I was aware of the fast charge capability of the 96W power supply when I placed my order last night. I opted out from ordering the 96W when I noticed that 2 weeks had been added to the delivery date. I don't really need fast charging.
I will be trading in my M1 MBP, but I'm hoping to keep its 61W power supply to use in my bedroom. It should be enough to power and charge the M1 Pro 14", though at a slower rate.

If I have the 16inch but don’t want to ‘fast charge’ how can I limit the wattage so it just charges normally? In the interest of protecting battery health.

I placed my order this morning. For $20 I upgraded. I was annoyed about it, but it's not that much and if I need fast charging, it's there. However, after reading these comments I am doubting myself. I may cancel out of principal and reorder with just the standard charger.

Bean Counters will always be bean counters.

Tim Cook will never be a visionary, no matter how hard he tries. And if he drives visionaries from Apple, that will be his undoing.
Apple is bigger than Cook and always has been, but Apple wasn't really bigger than Jobs.

So smaller, lighter and cheaper and using less material and less operating losses for travel versus an upgrade most will probably never use. Don’t understand those making this an issue

Another reason not to buy the cheapest 14" configuration, thanks.
Seriously? That is quite a sweet spot. I’m debating returning my m1 MBP, for precisely the cheapest model. Better screen 16 GB, 512 storage, crazy faster processor, an extra tb port, MagSafe (I do miss that). But I have to give up my touchbar (I do love that too). So do I need a better screen, an extra 8 go, and all that speed? No, actually I dont

Thanks for the reply. This is why I am rethinking my order. I appreciate the feedback.

Lol, now what about paying extra for AppleCare +?

I wonder if it was a supply chain issue? I got the 10-core CPU not knowing, but I always have two chargers, one at home and one at work. I will wait until the Chinese assimilate the technology and buy one on Amazon for half the price. I do like the fast charging, I hate having to be connected to power.

Save money AND extend battery health with a perfectly adequate charge time? Okay then.

Literally can’t think of a single time I’ve been in a hurry to charge my laptop.

WTF. new computer and you need to BUY a power supply to charge it properly. what would Steve say?
It charges perfectly fine with the charger and cable in the box. If you want to quick charge the base model, then you have to upgrade to the higher end charger for 20 bucks.

Doesn't fast charging reduce battery life over time? I remember reading something about that for phones and how it puts a lot more stress on the battery

I am pretty sure it came with the 16-inch MacBook Pro before the 2019 "redesign."

In other words:
  • pre-2019, 16-inch MacBook Pro: 87W charger
  • 2019-21, 16-inch MacBook Pro: 96W charger

Oh, and I happen to have one around here. I was just suspicious because of the oddly specific wattage. It's not 85 watts, or 90 watts, it's 87 watts.

Thanks...

EDIT: Apparently Apple doesn't even sell it separately. Strange, but maybe they want people needing an adapter to buy the 140 watt one. (It's not 100 watts, or 105 watts, but 140 watts...) :D:cool:

It’s pretty rare for me that I would ever need the fast charge capability. It is cool, but would be an unnecessary purchase for me.
I would like to have smaller size charger. It makes it a little more portable. What is it with 140W charger? It will be nice to get just the USB-C to MagSafe cables. I can use my bricks without the USB C. It would be lovely to see iPads start coming with MagSafe.
