It would have been really nice if the iMac was powered via a USB-C so that the Power brick also could have a Thunderbolt port so a big disk drive could be attached off desk.
USB-PD is limited to 100W, so that's pretty much an instant non-starter. Doesn't mean they can't necessarily run TB3/4 channels over whatever data lanes the PSU ethernet port uses.

This might be how the "mag safe + more ports" rumour for laptops pans out: a new magnetic charging port (shared with iMacs because thinness apparently), with a presumably high speed data channel, allowing the charging brick to provide various types of IO. I can't wait to hear how the whiners find a way to complain about it.

Here's a quick and dirty mockup I did with how the 32" will look with the chin staying the same as on the 24". I don't people will have much to complain about (assuming we'll get pro colours and black bezels as well). It's all about proportions.

The stand will probably be a bit wider to match and the bezels not as thick, but you get the gist.
I really hope for Pro they kill the chin and go 16:10 with the display.

The color options are fine, but why not also provide options for the very popular Space Gray color? More of a laptop guy personally, so I really hope they don't make this move across all their lines.
Space Grey is a "pro" color - you will have to pay for that!
And wait - at least another 4 months :)

The chin is there to fit the motherboard and speaker array which otherwise would have to be put behind the screen, increasing the thickness and wasting a ton of space above where there would be just empty space. It makes total sense to design it this way.
I'd rather have a bump (or hunch) on the back than a chin :)

Yes, and I expect the pro and higher end models will have more a subtle professional look, and will most likely have black bezels. Whereas these are general consumer mass market iMacs. They will sell great too.
Almost certainly, and this was obviously going to be a consumer-focused event.

That said, I hope Apple gives us pro users some fun color options, too. I may need a big screen, but I really love the way these look.

I am really happy with the colours over the dystopian grey and blacks, but the front of this thing should have been either all same colour or black bezels. 6 months later they should fix the colours.

That being said, maybe some people prefer the white. I can see it works well in bright environments or places like healthcare or schools. Maybe the front should be a face plate that you can change to your preference like how the xbox 360 had.

Horrific. Those colors are egregious. Not even a space gray option? No ethernet? A MagSafe power cord on a desktop? Why, so it can fall out and shut me down in the middle of a document? No 10 key? I guess I keep waiting for a real M1 Mac. Not to neat a dead horse, but white bezels? Jesus!
What do you mean, no 10-key? They literally showed three keyboard options and one was a full-size numeric pad version with TouchID.

They love consumers so much, they are not giving them an ethernet jack on the cheapest model.

What ”special cable”? It would just be a slightly longer lightning cable with proper strain relief

That's the special cable. Lightning cables shipped with iPhones previously don't have the length or the proper strain relief. I think you just answered your own question there.

that is the sort of thing that they should be shipping with the iPhone anyway (plenty of people complain about frayed iPhone cables).

But they didn't. So we now have billions of these cables in the world that easily fray. This is why Apple doesn't allow you to use these cables while moving the mouse. Because you'd be spending $19 every several months replacing the cable which isn't better than just spending $10 for a pack of AA batteries to swap in your Magic Mouse 1. So they put the charging port on the bottom of the device and built in quick charge. I thought this through objectively and I think Apple made the right design decision.

Apple today unveiled the new iMac models in seven bright, colorful shades including Blue, Green, Pink, Silver, Orange, Yellow, and Purple, and Apple is including a whole series of matching accessories for each machine.

More expensive iMac models come with a color matched Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, power cord, and USB-C to Lightning Cable. Lower-end models feature the same accessories with the exception of the Touch ID Magic Keyboard, though an upgrade is available.

The Magic Keyboard features an aluminum base in the same color as the iMac with white keys, while the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad are equipped with a matching colored aluminum base. Both the Lightning cable and the power cord feature a braided design in the matching color, with the power cord also sporting a matching aluminum magnetic connector.

Right now, these color matched accessories are exclusive to the iMac. Apple is not selling the colorful Magic Keyboard with Touch ID or the color Magic Mouse options on a standalone basis.

Pricing on the iMac starts at $1299, and it will be available for preorder on April 30.

Am disappointed. Hoped for a really new iMAC. What I see appears to be a cobbled-together attempt to create the image of a new iMAC. That screen with the chin missing the Apple logo sticks out like a sore thumb. Has less SSD storage as standard. Still comes with only 8GB RAM standard; have to pay for more. Should have had 16GB standard. Still have to charge the Magic Mouse from the port underneath; can't use it while charging it. I'm now using a 5+ year old 27" iMac that had a 1TB HDD as standard. Thought I was going to retire it in favor of the new iMAC. Now, not so sure. What a bust.

That goofy integrated port is sheer brilliance for those who actually need the iMac wired instead of wireless. No more hanging an ethernet cable off the back onto a desk and down the side of the desk to the jack in the office. BAM, a one meter cable that lies on the floor. Need to take the iMac for service or move people, leave the power brick and move the iMac only.
If you say so. I'd prefer all of my ports in one place. I use wired peripherals with mine.

It looks like an unfinished product. God do I hate this Mac. White bezels. A power brick. Disgrace.
I think it’s deceiving for Apple to say the thin design is cuz the M1 chip as they took out the power brick from the machine that adds a ton of heat and now make you take up floor space with it. And I get they need a magnetic connection to power cuz the surface is too thin for actual plug. But how little sense does it make for laptops that could use magnetic connections to power don’t have them and desktop machines that don’t have backup power if disconnected now have them

First, the space required by the power brick would not greatly increase the size of the machine, so, yes, Apple is right that the thinness is largely due to the M1.

Second, apple is making new MBPs with magsafe again, so not sure what you’re all up in arms about.

The port is there, better than it not being there, right? Apple could have easily just omitted it if they had wanted to do that. An Ethernet port hasn’t been part of the MacBook Pro since the mid-2012 (mon-Retina model was released. Discontinued since late 2013, that port has been gone 8 years.

Everything I use is wireless. Wireless to the router and then wireless keyboard, mouse and trackpad on my 2019 iMac. I get the need for wired Ethernet, but having it on the power supply instead of the back of the iMac is no big deal.

I wouldn’t whine - that would be great and explain, why one TB port vanished
