just moved my sim to a different iPhone, and now iMessage won't activate....

EDIT: spoke too soon. Activated now.

I don't expect online services to be perfect, but this happens several times per year. When was the last time you've heard about Google having s system outage?
Apple has a massive user base and very comprehensive services. No system is perfect. Yet I do think Apple and it's users would benefit if Apple made the extra effort to improve the infrastructure. Not that it's poor, but I see no reason that Apple can't match the stellar reputation of Amazon.

In that case, Apple should send a notice of outage if its planned, or, do the updates while keeping the services up - a rolling update.

Updating their servers and knowingly affecting the end user, without notice is shoddy.

It would be "shoddy" if that were the case, but the fact remains — we don't know because Apple is so silent on these issues. Vague, general status updates. It would be great if they could raise the bar on that, both on the Status page and on app changelog notes. Some of their teams do a great job with this, but it's rare. Silence for future products is fine, but silence for existing products that people rely on ... not so good.

I'm not siding with Apple here, but I'm aware that they do use some of Amazon's AWS services. My free Outlook.com accounts were migrated from AWS to Azure - they work perfectly now. Two of my server services were moved from AWS to Azure earlier this year - they work perfectly now. One of my file sharing servers were moved from AWS to a co-located Mac Mini Server - it works perfectly now.

Netflix used/uses AWS. I use both Netflix and Prime Video - I'm still a bit surprised that Netflix often had "issues" but Prime Video always worked perfectly...

Apple's supposedly migrating some-to-all of its services from AWS - maybe those services will work perfectly now...?

I suspect that it's an architectural design issue....

I don't think people appreciate enough how complex these systems are... lots of "moving parts" to keep working and systems to keep updated. It's not like they build it and then walk away. It takes daily monitoring, maintenance and upkeep. And there's other factors, such as DDoS attacks. When's the last time (or first for that matter) of hearing about Apple's systems being under attack? These outages may be caused by such events. Other providers openly share when they are under attack, but Apple doesn't.

And that is why the executives are paid millions of dollars and such a large staff of professionals is deployed. The biggest "architectural design" issue is Cook as CEO / Eddy "the Slob" Cue as the operational executive. More and more it looks like Art Levinson is totally asleep as the board chair. So many people hired / so few products jumping out at us as innovative / so little time to right the ship.

I love Apple Music and use it often, but it can never replace music files I own on my own device. As long as I have battery my music is there.

Downloading updates now..now that this is back up and running is it safe for me to download the iPad Pro 9.7 update?

Tried logging into Game Center, the following error pops up:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (GKErrorDomain error 3.)

...and now, we wait. :-\

I just downloaded my copy of Steppy Pants. I'm happy.

I have had an issue for the last 3 months with my iCloud. It started after I upgraded to 1TB of storage so that I could store all my photos and videos in the cloud. After that I can no longer log into iCloud on a new mac. I can however login online but once there I can not access photos, notes, contacts, iCloud drive, or any iWork apps. If I try to open iCloud preferences on any mac or iOS device i own that is already connected to my iCloud the preferences panes crash. I have had an open case for 3 months for this. I have dealt with 4 or 5 Sr. Techs and they keep gathering info (screenshots and logs) from my mac and relaying the info to the engineering team but I never get to talk directly to them. It started as soon as my photos were uploaded. I finally got word last night that there is no issue with my account and that it was a server side issue that had to do with photos and other users have been experiencing similar issues. I was told that it would be fixed in a future update to iCloud but was told there was no ETA. I am really hoping this is them fixing it. I have a new iMac I can't log into iCloud on and get to any of my data. Really frustrating.

- Siri, turn right.
- Are you sure you want to turn left?
- Right, Siri, right!
- I'm sorry but I can't 'fight'. I'm just a smart digital assistant, you know.
- Siri, just stop the car here and let me out.
- Ok, I'm googling for you "stop the car here and let me out". Here are the first 5000 results.
- Open the door!
- Ok, I'm openi... sorry, internet connection is unavailable. Try again in a few minutes.

Might we hear "Just a couple of weeks ago we moved some of our data to our own servers and we hope to get 100% by 2017 (100% renewables etc)" at WWDC?

You can't seriously be suggesting that Apple is on equal footing with Google services. The article you posted earlier in this thread even pointed out that it was an 18 minute outage. Things happen occasionally, but they happen much less frequently with out hosts, and when they do happen those host are MUCH faster to address the problem.
Doesn't seem like I suggested anything other than what I mentioned in my post.

That said, to comment on what you bring up, there have been even days long outages with Google: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/03/google-gmail-outage_n_830229.html as well as Microsoft: http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-has-a-9-day-long-office-365-outage-2016-1

Also, even short and perhaps less frequent outages for some entries like Google, Microsoft, and/or Amazon can be much much more impactful on many more things given that they could affect many other services/products/companies out there beyond just their own: http://fortune.com/2016/04/13/googles-cloud-computing-turbulence/ and/or http://techcrunch.com/2015/12/08/snapchat-is-experiencing-an-extended-outage/

So just as there might be differences in frequency and timing (although even in timing it seems they have all seen long outages here and there too), there can also be differences in impact as well.

Does this Ship of Fools have a Captain? Apple is hurting, I suspect no leadership from Mr. Cook is at fault.
Yes, an outage certainly means that, just like most other companies must be in that kind of a state because they all go through some sort of issues and/or outages at one time or another.
