I hope updated MBP's and/or MB's are announced but what will likely happen is that Apple will use this sale to clear out their back stock of current models (and Nanos) in preparation for an after September release... sigh. I have no need for a Nano so I'd likely sell it to just help pay for the computer itself, but since I'd have to pay for tax, it seems like despite the free iPod, buying from a seller like Amazon where discounts make it the cost of edu + tax exclusion will be better suited for me...

We'll see what happens in the next few weeks in regards to rumors i guess

You mean October 3rd? One of the things Apple does with the back to school promo is clear out the previous models. They update them after the promo ends.

I've been under the impression that they have updated the Macbooks before or around the start of the Back to school, not to clear out previous sales. Look at the buyers guide.

Macbook 2006 - Back to school program started June 5, 2006

Macbook 2007- Back to school program started around June 5, 2007

So my question is do you think Apple will break with that tradition?

Arn, Is this FOR SURE going to happen on June 3rd?? I ask because I just bought my mom a new macbook pro this morning (you posted the story later). I wan't the nano but my mom wants her computer ASAP. My mom said I could cancel it as long as this is for sure going to happen, should I????

Absolutely!

No way Apple is updating MacBooks next week. After this promotion which usually ends mid September then yes soon after that. I think they are going to ride this model out a few more months. With no competitors updating systems (Dell, HP, Lenovo) to Montevina until fall, there is no reason to. I am speaking based on the education market. Apple with this upcoming promotion is top dog.

so if i get the current macbook... if and when the new one comes out.. will the current one just be done with.. no software updates or anything. done, finished??? apple wont do anything else to it for the ones who have the current ones?

Your notebook will be updated regularly through the OS updates. Your warranty will continue, so nothing should change at all.

I'm using the first generation Mac Mini, and I just had something fixed with 10.5.3 today.

A current Macbook will work very well for a long time.

Man! I bought an iMac yesterday from my campus bookstore. I would have waited but I wasn't sure when the iPod deal would come back and they only had 4 of the 2.4ghz 24" left. It was $400 off so I had to jump on it.

If this deal does pop up in a few days I hope they will let me return/rebuy it w/ an iPod. Do you guys think there is a good chance?

I mentioned the possibility to one of the employees there and he said "yeah you just contact apple." I'm pretty sure he was just giving me an answer to give me an answer and didn't really know any specifics.

But you don't think over the course of the summer that there won't be an update? Would they do a case update without a processor change? I have a feeling this may be like the iMac was last summer.

Since i don't really need the new iPod (just bought a touch :)), do you think I could like "return it" to the store and just get store credit and put that $200 towards mac office or airport express or something that I really would use? OR would that not be possible do you think? Do you have to send in a rebate with the barcode or something like that to get the money back? thus meaning i'd have to open the iPod up. This is all assuming that the offer is identical to the previous years.

I highly doubt that the rumored macbook/mbp update would be delivered on June 3rd, but if they do somehow come I will buy, if not, I'm going to see how long this promo lasts and what it offers and I'll likely just buy current gen. Well played.

hmm probably not. Only because you pay for it, and then get a rebate on it. so if you try to return it, you will just not get a rebate. Even if you wait till after you get the rebate, they are not going to let you return it as that would be like giving you the money twice.

You have to cut out and send in the UPC from the iPod box and the computer's box as well so no, you can't return it. Best you can do is put it on eBay or Craigslist.
