Apple's Face ID Feature Works With Most Sunglasses, Can Be Quickly Disabled to Thwart Thieves

Ok so thief steals your phone and flashes it in front of your face to unlock it before running off...

They still need your face to make purchases with apple pay...
They still need your apple ID password to log out (turn off find my iphone) to restore it and remove icloud lock...
Most banking apps require password or touchid/faceid to log in...

so they can play games, read your emails, call/text your friends, surf the internet until they accidentally stop long enough for the phone to lock?

It's called going into settings and turning off Auto-Lock.

now if apple would just create a password protected photo album for everyone to hide their **** picks...

Maybe you keep those kind of pics on your phone. Don't assume everyone, as that's kind of gross. Also, TMI and not really appropriate to be talking about here.

What about angle, has Apple commented on what the phones authentication angle/range etc are??

What if the robber takes 5000 children hostage and threatens to kill them one by one unless you unlock it with your face?

OK, let the children die... but what if Mystique takes your phone?

Six digit passcode you say? What if that guy is freakin' psychic?

It's a convenience. If you hold National Security secrets on your telephone, don't use faceid or touchid. Use a complex password only. Also, don't put servers in mom 'n pop stores either. That's not a good idea.

Seriously, I laugh when people throw out dramatic scenarios about the legitimacy of this. IF A COP POINTS IT AT ME AN RUNS AWAYY, WHAT DO YOU DO THEN HUH? GOTCHYA!!1

I mean, use a complex password if you are planning an attack or something. Otherwise if you want your cat/dick pics to stay safe, you are good with touch/face id.

I don't know if it is possible, or it is a good idea, but if apple make this Face Id detect once again, over and over again to make sure it is you using your phone? I Think it would be a good idea, no? Maybe it will use more battery, but user can Set up this if need more Secure phone.

I was being sarcastic... I'm a girl and I don't take those kind of pics, but people seem to be worried about it so I suggested a solution to their problem :p

I agree with all of that except the middle bit, but in my neck of the woods carrying a firearm for self protection is no big deal. People are less likely to rob one another when they know the victim might put a couple holes through them.

Yep. It's basically illegal here to publicly carry any kind of weapons you could use to harm someone. I know people who in spite of that sometimes carry knives, batons, pepper spray and such things, but judging by their stories it's not worth it. Even in self defence situations you will pretty easily be slapped with at least probation (?), likely a jail sentence if you end up using the weapon on the assailant and anything real comes out of it. Even in self defence. That's why I try to talk my way out of threatening situations, at least as far as I can.

But this has less and less to do with the topic at hand, so have a good one and stay safe!

Great to hear, looking forward to Face ID. Another feature the competition will rush to implement next year.

No, it doesn't.

Sorry my bad, I don't have the "never" option because I use an exchange email for my work, but my other points still stand :)

But now that you've mentioned that, maybe the passcode/ID section (which requires passcode) would be a better place for the autolock settings than in the display section.

You obviously didn't read what was written. If you feel you need security then you shouldn't use Touch ID or Face ID. You should have your phone set to password only and choose a secure passcode. Under current US law the court can require you to provide your fingerprint but cannot force you to divulge your password.
I'm less concerned about court orders than government agents who overstep their bounds in routine situations (not just the police, but also e.g. customs agents etc. because I travel a lot internationally). Physically forcing someone to provide a fingerprint is on a different level than merely holding a phone in front of their face. And BTW, the iPhone isn't just sold in the US.

So then it can easily be used while sleeping. It can easily be used by cops.

Face ID is more secure when sleeping than Touch ID i.e your gf can put your thumb on the sensor while you’re snoring to unlock the phone but she can’t open your eyes without waking you up. Cops on the other hand can unlock your phone by pointing it at your face and if you close your eyes you may not be aware what’s happening to you visually. It’s a dilemma for sure.

Maybe you can close one eye, then maybe the phone won't unlock and you can still see.

I am still not 100% convinced. Simple stuff like collegue's could unlock your phone by grabbing it and holding it at you. in the half second you realise what they try to do, its already unlocked probaly.

If they're holding your own phone at your face, it's pretty obvious what they're trying to do. If they're holding your phone at all without your permission ... I mean ... this really isn't complicated.

How do you grip the two buttons?

Which two buttons? Power and volume up or down? Isn’t power and volume up taking a screenshot? And lower and volume down a hard reset?

But by grabbing it back, you have to somewhat look at the phone, lol.

No sunglasses is quite a big one. Now i do have quite a few real use case in which i would truly miss TouchID (riding my scooter and stopping by to check maps / message & well...sunglasses....i spend summer vacations with sunglasses on)

You still have to remove your halmet if it’s blocking key face features in order to unlock the phone and you still have to swipe up to get to the home screen and then select the maps app.

Didn't you pay attention?? In order to be used, your eyes have to be open and paying attention. Two things that don't tend to happen while your asleep.
Now repeat back to me and I will make sure you understand!

Apple expects the consumer to remain calm and not look at the phone while it's being stolen. I hope I won't do it wrong.

Then go ahead and panic and get yourself shot or stab for hit or injured!
