to try holding the Note 7. Samsung has greatly improved the whole "curved" aspect of their phones since then. I went out to our local Verizon store over the weekend to check it out, and you would be surprised how great it feels in your hand.

More or less, those dismissing the curved screen as a "gimmick" are either in denial or just haven't used a phone with such a thing before, because I can assure you--it's a smart design decision on Samsung's part.

Can you explain how the curved edge screen helps you use your phone? I'm actually curious to know. My thought is that if you have to hold and tip your phone just so you can see some small icon / text that shows up on the edge of the screen (a mere few mm's tall), you could just as easily look at the main screen itself. And you also need to make sure your fingers are not in the way, covering up said tiny icons / text.

Agreed. The price of an iPhone has just gotten ridiculous in Canada, and I suppose, in most other countries outside the U.S.
Simply more money than I'm willing to part with for a smartphone.
Don't buy phone replacements as often. My spouse has had the same phone for 3.5 years. It continues to hold a full day charge and is running the latest iOS. Because of the latest iOS, the device and the apps are not as responsive as they previously were. Apple branded products have a very long life and if taken care of, don't need to be replaced because of device failure.
Saving money is not a crime, however, the interest rates that banks are paying don't seem to encourage saving.

I would have no problem if Apple keeps the 5s design, with the nice thin bezel. I don't like the way the iPhone looks starting with the 6. There's no need to make the phone thinner, then it becomes difficult to hold it in your hand. Many people end up buying a case to have a better grip on their phones.

That's a really great point. I deal with arthritis in my hands and without a case the new iPad's are too thin to hold comfortably, I can't imagine a thinner phone w/o a case. There's a sweet spot somewhere between 7-9mm thick.

I'm not a fan of the idea of adding yet another model to the iPhone line. I hope Apple sticks with the three model lineup it has now—where you can at least see a clear value for each model. When Apple starts adding $100+ to a model price and the only thing to show for it is a barely-usable strip of screen glass down the side... well, that would be a sad day for users.

I agree: keep the line up simple but strong in features and performance. Don't overcomplicate things. Giving too many options make things difficult to the user, the developer and in the long run, even to the manufacturer.

People think Apple are copying Samsung? That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Apple have known what they were doing years ago!! A bit like how they already know what they're doing in the next few years.

People really think it takes 12 months to plan, research and manufacture a product? Hm.

I'm just not understanding what the benefit is for a curved edge screen? ...

... It's a handheld device, why would anyone think having to turn it just so, so they can see some small icon on the edge, when they could more easily just look at the dang screen? It's a gimmick and nothing more.

"There's no benefit to that!" "It's stupid!" "It's just a gimmick!"

That sounds so much like how some dissed larger screened phones... before Apple came out with them. Or smaller tablets. Or pens. Or multitasking. Or NFC payments. Or anything that Apple didn't have at first.

Aren't you the same person who said this:

"I certainly don't understand how some people are so doom and gloom on change. Change is going to happen and keep happening, be it headphone connectors or file types, wifi connectivity."

Curved displays are no different. Go for it. Embrace the change :D

I don't have arthritis at this time, but still: using the phone or iPad without a case could sometimes be like holding a wet bar of soap in your hands.

Meanwhile, Samsung is rumored to expand their edge screen technology to even more of their lineup, including the standard size S8 next year.

So not only is Apple late to the party (which is fine), but they may only limit it to their most expensive and highest end model. Common and understandable thing for Apple to do, but a bit suckier for the consumer.

Indeed, it's refined on the Note 7 and feels very nice to hold and use and I find now I can look at the display comfortably with my glasses. On my iPad and iPhones I take my glasses off and hold the display up close to my middle aged nearsighted and far-sighted eyes. If Samsung makes a similar display for iPhone it's going to be sweet. If they incorporate Apple Pencil functionality in, too...bonus. I would love to see that. It would bring something new to the table for many people looking for a bit more and who, like me, were lured to Samsung.

I do love my SE and hope Apple continues to offer upgrades to the 4" form factor in the future. Or finds a way to shrink the bezels more for their flagship smaller model...whatever they end up calling it.

I would at least wait and see what the iPhone 7s have to offer before I get too upset about prognostications on the anniversary iPhone. I think the new cameras are going to be really competitive.

They don't need to curve. they just need to get rid of the bezel. Put the touchid sensor under the screen and get rid of the home button. Use up all the available real estate before going to the edge gimmick. At least in my book that would be way better.

Agreed, look at these two 5.5" phones..

Just when you thought Apple might take the lead and be a bit innovative and launch an OLED 4.7" phone.... No the rumours claim they are just going to basically rip off the Galaxy Edge in everything but OS

No doubt the new 'premium' phone, (yeah right well when it matches Vertu's prices I'll call it premium) will have the best camera and most ram etc etc.
Oh and it'll cost a grand starting price with 32GB storage...

All they need to do is stop this obsessive thinner and thinner design, give a little more battery life, an OLED screen and half decent camera to the 4.7" device and ditch the home button..

At this rate next year we'll get the iPhone 6SSE!!

To you and all the other "Apple copying" crew: Apple patent 9,367,095, filed originally in 2011, curved glass, side images and all.

"Gimmick or not, people really seem to like Samsung's Galaxy "Edge" smartphones. And now Apple seems to be interested in them, too."

"Apple has just been granted a new patent for "electronic devices with sidewall displays." Patent US009411451, which was filed on April 21, 2015 and made public on Aug. 9, suggests future iPhones could come with curved screens that work similarly to Samsung's flagship phones."

Can't wait until 2017. No, really, I don't want to wait and settle with a middling 2016 release, and neither should anyone, just because Apple "forgot" how to design new products or redesign existing product lines. If the Note 7 wasn't so woefully underpowered as I read on several blogs, I would have snapped it in a jiffy.
