Looking at your phone and swiping up is the same step as well then

Nope not at all. I can unlock phone with my finger without ever picking it up off my nightstand. There are some things that Siri ( hey Siri) will not do with the phone locked.

I don't remember any complaints or worries about TouchID if it's going to work or not. The only concern that I heard a lot the first time Apples introduced is security. A lot of questions that time how safe our fingerprints stored on iPhones, or concerns if the government could access the fingerprint data. Fingerprint technology is already a matured technology when Apple integrated it on iPhone. On the other hand facial recognition is a fallable technology. Although Apple has added some layers of technology but a lot of questions how accurate or how safe it is. Considering the fact that it already failed on day one of demo that raises more qiestion. So many unanswered questions and uncertainties about this technology. It will get better that's for sure but it takes time.
I remember lots of people questioning whether TouchID would work well enough to be reliable. Some had used fingerprint scanners on laptops that didn't work well for them (I had had a laptop with a fingerprint scanner that worked well, so I remember this discussion clearly). Others complained that they lived in cold climates and wore gloves during the winter, which they would have to remove to use TouchID. And even after TouchID was released, people had/have a problem using it if their hands are wet or dirty. Some went so far as to say that if TouchID didn't work close to 100% of the time, for everyone, it wasn't worth having at all. TouchID is a fallible technology. But it is useful, so many people have come to rely on it. That's what Craig Federighi is saying will happen with Face ID. I tend to think he is correct.

Yes. And he wouldn’t have to be nasty about it. I think a lot of people are curious why they made that decision. I get why reassuring people about Face ID is important but he could have saved the last 5 minutes on the notch and what Apple’s thinking was behind it.
they were fresh out of courage.

Jony was probably viewing the eclipse with his bare eyes and now he's notch-blind.

It may not be permitted, but if it is I'm surprised no one has posted the 'Raiders of the Lost Arc' face melting pictures.

It's like this with every new technology... Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch, and even iPhone X. Instead of keeping an open mind, some people's first instinct is to assume the worst and try to discredit it. They never learn.

The dumbest thing I've read has to be, what if a robber forces you to unlock it by looking at it. What???? How is that any different than a robber putting a gun to your head and asking for your passcode or forcing you to unlock it with Touch ID? SMH
If a robber has a gun to my head, the last thing I'm really thinking about is the welfare of my cell phone.

i think you're not being very realistic..
i mean, here's the thing... you always look at your phone.. i honestly can't think of one use case where i interact with my phone without looking at it but needing it unlocked..

if you unlock the phone on your nightstand without picking it up then great.. but now what? what do you do next?

i still think the only reason we have faceID is because Apple couldn't get touch ID to work underneath the OLED screen in time
I know. Despite it not being true whatsoever, you and others will continue believing whatever you want because you want to. Have fun with that

you don't actually have to smile.. it's :
1) pick up phone
2) swipe up

(i mean, in most cases, you're already looking at it due to step1.. picking it up)
Wonder if it bothers to unlock if you're frowning? Maybe the phone doesn't wanna see you in a bad mood

Lol, you do realize that iOS has a setting that will allow you to prevent Siri from being used when locked ?

It's as simple as: if you look at the phone while holding your finger on the bottom of the screen: it unlocks, if you look at the phone without touching the screen: it shows the lock screen.

As I said, Apple personnel is reading all these posts about Face ID and is trying to quench all this negativity and uncertainty.
And when they keep bringing up Craig's failure on stage the is only solidifying that it really was a failure of the technology.

Bunch of liars. Everyone knows what went down, so who does he think he's kidding?
If your going to lie Craig, it's best to do it with something where millions of people don't know the real story.

Geesh :D

WHY DO CONSUMERS LOOK FOR SO MANY REASONS TO BE UPSET. This is legit futuristic sci fi tech that just a decade ago we would be reading about in science fiction all "heyyy wouldn't that be cool". Now we get it and we're all "but but buttttt"

Quit it with your butt's! Just enjoy the damn thing already!

i only use Siri to set timers.. (like, not joking)

so no, i didn't know that..
like what?

Unlock my phone, use Siri to send text message or call someone without me ever picking it up from my nightstand is one example.

Gotta be a better choice of words to express that.
It sounds like he's saying our faces will melt off. Oh my now I'm thinking of the movie face off.

I mean probably because for 90% of the time when using it in portrait you are getting more real estate. You may disagree subjectively with the choice but obectively at least in height it will give you more space.
You’re not really gaining too much vertical space. The time and symbols occupy the status bar so it’s not fully usable space.

The bottom is occupied by the tiny software home button, reducing space as well. It gives the illusion of more space, but it’s not much more real estate than my 7. I cant find it, but there’s a good article that shows image comparisons highlighting the inefficiency of the design.

That's a question for a designer. Not the head of software or even the head of marketing.

It takes up the space of a home button amount of space. Plus as someone who lives in a climate with rain or snow 5 months a year I do appreciate not having to remove gloves or wipe off the Touch ID constantly those months from now on. Not to mention while I’m sweaty at the gym.

You still gonna have to remove your gloves, swipe up to access the home screen

Don’t think your math is correct on this.

Touch ID:
  1. Pick up phone
  2. Place Thumb on Home Button
  3. Press Home Button
Face ID:
  1. Pick up phone
  2. Smile :)
  3. Swipe up

Wrong
iPhone on the desk leave it where it is press the home button and you’re in.

I'm insulted. Do you think I know nothing about Apple? Where is your proof Craig ever used the X before his botched demo on stage in front to millions? Didn't you read that FaceId had an epic fail in front of everyone?

Cook is responsible for this mess. I can't believe he has not been fired already
Not only do you nothing about Apple, I don't think you knows anything about tech and demos.
