If this really was their holiday ad, given the annum horribilis, they missed a big opportunity. They could have told a story about this year, how their products allow people to come together or feel better given that people can’t hang out with friends and family, etc.

Instead we get an inscrutable ad that evokes no emotion other than bewilderment.
I think they already went for that angle with those god awful Facetime meeting ads. Yes yes I know people liked them, but as a father and husband who has worked remotely for going on a decade now I found them ridiculous and more than a little tone deaf.

Apple today shared its annual holiday ad on YouTube, titled "The magic of mini," showing how music can help improve your mood.

As noted by Adweek, this year's edition of the ad features rapper Tierra Whack arriving home to her apartment in a dreary state, but her mood quickly improves after the HomePod mini adds a colorful, miniature version of herself to the equation. "Turn up the holidays with HomePod mini," says Apple. "A little joy never sounded so big."

The full-size HomePod and AirPods Pro also make brief appearances during the ad.

if it was not for the beginning, which had promise, I would not know what holiday is being celebrated. Previous years had a holiday feel in addition to the product placement. Overall - meh!

I kept wondering how they’re going to cut this down to a 30 sec ad for tv. 🤔

This ad is not the best in that it’s kinda nonsensical and just isn’t very effective to me.

However, a lot of these comments in this thread are pretty disgusting and lowkey racist. I expected it when I saw the ad, but didn’t expect so many of them. Disappointing given how much time I spend on this site.
Yeah, I didn't really get a holiday vibe from this ad, so I think it missed the mark in that way. I think of the holidays as primarily about connection to friends and family, and she was alone (except her mini me) the whole time. Which maybe is supposed to be a 2020 message or something? I dunno. But it didn't feel like a holiday ad to me. If it was just an ad for the HomePod mini at some other time of year then it would be fine (not my genre of music, but you can't please everyone).

But wow, these comments.

The issue I have with their advertising is they should be blowing up the networks with MacBook Pro commercials which they used to do back in the days of the Powerbook. I understand iPhone is the bread and butter but I cannot recall the last time I have seen a MacBook Pro commercial I think it was like 4 years ago.

I have not seen any Apple Watch commercials, HomePod commercials except online. They seem to like those little vignette videos with pro users that are way too long to air on TV.
I imagine they're saving any laptop/desktop ads for when hardware is redesigned. While big news in these parts, that Apple now has Macs powered by their own silicon, alone, is not mainstream ad-worthy. Most consumers are visual - want the latest, coolest looking thing. A new chip in an old design does not meet that criteria. Whereas a $100 Apple speaker with built-in Siri in time for the holiday shopping period, most certainly does. That some here don't like the ad is irrelevant. Not sure how many times this needs to be repeated: us old cats are are not the target audience. We're already invested. No need to pander to us. Accept and enjoy. :)

I appreciate diversity. I think Apple may have missed an opportunity here if, indeed, this is the holiday ad. Given all that has happened this past year, I remain hopeful for an inspiring holiday ad soon.

Soulless. Devoid of emotion. no holiday spirit.
Thank you - you finally helped me put a finger on why I no longer have any interest in Apple beyond the mechanical implementation of their products - the ad - is not "devoid of emotion" but rather devoid of sincerity

That, in a nutshell, is how I feel about Apple under Tim Cook - their ads, their products, the presentations, their politics feel hollow, without actual introspection, conviction or sincerity. It has become the committee, check-box blandness, with sufficient groomed talent to produce hits despite being devoid of an underlying convincing ethos.

Yep, unfortunately this thread is a great representation of peak 2020 societal attitudes:

"If I can't identify with it, it's crap."
"Since I've classified it as crap, anyone who would appreciate it is an idiot."
"Since I've determined they are idiots, their opinions are invalid, and I don't have to grant them any respect."

I don't listen to that genre of music very often, and I wouldn't do my *own* teeth like that, but I can still appreciate the cute story in the video.
"I am offended by your opinion, I want to speak to the safe space manager".

Not in regards to this kind of crap. I still listen to death metal and heavy metal mostly among lots of other types of music (classic rock, old school rap, reggae, edm, country a little, classical, etc). I know my main music was never mainstream and never will be. BUT this kind of garbage is in the same boat. You will NEVER have the masses looking back and think fondly of hearing this kind of garbage. Again, same with the music I listen to.
Not to be that guy, but... thats what they said about Elvis.
that’s what they said about The Beatles.
That’s what they said about Disco.
that’s what they said about new wave.
That’s what they said about synth pop.
That’s what they said about NWA.
That’s what they said about Gangsta Rap from the 90s.
That’s what they said about Crunk from the 2000s.
thats what they said about EDM and Trap from the 2010s.
just like every decade, the charts have a couple of classics that quickly become timeless, and a ton of gunk that’s forgotten. Music may have been more innovative back in the day, but it definitely wasn’t better than it is now. There has always been good and bad, and they’re always will be.
