Rather than adding a new kind of touchid I like to see an improved faceid that works over greater distance and from any angle. But maybe I'm missing something, what would touchid add that an improved faceid couldn't solve?

Of course Touch ID will always have a role - Face ID was a stopgap measure until Apple figured out how to get a fingerprint sensor to work under a display. Once that's done Apple will still keep Face ID around since it's a freebie feature from the depth cameras the phones will have to support their real purpose - AR functionality.

AR is just a side effect of Face ID, not the other way around.

Couldn’t agree more and the faceID isn’t the future if it occupies the screen real estate and iPhone X isn’t the real all-screen display that  offered in 2017, 2018, 2019

Majority of user felt the same sentiment about it as well.

Majority of users = a small, vocal minority on Macrumors forums.

Btw, Face ID is certainly the future and the main biometric unlock method. You can count on it.

Totally cannot wait. FaceID is much worse in almost every way than TouchID. TouchID is superior.
The only reason why FaceID exists is because they wanted bigger screen and no bezels but couldn't get the TouchID under the display to work in time.
Yeah sure, they just whipped up FaceID when they suddenly couldn’t get under-display TouchID to work.

And I suppose they just whipped up a time machine so they could go back three years to start work on the A11 with the 600 billion operations per second neural processor and five years for the ultra-miniaturized Kinect to make that work.

And the notch just appeared out of nowhere because FaceID right? So where were the other 5 sensors/transducers going to be located when the phone was supposedly going to have an under-display fingerprint reader?

Face ID is cool but I look like an absolute idiot when I try to unlock my phone when it's laying flat on my desk, or when leaning over contactless credit card machines in shops.
nobody normal use their iphone laying flat...everybody tooks their phone from table when they are using it

Face ID is quite a bit more practical than Touch ID and is not gimmicky at all. It is really, really good. A combination of both would certainly be nice, but calling Face ID gimmicky is just wrong.

FaceID makes more sense on the iPhone 8 that doesn’t have a weird looking. Unlike a cut out screen on the iPhone X.

TouchID + FaceID would be a great combo. Much better than any of them on their own.

Seems like Apple just "confirmed" that we will have TouchID back in the iPhone within the next couple years ;)

Yes, until that combo means you’ll have to touch your face to your display to get it to unlock.

Is it possible to use your hand as your face with Face ID? That is, can it become Palm Reader ID?

If you like it , I think you need to have more faceID sensor on it maybe 4 cut out screen from top, bottom, left, right.

When I upgrade my phone next I’d prefer touchid over faceid. Hopefully I’ll have the option to go flagship and not be forced to take faceid after my 8+. Typically I have my phone unlocked in my hand before I’m ever looking at it and when I need to approve Apple pay I’m not trying to need to see my face to approve the purchase of Orange tictacs.
