Phil Schiller was there?!
Any word if he's going to be there for the grand opening tomorrow evening? Steve Jobs? Please say he'll be there.
It's advertising. A pretty noticeable billboard! And unlike some, this one can let you try stuff hands-on.aswitcher said:Seems like lots of money spent on something that does very little. Sure I like it but I would have liked to see more creative use of the space. Coulen't they thing of something else it could do besides be pretty...
Or U2 with a Red charity iPod?freeny said:As far as the "Live Performance" I will take a stab at the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I don't see any pics of the NY store on that link, only a (text) press release. What am I missing?pmcaleer said:Hi-res TIFFs of the interior and the cube are up on Apple's retail site for download.

That would be nice...but I highly doubt it...do you see any emplty spaces awaiting the position of a new product in the in store pics?mtrctyjoe said:I hate to say this... but I honestly think we are going to see a new product tomorrow. This is obviously more then just a new store opening somewhere.
Bakafish said:Are all from the thousands of birds that will surely break their beaks on this giant glass cube of death. Seriously, are they going to hire people to pick up all the carcasses throughout the day?
janstett said:If anybody is going to the store, please mention concerns over birds breaking their necks slamming into the glass to a store manager or Apple official. I'm sure Apple is more eco-friendly than this and it's just an oversight. I'd hate to see the little critters losing their lives.
I would tell you but the mods would just delete my post. Just like they deleted the post you quoted me on.BRLawyer said:Freeny, you still don't tell me who that girl in your avatar is...she is cute..!![]()
YES..they are. All structures are designed for these loads...however the factor of safety applied to the design may not be high enough and the amount of money the owner is willing to pay for this added safety may be another story. But all structures are designed for loads such as these.anonymous161 said:No, they aren't. But everyone makes mistakes and miscalculations.
I am reminded of the Hancock building by the great I.M. Pei, who also designed the Louvre Pyramid to which this Apple cube has been compared.
Everything has a structural limit, I am just curious as to what the limit is here.

Yep, there's a custom-designed cylindrical glass elevator right in the center (goes down through the center of the spiral staircase). Hard to see, but it's there._Matt said:Sorry if I missed this in the thread somewhere, but is this store even handicapped accessible? I'm not handicapped, but I didn't see an elevator in the entrance. Unless there's some other entrance that is handicap accessible.
There's one in Portland and two right outside of it in Tigard. Sorrry if someone else already replied, I'm only on page one of the forum so far.-sam10685 said:they should build one here in portland oregon.
Doubtful. The Peppers one member likes to perform shirtless or just in his underoos. This sets a bad precedent on the grand opening for a store that surely has some sort of dress policy.freeny said:As far as the "Live Performance" I will take a stab at the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Couldn't agree more!HiRez said:Great pics, neps, best I have seen anywhere so far on the web. Beautiful building, although it seems to be almost invisible from across the street (clear and gets dwarfed by the buildings around it). I can see walking through there and not even noticing it unless you know it's there.
Things like this really make me feel like Apple is transcending just being a successful computer company, when you start building iconic buildings you know you've arrived into the international zeitgeist. Apple is near the tipping point where momentum could carry them far away from being just another computer company, or even just another consumer electronics company. As Apple fans, we already know they're different (and usually "better"), but it seems the rest of the world is starting to take notice as well.
