After all this waiting and the disappointment of the lack of iPod, I've decided to buy my mbp using a buddy's Family and Friends discount of 15%. Even better than education pricing, so I'm happy about that.
Education pricing is tiered, at least here in the UK. The Apple Education store has 3 links; Universities, Colleges + Higher Education establishments and Schools. Anyone can enter the Schools link and see education pricing but you have to be on campus to see the University link pricing.
I have been quoted a price of £2539.00 for the 6 core Mac Pro for my son who is at university. The rep matched the pricing (he said they are there to do that so that parents can buy for their kids) my son would see if my son had logged in from campus. ( I love him but It's a surprise and no way would I let him have access to my credit card).
The normal Apple Store price is £3022.00 and the Education Price (Schools) that is visible to all customers is £2780.40
I make my quote a 16% discount on the normal list price for us here in the UK. I suspect it would be the same in the US.

When I offered to give my son's details i.e. student number and course etc. i was told it was based on the "honor" system and that in most cases these details are not required.
Something to consider for those that perhaps have a little less cash to spend and a little less "honor".
