"Oh man...I got a lame Echo Dot for Christmas" Don't ya think they are targeting teens? Is Amazon associating their smart devices with any celebrity or teenager trendsetting icon? This is about getting teenagers embracing it as their own thing and marketing. They want adults to be like WTF is this. "You don't get it mawm"

What you all don’t understand is that certain ethnic groups spend a disproportionate amount of their income on clothes and phones. Look at nike commercials. All that matters to Apple is the bottom line. If they had a Christmas song by some artist singing like Waylon Jennings it would probably result in protests.

I am not someone who tends to quickly see a lot of racism everywhere, but the comments in this thread about this artist's appearance and how her music is "not music" immediately stood out to me. People are trying to explain these comments away as being about "personal preference" or whatever, but the veil is awfully thin.

I remember people hollering about the same complaint with just about every genre when it has advanced. your comment is like an explicit content label lol. Try to breathe deep and hear whats being said at normal volume. Curious if people judge music based on the artist or how the artist is dressed or the style of music before they actually listen to it?

Heck that same complaint is spoke by so many students when they first read Shakespeare. notice the trend? ;)
Just get off my lawn!

all very well, but there’s no stock to buy the product they’re advertising... so what’s the point.

Are you saying that not liking someone's music makes one racist?

Seeing the comments in this thread gives me hope that the large majority of people here (and by extension elsewhere) are waking up to the nonsense these companies are pushing in order to pander to certain groups and push nonsensical content or “art” in order to ultimately sell products while claiming “virtue”

It’s a terrible ad to most who see it and I think even Tupac Shakur is spinning in his grave to what the genre he pioneered has become and to whom it has been taken over by.

How the **** can ya'll turn this into a race thing is beyond me. I am sure you don't wanna say she looks like the average black woman. With all that wolf crying you only make people immune to your labelings, and that can lead to people getting fatigued and not caring about actual racists either. Just look around what's happening in the world, people like you are not fighting but inadvertedly helping it. Save your energies for the real ones, stop living in your personal Don Quixote stories.

Yeah, I didn't really get a holiday vibe from this ad, so I think it missed the mark in that way. I think of the holidays as primarily about connection to friends and family, and she was alone (except her mini me) the whole time. Which maybe is supposed to be a 2020 message or something? I dunno. But it didn't feel like a holiday ad to me. If it was just an ad for the HomePod mini at some other time of year then it would be fine (not my genre of music, but you can't please everyone).

But wow, these comments.

I think you got it. Right under your nose, so to speak.

With the holidays upon us, and with the pandemic, many people are alone and not with family and friends due to covid concerns. Many have suffered having a friend or relative pass away. Pandemic overload and depression (and anxiety) are real and many are suffering. As a result we're left to our own devices (not an intentional pun) and imagination to get through the holidays. I could go on, but I'll stop there.

Beautiful person, beautiful cinematography, beautiful video/ad. Well done Apple!

And how you can not see it is beyond me. As I said before, I'm actually quite far from someone who sees racism everywhere, but this isn't really a close call - people are using words like "disgusting" to describe the performer. What's your threshold - someone has to actually use the n-word? Please stop for a second and try to imagine these same comments about this commercial if it had a white woman performing. Absolutely would not happen.

I knew it was a mistake to engage in this thread, and now I'm going to bow out because this is just getting depressing.

Come on man, when did disgusting became a racist word? Calling out this performer is not an attack one very black women in any kind, since she's very far from the mean.

My threshold is attacking someone for being what he/she is. Or defending her/him for that same reason.

Please stop for a second and try to imagine these same comments about this commercial if it had a white woman performing.
I did as you asked. Some of the people crying racism here would be crying racism here because Apple hadn't used a PoC.

That's what every generation says about their kids' music. When you say it yourself you have gotten old.
Except I recall parents and kids generally liking & listening to much of the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s music together. After all the angst/anger-ridden grunge and gangsta rap that rose in the early/mid 90’s, then things started to really separate.

Let’s see if the music in this commercial is ever heard in stores or on elevators or in waiting rooms after 5-10 years from now... :) Not that a song becoming Muzak defines a “good“ song...but more, a song staying memorable enough to be heard for decades really says something about its a quality IMHO.

Just didn’t connect with me as in prior years. I give it a score of 75 on rotten tomatoes. :)
