Apple could add an OLED ‌iPad‌ to its lineup in 2023 or 2024, and the ‌iPad Pro‌ could perhaps be the first ‌iPad‌ to adopt an OLED display.

This does not make much sense, IMO, considering the amount of effort Apple put into upselling mini-LED for their iPad Pro line. Also, iPad Pro is not such a big seller, with most iPads being sold are the entry level LCD cheap ones, followed by Air. Let’s see.

Out of all the new expected iPad Pro features mentioned, the most exciting seems to be Apple advancing their mini-LED screen tech. The rest is ok. As it was mentioned multiple times around here, iPad hardware is great as it is, it’s iPadOS that needs more attention now.

I find your middle para hard to believe .... the only reason anyone would move from an 11 pro to a mini is portability. In every other aspect, whether the OS takes advantage of M1 (or even A12Z) or not, the 11 pro is better.

Having experienced the terrible Mini 6 screen, tiny icons etc, I'd rather own an older 11" pro than the new mini.

It's what I have found in my research. People are leaving the iPad Pro for the iPad Mini. Endless You Tube videos on this. And most seem underwhelmed by the iPad Pro having so much power totally under-utilised so they are buying the smaller more portable iPad. These people seem to have computers as well though so the iPads aren't the main devices for them.

The 11” should be getting mini LED. Would love to see gold/rose gold colour for the Pro iPads. Wireless charging will be useful if the charging speed is higher. Wonder what improvements a new Apple Pencil can bring.

Was really disappointed that the 11" didn't get mini-LED last year. But even with it I'm not sure I would have upgraded from my 2018. Even this time with the rumored updates this time I probably wouldn't upgrade if my 2018 didn't have a cracked screen (still works, just looks bad in daylight). As others have mentioned, it is really he SW that has been lagging as the HW even as is is pretty darn good.

I think if Logic Pro and Final Cut won't make it to WWDC at this point, I think it is safe to say they will never port these apps.

i heard Apple are going to Skip M2 and go for M3 which could possibly be one of the most powerful chips on the planet…the new MacBook AirM3 is set to be 36% faster than the M1.

No probably fall 2022.

nothing here to get me excited though. The real potential progress is in the software

Agreed 110%.

I'm using an IPP from 2018 and see no need to update it right now. I MAY upgrade it in late 2023 as 5 years is about the longest I like to keep anything computer related.

The software is KILLING the IPP. From what I read, this seems to be the consensus of people here on MR.

Give me wifi 6E and I’m sold. Otherwise no go again
I don’t understand asinine statements like this. You won’t get it because it doesn’t talk to 6 ghz Wi-Fi? Which offers literally zero benefits over regular Wi-Fi 6 outside of another channel, most importantly being that the speeds are identical on 5 and 6 ghz - but it does have worse range. I think people are under some impression that 6E is something special… it isn’t.

My guess is that these people had no intention of ever getting an ipad in the first place. Even when the ipad does get wifi 6, they will just find something else to nitpick and justify why they aren’t getting one, like it’s all Apple’s fault for not meeting their inane expectations.

It’s all about software revisions at this point. In terms of hardware, the iPad is at a stagnant point. And I don’t say that in a negative context, there’s only so much Apple can add/alter on a year-to-year basis. I’d say 90% of the iPad is the OS experience to the user.

I completely disagree. In fact, I've been waiting for the next hardware refresh for years - and why I won't upgrade until they do. Facts are, Pro users mainly use the Pro models for workflows and media consumption, and all of those experiences are best done on larger screens ... so make a bigger model already!!!!

My wish list:
- Larger screen AND different aspect ratio. Doesn't have to run exactly wide, but the current ratio is as tired as it gets.
- NO MORE BEZELS. Again, another "innovation" that should have taken place on the Pro model years ago. And it's really a simple tweak, you just add a few dead pixels around the edge so there's no false inputs when holding and viola - a true edge-to-edge viewing experience.
- With this larger size now comes more room for larger batteries and more componate upgrades.

All I want in a new iPad Pro (hardware):
- Macbook style magsafe
- Camera positioned in landscape
- Ability for iPad keyboard to have a second thunderbolt port (More bandwidth through the smart connector)

The thing I want that we'll never get:
- Surface like kickstand so that you can easily prop it up next to your MacBook without making it 2x as thick and heavy with the keyboard.

Software things:
- Hand gesture for accessing spotlight within an app
- Actual external display support

For me just 3 things are necessary:
1. True external monitor support
2. Resizable windows
3. macOS apps compatibility
And that’s something even the base iPad with 3GB of RAM and A13 could handle. The trick is they now have iPads with over 5 times the RAM available in the iPad Pros with 16GB of RAM, and yet, it does nothing else different than a base $329 iPad other than hold apps open longer, which is nice. But seems so wasteful from a hardware perspective.

My most wanted hardware upgrade for the iPad is for it to be thinner and lighter, so the most interesting hardware rumour in the list was moving to titanium.

Meh....Without a real OS with a real file system it is basically just a very expensive multimedia player and social networking platform with more disgusting bugs than the decaying carcass of an elephant.

Many people are wishing for the camera and FaceID to move to the long edge. that would get it out of the way. Otherwise, you might just need to shift your hand a little bit.

I would not want to get rid of Face ID. The Touch ID on the iPad Air is more clumsy. Face Id on the iPad is smooth and fast and has a wide field of view.
Probably you have some problems with understanding what I wrote :) I have no wish to change the sensor in favor of Touch ID. Just I think it should be placed somewhere else, not even in the long edge. Maybe it should be placed in a corner where it will be always visible? I love Apple toys and the design, but devices must be convenient and practical too. It is not a painting of the Mona Lisa just for admiring. People are working on them too.

They need to make them less prone to glass breaking. I understand the wireless charging, one less port to break. But in reality they just want to remove all ports from portables. Which is great for them, but they won't be giving up all the revenue from fixing devices either. So maybe by the time they introduce port-less iPads, they will be even easier to break. Maybe they will put glass on the sides or the back to make up for the lost revenue in replacing buttons and ports.

About macOS on iPad
There are lengthy threads on the topic, especially from last year's WWDC. In summary, macOS is not coming to iPadOS, neither as dual boot nor as a replacement of iPadOS.

Now, what we can hope for are more pro apps. I'd also love to see a Terminal, a true Finder instead of Files app, being able to format an external SSD, Logic, FCP, so on and so forth. If it's not coming at this year's WWDC despite all the comments throughout the (recent) years, then I'd simply give up on the idea of buying an iPad Pro.

About Pencil
Two patents caught my attention: sampling irl colours and haptic feedback. These definitely would be insane upgrades imho.

OK bring the M2 if you want. If price doesn't change, I'll take it. Far more important is. Mini LED on the 11" model. As regards the front camera position, I'm not keen on seeing it relocated. After all, isn't portrait orientation the best orientation to view... portraits, aka people?

The 11“ has ProMotion. Are you referring to Pro XDR (Mini LED display like on the 12.9” model)?

Why is it always titainium and never LIQUID METAL?

I had such high hopes for liquid metal when Apple bought the company (right? Or Ami wrong?) and nothing ever came of it.
