Phil Schiller was there?! Any word if he's going to be there for the grand opening tomorrow evening? Steve Jobs? Please say he'll be there.

Seems like lots of money spent on something that does very little. Sure I like it but I would have liked to see more creative use of the space. Coulen't they thing of something else it could do besides be pretty...
It's advertising. A pretty noticeable billboard! And unlike some, this one can let you try stuff hands-on.

As far as the "Live Performance" I will take a stab at the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Or U2 with a Red charity iPod?

He was—I just talked to him briefly. He was cornered by a dude FOREVER. But that guy also left with a black macbook in tow! ;-)

Do you know if anyone from Apple will be there tomorrow? Anyone worth looking for... like Steve or Phil? You're my insider now. ;)

I don't see any pics of the NY store on that link, only a (text) press release. What am I missing?

Apparently they were removed. You can find pictures on other sites though, such as AppleInsider.

If anybody is going to the store, please mention concerns over birds breaking their necks slamming into the glass to a store manager or Apple official. I'm sure Apple is more eco-friendly than this and it's just an oversight. I'd hate to see the little critters losing their lives.

I hate to say this... but I honestly think we are going to see a new product tomorrow. This is obviously more then just a new store opening somewhere.
That would be nice...but I highly doubt it...do you see any emplty spaces awaiting the position of a new product in the in store pics?

Are all from the thousands of birds that will surely break their beaks on this giant glass cube of death. Seriously, are they going to hire people to pick up all the carcasses throughout the day?

Come on let's be serious, the building is only 32 feet tall. Hardly tall enough for a bird to even consider landing on in NYC. And have you ever been to NYC? Ever noticed that almost all the buildings are covered in glass and/or reflective materials. No bird is going to die from flying into a 32 foot cube down on street level.

No, they aren't. But everyone makes mistakes and miscalculations.

I am reminded of the Hancock building by the great I.M. Pei, who also designed the Louvre Pyramid to which this Apple cube has been compared.

Everything has a structural limit, I am just curious as to what the limit is here.
YES..they are. All structures are designed for these loads...however the factor of safety applied to the design may not be high enough and the amount of money the owner is willing to pay for this added safety may be another story. But all structures are designed for loads such as these.

Probably just Phil. All the PR peeps are in town for next week's demos. Ron Johnson was there today—he did the presentation to us this morning.

People in glass houses... :D

Sorry if I missed this in the thread somewhere, but is this store even handicapped accessible? I'm not handicapped, but I didn't see an elevator in the entrance. Unless there's some other entrance that is handicap accessible.

Yep, there's a custom-designed cylindrical glass elevator right in the center (goes down through the center of the spiral staircase). Hard to see, but it's there.

EDIT: Sorry, neps, your post didn't show up when I had the page loaded before and I can't delete this one, oh well.

Great pics, neps, best I have seen anywhere so far on the web. Beautiful building, although it seems to be almost invisible from across the street (clear and gets dwarfed by the buildings around it). I can see walking through there and not even noticing it unless you know it's there.

Things like this really make me feel like Apple is transcending just being a successful computer company, when you start building iconic buildings you know you've arrived into the international zeitgeist. Apple is near the tipping point where momentum could carry them far away from being just another computer company, or even just another consumer electronics company. As Apple fans, we already know they're different (and usually "better"), but it seems the rest of the world is starting to take notice as well.

Has anyone tried to claim SQUATTERS RIGHTS within the store yet.

Anyone tried to move in PERMANENTLY

Doubtful. The Peppers one member likes to perform shirtless or just in his underoos. This sets a bad precedent on the grand opening for a store that surely has some sort of dress policy.

My guess is for Sarah McLachlan, Madonna, John Mayer, or Alicia Keyes, because I think all of them have been on stage with Steve.

Out of that list, Madonna is least likely, because she probably requires 10,000 square feet just for her production whatever. Sarah McLachlan isn't too materialistic and I'd have a hard time seeing her celebrate a store. John Mayer would do it a heartbeat because God knows he could use the publicity. Alicia Keyes might fit the sweet spot of not being desperate to appear and not being to difficult to host.

Couldn't agree more!

I found this on MSNBC:

"The stores have been super successful and a real contributor to Apple's success," Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in a phone interview a day before heading to the New York opening. "It's bringing a whole new generation of customers to Apple and the Mac, and that's really important to us."

If this article is as accurate as I am hoping, Steve Jobs may just make an appearance. :D

One picture is all I am asking!

Yeah, it's not like NYC has no glass structures besides this one.
