Is it ok for Apple to not allow other default browsers and gimp their Webkit usage?

I don't use Chrome myself, but today was a big deal for a lot of people and I'm surprised that Apple isn't being heavily criticized for their anti-competitive behavior when it comes to browsers.

It's ridiculous enough that other browsers can't be set as default, but to actually gimp them by not allowing them to harness the full Webkit abilities of Safari is just blatantly destructive to end users and developers alike.

I'm seeing people say "you need to jailbreak" yet this board is overwhelmingly anti-jailbreak . Is this something we should have to jailbreak? Not at all. Apple has a mobile OS that doesn't even act like an OS should, and people don't seem to have much of a problem with it.

Why is that?

Can you make one damn thread without whining about something?

Even at those crazy marketshares, MS didn't ban users from changing the default browser once 3rd party browsers were made available.

No they just randomly re-installed IE after the user had removed it and reset it as the the default browser. They leaned on OEM's to not install the other browsers. It wasn't so much the percentage that got them in trouble but the tactics used to get there.

No, it's not okay, but I really don't care. I can't even tell a difference between Chrome and Safari speed despite the lack of "nitro" in Chrome.

Chrome is that good.

That totally blew my mind, I never thought about Squirtle being a Squirrel and a Turtle

I don't care if those tactics are used as long as I can set the default browser.

What browser is unbearably slow on recent hardware?
I'm talking specifically about on iOS, if that wasn't clear. And to answer, all of the third party browsers are unbearably slow (at least it feels that way to me) on any page which utilises a lot of Javascript.

Wasn't the whole Windows/IE thing over the fact that Microsoft had dominance over the personal computer OS market?

Apple doesn't have dominance over the smartphone OS market. Depending on which analyst report you read on a specific day, they may be slightly ahead of Android, but that's not dominance.

Apple is dominating the smartphone and tablet market, especially tablets. Android is rising fast on the smartphone side, so perhaps that will spare Apple from an anti-trust situation. For now.

You're talking about an OS for a PC. This is a mobile OS, which should not act exactly like a PC OS. People don't really care which browser they have, and Safari is probably the best choice because of the system integration (even if others could be set as default). I'm thinking that people are just satisfied with Safari.

Exactly. Few people care about setting a default browser, and only some of those people want to use anything but Safari. I really don't see what's wrong with it.

Have you heard about the Netscape case? MS actually banned Netscape completely from Windows, and they got into lots of legal trouble. That was so long ago that it's not really relevant, though.

I've never heard Apple users complain on about how the google maps app was so inferior against the android one and how Google didn't update it or didn't allow Apple to implement more back-end services like the android counterparts.

if google wants a fair treatment they had their chance in that case and they blew it

so there.

The closed off controlled user experience is what Apple is all about... it's that simple.

However I think it will inevitably change gradually, either because of legal or consumer based reasons.

Which is why you jailbreak your iDevice to remove it from the walled-garden that is the Apple iOS. I currently have Chrome as my default browser (on my iPhone 4s) and I am lovin it much more than Mobile Safari. Aside fro ma few quirks like Chrome not opening youtube urls in the Youtube app it works great..Apple has always restricted, "boycotted"(so to speak), sued any company that releases an app that is better than what they currently offer, and don't even get me started on the the Galaxy Nexus issue..

Either Apple wants to a) cripple the competition or b) keep iOS as safe as they can.

I actually wonder why Google Chrome uses Apple's slower JavaScript engine whe they can try to write their own engine for iOS. Does that long and boring agreement say they can't, or did Google just not choose to do it because they think it's just not worth it?

They know it's not worth it. Why give iOS users the best? Let the iOS user know there is something else better out there if they switch platforms.

Pretty much. Per Apple's terms, Google is required to use Apple’s version of Webkit (UIWebView) as the Javascript engine and for rendering. Gotta love fair play. Such a win for the consumer.

I think people don't care about this because Mobile Safari is actually good, and it's a mobile OS, not a full-on PC OS. If Microsoft forced Internet Explorer as default in Windows, there would be mass riots.

Lets see do I want more browsers or a more secure OS? Hmmm

If your so mad about Apple not giving developers access to nitro go to Android.

Apple doesn't give 3rd part developers access for very good reasons and I hope it continues to be that way

I know that everyone was excited to see Chrome for iOS, and to finally be able to sync with their desktop counterparts, but really, is it Chrome for real? No, it's not.

For me my mobile browser (Safari) will dictate what my desktop browser (also Safari) will be, since I browse on mobile more often. In order to make me switch both sides over to chrome, maybe Google should stop taking shortcuts when making apps and actually put effort in for once.

That's crazy and anti-competitive.

I don't think they should allow us to change defaults but I believe they should let you open link with third party applications. If you tap the link it takes you to safari, if you tap/hold it brings up the copy/past but also the option to "open in"

To me, it's very simple. He who owns the platform gets to decide. It's actually nice that Android is in the lead in terms of marketshare because it becomes harder to prove that Apple is being anti-competitive even if it poops on the face of Android licensees in terms of profits.
