I don't get this story: How much does the OLED screen cost to make/purchase from Samsung? I suspect that - even if it is expensive - it is still a tiny (10%) fraction of the sale price of the iPhone X.

And how much cheaper would a similar quality LCD cost? Half that? But that makes almost no difference to the headline pricing...You might save $50-100 at best...

I just got the 256 GB iPhone X over the weekend and I love it. Facetime is super fast and everything about it is sleek and elegant. I'm part of the Apple Upgrade program, so I'll actually pay less than $700 before I upgrade to the next one in 12 months, and AppleCare is included.

X is basically cancelled at this point. Get ready for the fixed versions with Ive back in charge.
And you know this how?

Shhh...rumors shall never be questioned or viewed with skepticism. They must be treated as fact. Always.

Sorry to break it to you guys but it wasn't the price that derailed sales.

It was the size.

It took a bit but customers got used to the 5.5 form factor, and they preferred it.

I hope they learn from their arrogance and lower the prices to what they should have been originally. Everyone who over-extended themselves financially to buy this phone because they had to have it only enable this behaviour and guarantee prices go up for everyone. The iPhone X is a good phone but it's not $1,000 good.

I was a bit took back by the size at first, but actually doesn't bug me one bit. I missed being able to use one hand to control the phone which I could never do with the + models.

For the price it’s not leaps and bounds over the Android flagships. The software experience on the Pixel - one could argue is far superior. Now if pixel gets the design right in the next iteration along with the great camera algorithm it will be a formidable opponent

"X delays as demand exceeds supply" was hitting every headline, I'm confused.

That was the initial rush? Also, Apple had manufacturing issues which restricted the amount of units that could be built, so the initial demand couldn't be met.

Now, the initial demand has gone, iPhone X isn't selling so well for whatever reason.

I think it makes sense to halve production on iPhone X screens if you are introducing a larger plus OLED model later this year which would require different sized panels. How would it make sense to order the same amount of iPhone X screens and an equal amount of Plus sized screens for the same amount of buyers.

I knew this thing was going to be a dud from the very beginning and why I got a Note 8 this time around. If animoji is going to be your best feature on a $1200 phone, than your screwed Apple. Time to get back to the drawing board and get something more compelling.

Skimming through the comment section... most or perhaps all have agreed it’s the price that has been the factor of slow sales.

But the smartphone market has matured to the point where any $400-$500 phone is good enough. It doesn’t help Apple to provide a iPhone at a price point of $1k.

Is it worth $1k? Well... we all spend hours on our phones, whether it’s gathering information or viewing various content. But that can be done on a $400-$500 as well.

I have the iPhone X and I enjoy the heck out of it. But the market for budget smartphones have gotten better....

If you didn't buy the X at launch, I don't see someone going to buy anytime soon. I'd imagine people who buy phones at this stage of the year are likely looking just to replace their old model and will likely just look towards the cheaper options. That doesn't surprise me all that much. I wouldn't go so far to call the X a failure though, you'd have to look at the total number of iPhone's and revenue from their 2017 lineup, which includes iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. My guess is they are doing just fine and somewhat expected this.

I don't honestly see what Apple was supposed to do with the X. The price is crazy because the OLED panel. If they hadn't released an OLED phone they would've been raked over the coals for being behind Android. It's a lose-lose.

I guess I don't fully understand this reasoning. You can get other flagship devices with OLED screens for much less than $1,000 ... and have been able too for a couple years. OLED isn't some new groundbreaking expensive tech. Yes it's more than LCD, but shouldn't be the reason it hit $1,000 it's just an excuse for it.

Right now you can get:
Samsung - Galaxy S8+ 64GB for $824
Galaxy S8 64GB for $724.99
Google Pixel 2 for $649
Google Pixel 2 XL for $849

And you can get many even cheaper with carrier promos.

I'm not worried about the price, I'm just not sensitive to the difference between $800 and $1200, it doesn't matter to me. I'm also not that concerned about OLED vs LCD, my iPhone X looks beautiful but I thought my 7+ did too. If they go back to LCD next year I really won't care. I'm more interested in the new features they produce and the progression of iOS that I am in price or screen tech.

While I bought an iPhone X, I'm kinda glad it isn't doing well. After tax for a 256GB version, I spent over $1,200 on my phone. That is a ridiculous amount of money for a phone. I really don't want that to become the norm for an iPhone.

Again, Apple has confirmed nothing. Neither you nor I know if X sales are slow or not. And slow compared to what?

Yet nothing in Apple’s guidance has suggested higher margins. For the holiday quarter Apple guided to gross margin between 38 percent and 38.5 percent. That is completely normal. If Apple was charging more just because then margins would be higher but they’re not. That’s what I never get about the the complaints that Apple is gouging. If you look at their financials, gross margins and net profit margins are consistent from quarter to quarter.

Music to my ears. I'm an iPhone X owner. I told everyone I know that asked my thoughts to pass on it. Simply don't think it's worth the money. Apple needs a wake-up call. Many consumers don't want to spend $1000 and up for the best iPhone available to them.

I think apple misread the situation with pricing the X so high. I have one, and its a good phone, but I will say its not 1,000 good.

In most parts of the world it's even worse.
1150€ for example.
You can't explain this difference with taxes. Even if I take away our 19% VAT that's 966€ which equals $1198.

800€ would be totally fine for this device and more in line with US pricing. Heck, for 800 I might even recommend this fine piece of tech. But right now I'm 1 of just 2 iPhone X owners at work and median income at our workplace is Germany's median income x 2.

Adoption rate outside of Apple's home markets like US, UK and Australia is going to be quite low.

They priced my family out of the market and we're in the upper middle class demographic. No way would I ever pay more than 800 for a phone.

I’m just going off the report.

And adding my thoughts to it... I understand Apple hasn’t confirmed anything. But this is the 2nd time it’s been reported a cut of iPhone X production.

Slow compared to what Apple has been known to sell... Apple competition is only itself... normally Apple is known to sell in record numbers of iPhones. Now, we are getting “reports” of slow sale numbers.

OLED displays make sense on an larger device where you may need a high quality display for editing images and so on. The OLED display makes **** all difference for day to day use on a phone. For the the premium we have to pay on a phone it makes little sense right now. The battery life on the iPhone X is still rubbish so it's not like I can even spin any positively citing amazing battery life thanks to low energy OLED screens.

OLED looks incredible on the iPhone X and Galaxy S8, I use my phone all the time and for watching Netflix etc, why wouldn't I want an incredibly display? The display is the only thing that interests me on the X vs the 8.
Also I thought the X was noted to have quite good battery life? Especially compared to my 6S.

The standard iPhone 8 4.7" is looking a bit dated with its standard LCD display on a £700 phone when compared to the competition. So maybe you don't care for OLED but I certainly do.
