Weird move, Apple, if it's true those machines won't Internet-install. At least you'll still have the recovery partition, for running Disk Repair etc. (That was always my main need for a disc.)

They really should at least give you a Snow Leopard-based emergeny disc still! And it's not too late to make that right: they could mail a SL disc to everyone, or (more efficient) to everyone who asks.

The primary and best re-install method, of course, remains Time Machine (or other clone). That was true last month and will be true next month. And if you have no backup? Your problems are worse than you think...

Clone your original drive. Then if you need to restore, simply clone the original drive back. Problem solved.

Repeat after me:

"Apple is NOT perfect. Apple does occasionally make stupid decisions."

Here's another great idea. Why don't we just stop having hard drive crashes?

Wow them changing the keyboard to Mission Control officially ********* expose.... now there is no turning back. Dang it! I am moving back to Windows when SL isn't supported anymore...

Have fun with Windows.

Am I the only one who hates the new default Lion desktop? I think it looks way too busy and cluttered and the colors aren't even remotely beautiful like Aurora's are. Very surprising.

Finally, Apple no longer includes restore discs of any sort, a move that could cause difficulties for the occasional user who finds the need or desire to perform a clean install of Lion on a bare hard drive. Apple's new MacBook Air and Mac mini models support a Lion feature called Internet Recovery that allows the operating system to be reinstalled to a bare hard drive, but other current hardware now shipping with Lion does not support the feature.

Is this actually confirmed? This was true for the old models that were user upgraded to Lion (although Apple could remedy this with an EFI update in the future), but has anyone actually tested the ones shipping with Lion in the new packaging? I think you're jumping to conclusions.

This makes me wonder....if you purchase a new Mac with Lion already installed do Lion and the iLife apps show in the store as "purchased"? So do you have a license to re-download them if needed?

Discovered this one the hard way. We just got in a MacBook Pro, and I netbooted it to install some software off of our DeployStudio server. Unfortunately, the wrong job was selected and it wiped the hard drive. No problem, I thought, go back and grab the... install... discs... crap.

I'm going to shoot AppleCare a question about this, see what they have to say for people in my situation.

That sucks. It's not like there isn't a large enough markup on Macs to throw in a USB drive like they did with the MBA a year ago

I saw that as an advantage over a windows box that you got actual full recovery disks with the systems. No one could be against that in their right mind on here.

EDIT:
LOL a negative 3 for the above? Really!??? Wow! LOL I'll add another one. ; )

lol, this rumor is a bit too obvious, I'm pretty sure we all new the graphics on the box would be updated to Lion desktop..:p

You don't have to purchase Apple's flash drive installation option if you've already purchased Lion from the app store. All you have to do is buy an 8GB flash drive from Best Buy or somewhere and copy the installation image to the drive using Disk Utility. Then you've only spent $20 or so extra instead of $69 extra.

That being said, I believe there are currently issues doing so with MacBook Airs and Minis. I have one of the new Minis and, other than cloning a drive and dropping it in the system, I believe the only way to currently to a fresh install is via the online recovery method. That's not exactly convenient if you do not have Internet access (for whatever reason) or you don't want to deal with waiting for the recovery download to come from the Apple servers. I don't know exactly the story on the Airs yet, but I'm sure I'll find out once my 11" shows up in the next few days.

That being said, for all other Macs, you're absolutely right about just making an inexpensive bootable flash drive. That was my first inclination until I discovered that wouldn't work for Minis and Airs. Now I'm just hoping (and assuming) the official Apple Lion USB drive will be compatible with ALL Macs.

Windows 7 is amazing. So is Snow Leopard and Lion. You do know that two great products can co-exists right?

Windows 7 is the first acceptably usable version of Windows since Windows 2000. I wouldn't call it amazing. It's merely pretty good for Windows.

Windows 7, which you might have used, and Windows 8, which nobody has really used, is "a amazing POS"? Spoken like a true Macophile.

I am hardly a Macophile(yet), having never owned an Apple product. I just signed up here after the iPad was announced, because I thought it was a great idea and would really shake things up. Turns out I was right...

I use Win7 (and Windows as far back as 3.1) and I think Win8 is going to be a colossal mess. It is a completely bifurcated OS. It switches to a Tile OS (that I loathe) and you run legacy apps in what almost looks like a Desktop VM window, that has nothing to do with the main Tile front end. Heck Parallels better integrates windows in the Mac OS, than Win8 integrates its own desktop!

Further on top of this it will have x86 HW that actually does run legacy SW and ARM HW that doesn't. IOW it is bunch of fragmented unrelated ideas thrown out together instead any kind of unified design. It might just be the point where I switch to a Mac for my next computer.

Make your own USB boot disc.

If you're not competent enough to do this, than you probably don't care if your new machine ships with install discs or not, because you wouldn't know what to do with them.

Two Choices in the world.

1. Educate yourself, and save money.

or

2. Remain ignorant, and pay through the nose.

Agreed! The new one is OK, but the old one was great. Easy enough to revert that, luckily.

Good questions! If Internet install really IS supported, then I'd withdraw my complaint about lacking a disc.

Wow... I'll explain it then: The desert is what we would call a "hot" place, as in, it is not a cold place. In such an environment, water is valued because it's what we humans use to keep our bodies cool. In the middle of the ocean, there is plenty of water. In such an environment, water is less valued because there is a ton of it all around you. This compares to the windows world where, while windows 7 is sure a nice OS, it's only considered that relative to what the windows world is used to, such as Vista.

I guess philosophy is wasted on people here though... I think it was pretty clear. Oh well. :p

But your analogy made me laugh too, since you were trying to imply that a glass of water was worthless when youre in the sea. The first thought that came to my mind (like others here) was that since you cant drink sea water, a glass of drinking water is still quite valuable.

In your case, lets just tweak the analogy and say: Its like having a glass if water in a sea of Steve Job's coolaid.

This is just one more reason as to why I finally called it quits on Apple after being a mac user for 9 years. I went back to Windows, and I gotta say I love me some Windows 7.

I don't mean to sound soo negative, but Steve's thoughts that no one uses CD's anymore is recockulous. Not everyone has high speed internet...and sadly...some people still don't have internet at all (shudders).

Also.. Apple sure has gotten a lot more greedy in the last few years. $69 for a USB stick!!!
Don't get me wrong... I really like OSX, but Apple is dumbing down the idea of owning a computer soo much. I actually enjoy cracking open my stuff and swaping out parts. I don't want to pay Apple to replace a hard drive for $200 when I can buy a hard drive at best buy for $40 and do it myself.

I know exactly how you feel. I don't like the Disc drives disappearing either with the exception of the Air where it is necessary to make the computer that small. Although I am getting to the point where I think apple is sacrificing too much to make a computer just millimeters thinner. I want a new mini too, but I wish there was a disc drive still in it, whats wrong with the computer being just a tad bit taller to add that feature back, seriously. The other thing that's pushing me away from apple is the complete drop of PPC support so soon. I figured they would support software for Leopard a bit longer because it was the last PPC capable OS X, but with the release of Lion Safari has now dropped PPC support entirely. That was the last Browser to completely drop PPC support so I can't even run a current browser on it anymore. iTunes is the only apple program that still (for now at least) supports PPC. Its such a waste considering my Dual G5 performs pretty well considering its age, I don't want to throw it away yet. It won't be long before I am back to being a windows only user again with Apple going this direction with hardware.

Pretty good is even a bit of an exaggeration. Its still the same old windows, with a few UI tweaks, that are above and beyond, NOT GOOD.

I used Win7 for several months trying to give it a chance, and I ran it on a machine that was much faster than even the average fast PC, and it still sucks.

There is zero comparison between Mac OS and anything else. Even trying to claim otherwise is just an attempt at stirring up animosity. Its simply false.

Windows always has been, continues to be, and always will be, solely for people who don't know any better.

Today its for people who need "innernetz", but want the cheapest ugliest way of getting there.

Someone probably mentioned this already, but I didn't bother to RTFT, so anyway here's my opinion...

This is NOT a big deal. Anyone who might be concerned by this (people who would want to clean install) already know how (or how to find instructions) to create USB/DVD install media.

Standard users won't replace their hard drives "just because", and so they're not affected at all. If the hard drive dies under warranty, they'll get it replaced from Apple, who will install Lion for them. If it's out of warranty, they'll still get Apple or a nerdy friend to replace the hard drive, and we've already established that both of those groups are capable of installing Lion in multiple ways.

So, what again is the problem?

You claim a glass of water has more value in the desert, than in the middle of the sea. Is this water in the glass drinkable? If it's for drinking purposes than I'd say its of equal value when surounded by vast quantities of undrinkable water, also in the desert you have the chance of finding rivers, an oasis.

The Desert is a hot place? Not Cold? Did you know the hotter a desert gets, the colder it gets at night, as hot, dry air is unable to retain any heat, soldiers in Iraq literally suffered from Frostbite at times. And pretty much any desert drops below freezing temperature at night. It snows in Afghanistan in the winter.

The more you know ;)

It's great they are putting Lion on all the new Macs now. Is the box with the updated Lion desktop actually news though?

I mean come on.. it's a box. Just seems so petty and meaningless to report on or even desire a new box.
