Function Keys

Is it possible to change the function keys on my MBP bought a few days before Lion? Literally, I bought it on the evening of the 15th. I am not above taking this back to the Apple store and asking them to do it, assuming that I could also reassign the function keys. I suspect that I will get to like Launchpad and was disappointed that it instead focused on Dashboard, which I will never really use. Seems laggy and the only useful tool there is weather, which I have via Meteorologist.app.

Suggestions?

Nobody cares what you want, especially Apple. They care what most people want. Clearly your needs and requirements are so far away from the mainstream (ie. you enjoy swapping out computer parts) and to expect Apple to cater their products to you, when you don't represent the average consumer, is pretty ridiculous. I don't think Apple will miss you- they gain another 100 customers for every person like you that leaves. And it's not $69 for a USB stick- if you haven't noticed, it's for a brand new OS, + a USB stick. Apple has seen its insane success primarily through what you call 'dumbing down', or streamlining their products. They're posting record sales, revenue, profit, stock price, and customer satisfaction. Yet, they're 'doing it wrong' because you, specifically, are not pleased. Try to grow a bit, and realize that you're asking apple to shoot themselves in the face and ignore everything that has made them successful, just to please you.

Oh, and you want people to people who don't have internet? I mean.. really? What percentage of their market is that, like 0.000001%? I have yet to meet someone who owns an apple product, or even a laptop from any manufacturer, who doesnt not have internet access. But I'm sure that mythical person exists somewhere, as its used as the justification for your argument. That pretty much says it all, in terms of the ridiculousness of your post. Apple will keep ignoring everything you want, which is exactly what they should do to remain successful.

GRRRR!!!!!!!!! :) Soldier boy tell em haha

Good luck with Windows 8.

Sincerely

Lion users

Thanks! I'm looking forward to Windows 8!

I use both OSX Snow Leopard now Lion and Windows 7.

A little Rant:
Personally, I prefer Windows. It just allows me to be more productive while OSX Lion have too many eye candy effects that I simply don't need and it doesn't increase my productivity. Although they do look neat at first. I also wish Lion had more ways to increase a user's productivity and not just re-designing everything to look 'pretty'.

I did try out air drop but it's not that useful if you have Dropbox or Google Docs even. Launpad is another way to present your apps folder. Full screen (on a browser- like Safari or Chrome) is nice but it doesn't work on all apps. And with every OS upgrade there are bound to be small bugs...Like with Wordpress, I don't like to upgrade too often b/c upgrading can bring more headaches than solutions. Ahhh...
/rant.

Yes. Check System Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts.

sadly...some people still don't have internet at all (shudders)...

Also.. Apple sure has gotten a lot more greedy in the last few years. $69 for a USB stick!!!...
I don't want to pay Apple to replace a hard drive for $200 when I can buy a hard drive at best buy for $40 and do it myself.

That would be one in a million I suspect who have no Internet service at home, at work, or just down the street at Starbucks. I am in China and there is a Starbucks in every major shopping complex.

Try to do the math again: $69 for the combo stick and Lion, subtract $30 for Lion, and you have a $39 stick.

No one is stopping you from installing your own $40 HDD. By the time you are ready to do it, I'm sure the special cable will be available from non-Apple sources. BTW, at the Best Buy site, there is no $40 HDD. The lowest price is $60, and no spindle speed disclosed; with WD OEM (out of box) drives, this is usually also missing from the sticker on the drive, so it is probably 5400 RPM.
HDDs at Best Buy

Just like the floppy drive.

This is just one more reason as to why I finally called it quits on Apple after being a mac user for 9 years. I went back to Windows, and I gotta say I love me some Windows 7.

I don't mean to sound soo negative, but Steve's thoughts that no one uses CD's anymore is recockulous. Not everyone has high speed internet...and sadly...some people still don't have internet at all (shudders).

Don't get me wrong... I really like OSX, but Apple is dumbing down the idea of owning a computer soo much. I actually enjoy cracking open my stuff and swaping out parts. I don't want to pay Apple to replace a hard drive for $200 when I can buy a hard drive at best buy for $40 and do it myself.

Remember back in the day when Apple did the same thing with floppy drives? At the time we, including myself, thought Steve must have lost his mind. Turned out he was completely right. I haven't seen or touch a floppy drive in I don't know how long. And honestly the same is going to be said for optical media. They just are going out the door when it comes to personal computers. Most people can't remember the last time used their optical drive anyway. Also, try thinking about it this way: Apple removed the optical drive; a mechanical device that can easily break if your kids start shoving money, crackers, etc inside. Instead they opted for a more modern solution, internet distribution. You can still use CD/DVD sharing if you're that broken up about it. I actually removed the optical in my previous macbook pro and went with a second HD. Anyway, to each his own I guess.

Enjoy. I've used and supported Windows for over 20 years, and bought my first Mac two+ years ago. I will never again buy a Windows PC. Gripe all you want about Apple, but they will never even come close to the consumer hostility that MS still practices.

The internet is the computer. No need to have a computer without it. Especially no need to have a Mac.

That's you. Not the vast majority of users. Most people want a refrigerator that keeps their food cold. Only a small percentage want to disassemble their fridge on the floor of the kitchen and upgrade the compressor and coils. Why do some geeks think everyone wants to rip the skin off their computers and peer inside at the muscles and tendons? As far as the USB price is concerned, I don't believe it has to to with greed. It's a combination of social engineering (they want to discourage you from buying them) and the realization that there won't be a huge demand, so cost per unit to produce will be higher. Apple has $76 billion in the bank, and can't make their products fast enough. They don't need your 30 bucks.

You seem to suggest that Apple has not made horrible business decisions. Maybe you haven't been an apple user long enough to know this but their list of hardware and software debacles is actually quite long even rivaling that of Microsoft. A recent example was the omission of a FW800 port from the original 15" macbook pro in 2006. Fanboys of the time cheered at the demise of the Firewire technology. Obviously Apple brought it back with their later iterations of the model and has since implement it in ALL their models including the brand new Thunderbolt display...

I know this isn't really to do with Apple but... What happens when you want to install Windows on your mac that does not have a DVD Drive? There are ways to do it, but not without any tweaking.

I don't care about analogies, just get the definitions right.

The desert is what we would call a "hot" place, as in, it is not a cold place.

From the "Beat a dead horse department"

A desert is defined by precipitation, not temperature.
Antarctica is a desert.

There are two easy ways that don't require tweaking:
1) use DVD or CD sharing from another computer, or
2) plug in a cheap external CD/DVD drive.

I think that it's extremely unlikely that sharing would work - do you have any references to support that?

Unless sharing were implemented at the EFI/BIOS level so that primitive boot-time IO were supported - I don't think that a Windows DVD could boot from a shared drive, nor would the Windows installation scripts run from a shared drive.

Solution: Open "Boot Camp" app on your Mac that doesn't have a DVD drive. The app actually tells you how to do it.

Wow them changing the keyboard to Mission Control officially ********* expose.... now there is no turning back. Dang it! I am moving back to Windows when SL isn't supported anymore...

So we should not see you here any more soon, right?:p

Interesting rant I must admit as someone who use both operating system I find way to much eye candy on windows 7 which does absolutely nothing to the productivity of the OS. For example having to minimize "windows" every time I want to do something on the desktop but I still want to move files is time consuming. Programs that seem to not response intuitive as they should or my favorite I still after all these years can't move a file or folder and have the nested folder open up automatically like in OSX. What is up with that. I hate windows explorer is half ass code. About the only thing that Windows 7 brought that was productive was how it now handles "windows" when you move then to the side of the screen, but that not that much.

Have fun on Windows 7 with more eye candy aka. Windows 8.

Windows 7 is amazing in the windows world, but I think we can all agree it would make a poor replacement for OS X. The value of a glass of water in the desert is far greater than in the middle of the sea. ;)

Your "deep thought" is quite flawed.

Simple program download called ODSsetup try it really easy to use. I will be you that if you actually document how many times you use a dvd on your laptop its minuscule if any. I for one rather a second HD or more battery.

I know that the Air's benefit from not having that useless medium. Imac's on the other hand will probably have them for some time.

Please try again fangirl.

OS X vs Windows which I use both, is a joke, Windows does not compete.

Windows 8 aka Windows 7 with more eye candy.

As for where water has more value, they are both equal. That zen garbage is just that poop on a stick. You can't drink sea water but your mind wants to even more than on the desert as any Navy Squid will tell you. Sound off Squids. :D

Crap and I just bought a SL equipped Macbook Pro 15" yesterday..

Is this even worth returning and waiting for the Lion equipped model? If it's just keys mapped differently (or just different icons on the keys) I'd expect people to just tell me to keep my current unit..

Think different. :D:apple:
