I have a 5 and after 8.1.1, performance has suffered slightly. 2 examples are:

1. My home screen has 2 pages. 1st page full of apps and the 2nd page full of folders. Previously, opening and closing out of a folder was smooth with no dropped frames. Immediately after the update and since, opening and closing folders makes it jerk and drop frames in the animation.

2. Same issue with jerkiness and dropped frames but in the stock messages app when the keyboard is up and I activate Control Center.

I haven't really bothered to check other instances of dropped frames but this update seems to have made my iPhone 5 on iOS 8 act like how my old 3GS did when it was on iOS 6 - all jerky and disgusting, which shouldn't be the case as the 5 has one more cycle before it is considered the 'last supported' model and my 5 was perfectly smooth on iOS 8 and 8.0.1 (or was it.0.2? I can't remember).

Anyone else with a 5 or earlier with this issue? I wouldn't expect the 5S and above to display these though.

Try a hard reset, it is good to do after a update, might help

iOS 8.1.1 made my iPhone 5 laggier. Bringing up Spotlight, the keyboard takes much longer to appear.

Getting fed up of Apple trolling with the software on older devices to purposely make people buy a new iPhone. If they gave us a way to downgrade to iOS 7, then I wouldn't be complaining as much.

I think Apple should allow people to downgrade to an older version if they are not happy with the performance....

This, I agree with. Or at the very least, knowing the performance issues, Apple should have made iOS 8 the first version of iOS to only support devices with 64-bit processors. It's time for them to move to an all 64-bit, all retina line up. Yes, it's aggressive but it's better than users upgrading and having poor user experience due to performance issues.

I have an iPhone 4S, and I really don't need a bigger, thinner, faster or better device. All I want is to be able to use Safari, Maps, Facebook, Skype and some other basic things reliably. Why can't Apple either not allow iOS 8 to install on the 4S, or make iOS 8 function in a way that adds a handful of features while maintaining the same performance when you're not actually using those specific features?

I get that using 3rd party keyboards probably uses a bit more resources, but say you're not actually using one right now, what's still making every single animation slower? iOS 8 is pretty much identical to iOS 7 unless you specifically hunt for the few new features or you actually want to use them, so why is performance affected to such an extent?

I'd love it if Apple did a "Snow Leopard" release for iOS, targeted at old devices: iOS 8 adds new features for new iPhones, while it doesn't add many new features for the 4S, it actually makes it run faster with a better battery life. That would be cool. Until then, I don't see why I shouldn't stick with iOS 7: it's fast, it's got everything I need, it's got no problems that I know of.

Confirms my experience. I didn't notice any improvement in responsiveness after the patch.

I'm afraid to upgrade on my 5s. I don't know why anyone would upgrade to 8. Anything on a 4s

I'm running 8 on my 5s and have ZERO performance issues. Bugs for sure but speed wise it doesn't feel any different than iOS 7.

I'm glad that someone is doing these kinds of tests to precisely measure the performance hits that result when updating (which are so often reported anecdotally).

How is it [BS] as you call it? There is very slight improvements to app loading speeds, but overall system stability is actually consistently better, which is great

My iPhone 4s on iOS 6 runs smooth as butter and is rock stable. Too bad it just sits in a drawer while I use my Galaxy S5.

I may reconsider an iPhone someday -- when Apple allows you to run any version of the OS you want, which will happen several years after hell freezes over. Apple's updates screw up your iToy, and you're stuck, you can't go back without jailbreaking. That's beyond pathetic.

Who forced you to upgrade? My mother has an original iPad mini and an iPhone 5 and I told her not to upgrade right now. If I had an older device I would definitely wait to upgrade and if reviews said the performance sucked I wouldn't upgrade at all.

I upgraded my 5s a couple of days ago and it is fine. The 5 was a bit slower and the 4s was disappointingly slow.

I'd say upgrade your 5s with no concerns.

In 2015 Apple needs to:

1. make all iOS and Mac devices they sell retina
2. Touch ID on all iOS devices they sell
3. Eliminate A5. All iOS devices they sell should be A7 or greater.

Much better!!

My original iPad mini is much faster. The iPad was almost unusable in iOS 8.1.1. Now it feels a lot more like iOS 7. Very pleased. Also it improved battery life on my iPhone 5 by two whole hours. This is the update my devices have been waiting for

So your complaining about getting updates instantly on iOS, While your S5 wont get Lollipop for a while?

Im enjoying my 6 Plus dramatically more then the S5 that I came from(better cameras, better design, better performance and a brighter screen, better battery life)

Whatever your happy with, laggy TouchWiz UI for the win?

Don't for get eliminate A6, in addition to eliminating A5. Rest I agree with.
