Buy a big enough flash drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner or something similar, and then put the flash drive someplace safe. That should do the trick.

You claim a glass of water has more value in the desert, than in the middle of the sea. Is this water in the glass drinkable? If it's for drinking purposes than I'd say its of equal value when surounded by vast quantities of undrinkable water, also in the desert you have the chance of finding rivers, an oasis.

The Desert is a hot place? Not Cold? Did you know the hotter a desert gets, the colder it gets at night, as hot, dry air is unable to retain any heat, soldiers in Iraq literally suffered from Frostbite at times. And pretty much any desert drops below freezing temperature at night. It snows in Afghanistan in the winter.

The more you know ;)

For the love of Oatmeal, people. What he's saying is that Windows 7 is an amazing OS in the Windows world- as in, people who do not use any other OS - because Windows users dont know any better! Do you all get it now? Geez! Do you all get it now? He's saying OS X is better!

Wow... I'll explain it then: The desert is what we would call a "hot" place, as in, it is not a cold place. In such an environment, water is valued because it's what we humans use to keep our bodies cool. In the middle of the ocean, there is plenty of water. In such an environment, water is less valued because there is a ton of it all around you. This compares to the windows world where, while windows 7 is sure a nice OS, it's only considered that relative to what the windows world is used to, such as Vista.

I guess philosophy is wasted on people here though... I think it was pretty clear. Oh well. :p

LMAO!

I love it when people abuse the term "philosophy" to try to sound smart, my philosophy is your philosophical point was non sense to begin with and calling it "philosophy" doesn't give it any more validity.

This makes me wonder....if you purchase a new Mac with Lion already installed do Lion and the iLife apps show in the store as "purchased"? So do you have a license to re-download them if needed?
Yes you do. Just installed the iLife updates from the App Store on my new Air. On first start, the App Store checks if the system is entitled for the free updates.

Apple is the only company that is getting rid of optical drives and physical media.

You can say what you want about Apple, but they got balls...they are moving forward. Personally, I could count the times I used my optical drive on one hand in the last 3 years.

CD will be with the Floppy discs....soon.

+1

People reacted the same way about floppies too when they were dropped. CDs and DVDs are becoming less and less needed everyday.

I for one are ready to move forward and put my CD drives in the same box as my Bernoulli, Syquest and floppy drive. I'm dating myself if you know what they are. :D

You being unable to compute this is not my problem.

Compute what you are basing the usability of an operating system by comparing System Preferences with Control Panel. Thats one of the most ignorant things I've seen. How about comparing something like Finder to Explorer or the MS Kernel to Darwin. How about something that has some meat on it.

Maybe its just that you can't make those comparisons because you are ignorant in the subject. I manage Windows and Mac Servers for a living. They both have pro's and con's. I am a Mac user but I can tell you Windows 7 and Windows 2008R2 are great OS's.

I am a bit surprised about Dashboard, however--I use that more than I've ever used Launchpad, which so far has been about twice to see what it was all about.

I am sure many will agree with you but I am in the opposite camp. Dashboard uses quite a bit of memory that doesn't get reclaimed (until you reboot or kill from activity monitor) so it is one of the first features that I hide on new Macs.

People and their CD drives are just hilarious.

I don't take you seriously and neither does anyone else. You don't need it.

If you happen to be a rare case, where you needed optical every day, all day, then fine, your 1 and 10,000,000 case is noted. BUY AN EXTERNAL.

Its not complicated at all. Get a better machine thats designed without the stupid useless optical drive, and buy a USB device for your once-a-month disc drive needs.

No one has ever offered a valid opinion on why we still need these drives. People scream, "Internet!" as if that has something to do with why we need optical drives. Everyone has access to internet. If you don't, at all, then you're simply not in a situation where you're doing much with your computer....and you certainly don't need something modern.

Crazy whiners who whine just to whine. Keep watching your DVD of Caddyshack for the 100th time.

I own a DJ company, the simple fact is DJs, need to be able to play some random song that a client brought with them. Or a performer at a wedding has a CD they will use. It is a neccesity for some fields.

Let me answer the inevitable question.

The macbook pro has TWO usb ports. I use one for my DJ software, and one for a DJ peripheral, or for my iPhone data tethering. Neither one of these things (besides the iPhone) can work on a hub so that does not leave any space for an external drive. Having the drive available is important to me. Yes I said, to me.

I don't want to have to think about bringing a external drive, or having to buy 5 drives for a given event on a weekend. That's one more thing to worry about.

Yea, thanks. We all got what he was 'trying' to say. Its just that his analogy sucked.

True but they also want more revenue from their iTunes/App stores.

This is just one more reason as to why I finally called it quits on Apple after being a mac user for 9 years. I went back to Windows, and I gotta say I love me some Windows 7.

I don't mean to sound soo negative, but Steve's thoughts that no one uses CD's anymore is recockulous. Not everyone has high speed internet...and sadly...some people still don't have internet at all (shudders).

Also.. Apple sure has gotten a lot more greedy in the last few years. $69 for a USB stick!!!
Don't get me wrong... I really like OSX, but Apple is dumbing down the idea of owning a computer soo much. I actually enjoy cracking open my stuff and swaping out parts. I don't want to pay Apple to replace a hard drive for $200 when I can buy a hard drive at best buy for $40 and do it myself.

I went through that phase for 2 years myself. Well, as much as I like a lot of Win7 features (and miss them), the PC laptop trackpad was driving me crazy and it just took longer to get some things done on a PC. So I'm back to Mac (was Mac user for 20 years).

I'm not knocking Windows 7, it's a fine OS, I just felt that the lesser of two "evils" was the Mac. On top of that, my daughter got a new MacBook Pro and I got her 6 year old hand me down MacBook that runs like a champ.

Yeah, maybe OS X is dumbed-down in a way, but then it's not half-baked like Windows 7.

You know what it comes down to? Saving TIME. Things just work on OS X. The apps. I had so many difficulties, because, let's face it, Windows is as dumb a rock more than you like. Which is why it is half-baked.

Windows is fine, I just prefer no hassles and I have never had a problem with OS X (well, one little bug a long time ago when the disk image would not disappear off the desktop), but with Windows??? Plenty of annoying stuff.

Yes, Apple can drive you nuts at times. But I'd rather be nuts than frustrated.

Well, some are and some aren't, and even the hot ones aren't hot all the time.

But we'll go along with you for this little bit.

In such an environment, water is valued because it's what we humans use to keep our bodies cool.

Among other things. You forget that one can die from dehydration without ever being overheated at all. But let's continue to follow for a bit.

In the middle of the ocean, there is plenty of water. In such an environment, water is less valued because there is a ton of it all around you.

Except that drinking water and sea water are not the same thing at all. Sea water is toxic taken internally, and drinking it in significant amounts will kill you pretty quickly. You'll die of dehydration, mostly, whether the environment is cool or hot.

I guess philosophy is wasted on people here though... I think it was pretty clear. Oh well. :p

Philosophy isn't wasted here, but poorly-conceived analogies in contravention to real-world facts get happily slapped down. As stated, your analogy by itself could be taken to imply that, say, OSs really aren't equivalent; some might even be actively harmful if used (drinking water vs sea water).

Bad philosophy, or more correctly sophistry, is rightly seen as nothing more than masturbatory mental games, which might be fun for the one spinning them, but not so useful in making sense of the real universe.

The point you were trying to make is certainly arguable. The analogy you used didn't help, unfortunately.

Nerds always suffocate themselves with semantics. Surely we're used to it by now. :D

We all understood what he was trying to say. Its just that his analogy turned out to be ironically funny. So we were razzing him for that - having a bit of fun with it. Lighten up friend.

will be interesting what the mbp's are going to look like when they lose their optical drive in the next model
