But this is my exact point. Yes going from 5.8 to 6.5 is a big reason to upgrade. But I currently have the X and wouldn’t consider the 6.5, so for people like me, why would you wanna upgrade from the old 5.8 to the new 5.8? I don’t have a concrete answer, and I’m curious to see if Apple does.
Most likely the 5.8" iPhone X (2nd gen) or 6.1" iPhone 9 will be meant for owners of the non-Plus 8, 7, 6s, while the 6.5" iPhone X Plus will be meant for owners of the X, 8 Plus, 7 Plus, 6s Plus wanting a larger screen.

If you already bought a 5.8" iPhone X (1st gen) at the inflated early adopter price and aren't interested in the larger screen, why would you even consider upgrading?

How do we know that wasn’t intentional?

Because Apple sells 3-5 million units of iPhone X per month.

It would be completely stupid to intentionally delay the iPhone X launch. The iPhone X selling cycle for 2017-2018 is now 10 months instead of 12.

It's quite comical how every year these analysts report the same thing and every year we fall for it. I mean, sure, there could be a delay or production issues or whatever, but has it ever been true in the past?

Do you have a short memory? The product was called iPhone X.

I call BS on the headline. There cannot be a delay on something that has not yet begun and will not even be announced for another few months anyway.
Bruh, do you think these new phones materialize by the hundreds of thousands on day 1? They start production months in advance to streamline and catch any major flaws in the manufacturing/assembly process. A delay now usually points at either a supply or tooling issue.

Everyone is making fun of the delay headline, and yet last year the iPhone X was delayed.

I think two thing are being mixed. One was the delay rumor, the second was the rumor about the massive shortage that was supposed to take half a year to overcome. The first proved true, the second not so much. Also, rumors of delays really are here every year, and only proved true last year. But, yeah, a delay/postponing is definitely possible.

Everytime I read a review in which an author complains that iPhone "x" is not good enough for him to upgrade to from his iPhone "x-1" I feel my pulse increase. You are not the primary customer for that phone. And hey, if you're on the upgrade plan - nice, a free faster phone that lasts longer, maybe in a new color too. Imagine buying a new car every two or so years when they do a refresh. Sure, for most, the lifespan of phones is shorter, but that is pretty much where we are in the smartphone market right now.

When customers placed their order for iPhone 6, 6s, and 7, many of them had their ship dates slip by weeks or months.

The only recent product that didn't face delays was iPhone 8.

Is this why the iPhone 8 was sold months before iPhone X?
Take into consideration, Apple didn't know how the market would react to a $1,000 phone. Now, that its selling well, they know consumers are willing to spend $1,000+ on a phone.

Yes, but shortage X delayed launch

And if I understand correctly, the ship dates usually ended up being much sooner then quoted?

I don't see the point of having 3 devices in 0.7 inch of difference... and also I don't see who will buy the device instead of the other two. I would rather put a device in the low 5 inches range (like an X-ish iPhone 8 4.7)

I’m betting that the main problem with these new phones will be cost. The LCD might be slightly cheaper than the iPhone X but not by much and the other two Oled models are gonna kill us all.

The competition is getting to $600 with practically no compromises and Apple chose this weird route with Face ID and force touch that is unnecessarily pushing up the costs. If the LCD dumps force touch, dumped Face ID for a rear finger and used a plastic/composite back with a tiny camera notch it might actually outsell the current iPhone X design!

What about SE 2? The X is too big for me. (That's what she said...)

And what about fingerprint under screen? Will iphone have it or are they going all in on faceid?

March 2019 at the earliest.

Looks like Apple is all in with Face ID, even iPads are rumoured rumoured to have feature them with an update this year.

The iPhone "XS" is to cost less according to rumors.

It’s not a delay when they’ve been planning for months to release the cheaper LCD model in October.

The only thing new here is that the late October/early November plan has been moved up by 2 weeks into mid October.

There is no SE 2, and there is no “fingerprint under the screen“. There never was.

No idea why anyone would even still be talking about that. Simply irrelevant.

Apple was clearly smarter this year and devoted more resources to ensuring that the more expensive OLED models would be ready first.

They could have prioritized the LCD model, but they wisely didn’t. Now the OLED models will launch first and eat up the impatient early adopter sales, like the iPhone 8 did last fall.

Big 4th quarter for Apple this year. Real big.

It's actually the opposite of everything you say here. iOS 12 improves performance on older devices as far back as the iPhone 5s. You also obviously have a choice to move to an Android manufacturer, but good luck getting OS support better than that.
Wow, you literally have no sense of humor. It’s called sarcasm. It’s found everywhere here on MacRumors.
