If the system works as well as Craig says it will, then these people won't matter. If there aren't problems 3rd party reviewers will confirm that the incident was overblown. But if I was Apple I would be buying and testing Face ID with every different brand and type of sunglasses I can find, because you know some of the review sites will search high and low for a set that causes problems.

I doubt it will work with mirror sunglasses.

FaceID is this ->

original 'slide to unlock' except now, it's secure instead of a free-for-all.

.
(idk, a different way to look at it is all i mean by that)

improved UI though since it's a more fluid gesture instead of the skeuomorphic switch sliding.

I’d like to know why they didnt just blend the status bar and remove the notch. You can fix the notch via software, and I’m shocked the software magnifies it, instead of hiding it.

I mean probably because for 90% of the time when using it in portrait you are getting more real estate. You may disagree subjectively with the choice but obectively at least in height it will give you more space.

The passcode is still there with Touch ID. Touch ID is not still there with Face ID. If someone ends up not liking Face ID, or it doesn't work reliably, there is no going back to Touch ID. That's why people are worried.

When the notch first appeared in the rumors and people started saying they didn't like it I was indifferent. It didn't look like something that would really be annoying. Seeing the videos and backgrounds on the screen for the last few days however, I've changed my mind. That notch is annoying, especially when playing videos. I know that for a speaker and for Face ID and for the selfie camera that they need an area for those items to physically exist, but I think either a slightly taller phone with those items on a real, physical bezel or just blacking out the notch ears would be a better choice.

By default with video the notch is blacked out via the software.

Don’t think your math is correct on this.

Touch ID:
  1. Pick up phone
  2. Place Thumb on Home Button
  3. Press Home Button
Face ID:
  1. Pick up phone
  2. Smile :)
  3. Swipe up

Press and touch home in same motion

you don't actually have to smile.. it's :
1) pick up phone
2) swipe up

(i mean, in most cases, you're already looking at it due to step1.. picking it up)

If Face ID doesn't work then by all means lay into Tim Cook and Craig Federighi. If it does work, then why was the passcode a viable or acceptable backup to Touch ID but it's not a good backup for Face ID? It's still there and it still will work.

I thought the idea of getting rid of the floppy drive was insane, then I thought getting rid of the optical drive was insane. Now I think getting rid of touch ID is insane. I assume I'm wrong again.

It’s funny, the optical drive was the one change I wasn’t upset about, because shortly before my 2010 MacBook Pro started dying was around the time the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro was announced and I had just gotten a USB Blu Ray Player.

I'm just wondering if it's going to be like that HP face tracking camera that wouldn't track black people...

It uses infrared. It’s mapping the geometry of a persons face. The race and skin color shouldn’t matter. The other companies are just using the front facing camera and comparing photographs essentially

No. The primary devices for Face ID are the IR dot light source and the IR sensitive camera. They are looking at the way your face is physically laid out, not what your face looks like as far as color.

Not going to lie, at first I was one who didn't want Face ID, but now after seeing it in use and understanding much better how it works I can say I think this will be better than Touch ID. It will only get better from here as well. I think in future iterations of this once Apple has perfected face scanning, they will also incorporate iris scanning. Then they will also bring back Touch ID in an advanced form.

Same for me, I figured it'd be like android. But seeing how much effort they put into the front facing camera, I'm on the bandwagon for the X:p

“Combinations of biometrics”
My prediction: they’re still working on under-glass TouchID. Users will have the choice of being authenticated with TouchID, FaceID, or both. With the option of both, they can tout having biometric security that only 1 in 50 billion could fool. (1 in 50,000 for TouchID times 1 in 1,000,000 for FaceID)

This is exactly what I am thinking. Maybe iPhone XII.

dude, they literally announced a brand new high-end smart phone with updated design and features.. and touchID.......
about 3 minutes before they announced faceID..
o_O

if you don't want faceID.. and you'd rather have touchID..
why would you not get an iphone 8?
what feature(s) are you not liking on the 8 that you want on the X?

I doubt it will work with mirror sunglasses.

There are bound to be some physical circumstances that will prevent any system from working. Having wet fingers stops Touch ID now. Hiding a majority of your face in a ski mask would also probably defeat Face ID. From what Craig has said in the last 2 days, if you turn off the eye detection part of Face ID then the glasses probably wouldn't matter, but the overall security would be less.
