If people would just mind their business it wouldnt be a big issue. If someone wants to vote negative, how does that hurt you? Mind your business, read the article, and move on. Making a big deal of it and asking why people voted negative is asinine, to say the least.

What does it bother you that I'm bothered, why don't you practice what you preach, read my comment and then move on. :)

Any personal Steve sightings? Apparently he IS there:

Grab that stainless steel thing and push / pull ! It works better.

I'm in Brooklyn now, but heading over to the City in about 30 mins.
Gonna try to get oneof those Macbooks!!!!!

Where is the actual store? I must have missed something...all I see is a cube.

Looks to me like the Steve is inspecting some of the bolts he made the builders replace. He is likely near sighted which is why he has his glasses off in that shot (so he can see things up close better).

Come on let's be serious, the building is only 32 feet tall. Hardly tall enough for a bird to even consider landing on in NYC. And have you ever been to NYC? Ever noticed that almost all the buildings are covered in glass and/or reflective materials. No bird is going to die from flying into a 32 foot cube down on street level.

First, I live in the NYC area and I"m in the city often enough (most recently at the Javitz Center for the auto show a month ago).

Second, your assertions couldn't be more wrong. I'm sure some quick research with the Audobon society would clear this up.

I live with there birds (Cockatiels) who are free to fly when I am home. Birds do not understand the concept of glass nor of reflections (how can they tell a tree from a reflection of a tree on a glass building?). I have every glass pane in my house covered with sheer drapes so they understand something is there. I have one that would always make a break for a particular part of my picture window when she got spooked. I put bubble wrap (until she learned) and darker curtains there to stop her from breaking her neck slamming into the glass at full speed.

Birds don't always fly hundreds of feet in the air. As I mentioned in my previous post, I remember in particular reading about the WTC pre-911 and how they had recently installed nets around the lower 20 floors or so because migrating birds coming in from the bay would slam into the glass and lay injured or dead at the base. I also know for a fact that there are Audobon society volunteers who patrol the city's skyscrapers in the morning finding injured and dead birds (called "Project Safe Flight") and trying to pressure skyscraper owners to help out the birds.

Another bird fact you must not be familiar with is that they love to scrounge on the ground for food, they don't always stay in the air or in trees. Of course they're most vulnerable on the ground and if spooked they will take off like lightning. Now, put a giant glass cube in their way and bad things will happen.

Finally, many migrating birds fly at night, which makes clear glass an even bigger danger.

The New York City chapter of the Audubon society has a site here:
http://www.nycaudubon.org/home/

They keep a detailed database of birds found (you have to create an account), and the results are sobering. So far just this month, 11 birds have been killed slamming into the glass of the Javitz center (which is bigger than the Apple cube but far from a skyscraper).

Also on the subject of Apple's 24/7 store, I understand the glass will be lit and the giant logo as well.

Audubon society said:
Project Safe Flight’s Lights Out New York promotes education and outreach by encouraging owners of tall buildings to turn off lights during migration season to help save night-migrating birds while reducing energy costs. Lights can distract birds from their migration path and cause them to collide with buildings during bad weather. Turning off the lights and drawing the blinds can help save thousands of birds from over 100 different species every year.

Steve should pony up and replace the glass of the cube with this:

Audubon Society said:
Project Safe Flight convened the first Bird-Safe Glass Working Group, a multi-city task force charged with the goal of creating the first ever glass that can be seen by birds. Using such glass on building exteriors could dramatically reduce the number of collisions, which is estimate at 100 million a year in North America alone. The first meeting of the working group, hosted at the NYC Audubon offices in Manhattan, included notable researchers such as Daniel Klem and partnersfrom similar bird-collision prevention programs in Toronto and Chicago.

I think I'm going to shoot an email over to the Audubon society and let them know about Apple's cube.

Haven't read the whole thread  sorry. Are there any MR members there with portables/cameras? I'd guess there's just the odd Airport network around in the area.
