Apple's Greg Joswiak Says Touch ID Will 'Continue to Have a Role'

For those of us who work my hands are wet all the time. Either by sweat or water. My Touch ID fails multiple times a day because of this.

Modern ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanners read through sweat and dirt. They even work underwater.

Keep in mind Touch ID is technology from 2012.

Well the current Touch ID lacks that technology. And honestly I’d have to see it to believe it would work with sweaty or wet hands. Until then I am really looking forward to upgrading my 8 plus this year for the Face ID

Wow, I’m really surprised at all the negative comments about FaceID. Are these coming from actual iPhone X/XR/XS users? I doubt it.

I upgraded from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone X last year, it would be absurd to go back. When I have to hold my finger up to a fingerprint reader on my iPad it cracks me up, it’s like having to stick a key in a car door to unlock it or something. On my iPhone X it just passively authenticates me when I’m using the phone, I don’t have to take any action.

Of course Apple isn’t going to completely eliminate Touch ID overnight, it will be around for a while. Maybe they could add it to iPhones to work with FaceID for increased security. It’s much easier to fool than FaceID, so it would be weird to weaken iPhone security by allowing users to use it instead of FaceID.

This are my thoughts also. I still have my 9.7 Ipad Pro with Touch ID and every time I use the device it reminds me how much I appreciate Face ID now on my iPhone and Ipad.

In what parallel universe are you living, sir? In mine it is exactly the opposite.

It's almost like different people have different preferences and use cases and TouchID works better for some while FaceID works better for others. I would be very happy to see TouchID make a return and prefer it. My mom, FaceID works way better for her. A phone with both = win.

Blind trust and believing 'What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone' is for fools.
Yeah, but what’s the difference with Touch ID? If it doesn’t stay on your phone and some government and aliens are collecting your data then how Touch ID is ‘better for privacy, security and convenience’ but Face ID is ‘better for police state tracking’? Both can be used for good and bad.

Totally cannot wait. FaceID is much worse in almost every way than TouchID. TouchID is superior.

Totally disagree, FaceID work great all the time (except when I have my helmet on!!). If you use ApplePay with the Apple card you will see why.

Police can open your phone by pointing it at your face whereas they would need a warrant to use your fingerprint.
It’s the issue of some particular countries and its laws, not Face ID.

And if your voice becomes distorted due to a cold or changes due to other conditions, or the surrounding environment you're in, is to loud to recognize the users voice, then What? Resort to a alpha-numeric passcode every time? :D To many uncertain variables for ‘Voice ID’ to be successful.
And if your fingers get wet or dirty or you use gloves due to cold weather then what? Resort to a alpha-numeric passcode every time? :D Too many uncertain variables for ‘Touch ID’ to be successful.

You know, my experience is the exact opposite. This is why when people start swearing they want TouchID back at the cost of FaceID it worries me. I have a much better experience with FaceID. I hope if they do bring TouchID back it is both, not just one or the other because I'll personally pick FaceID every time.

I'm on an 8+ - TouchID rarely fails for me. FaceID on my iPad Pro seems extra fussy when I'm making Apple Pay transactions and needs to be at a very precise angle. It's also slow as hell most of the time. I'd welcome _both_ in the same device.

And if your fingers get wet or dirty or you use gloves due to cold weather then what?.

Too many uncertain variables for ‘Touch ID’ to be successful.

Kinda of a nonsensical response on your behalf, being Touch ID was [And Still is] successful. You can project all you want about something that’s never come to fruition with ‘Voice ID’ , Touch ID was the standard for years for biometric security. Touch ID hasn’t proven unreliable at all, is it perfect?. No, but neither is Face ID. Using any type of voice recognition, there’s far too many variables that would be affecting something of that nature versus something touch ID with a fingerprint. Not everybody lives in a cold climate for one, but _everybody_ has the opportunity where they can lose their voice and/or where the environment could be proven to be too loud with ambient noise from being in the car/in public to make it reliable, etc, where it’s to inconsistent. Your ‘Voice Idea’, is well, not relevant to Touch ID in the slightest. But I’ll let it slide. :D

<snip>
Don’t be surprised. It’s not hard to find a couple dozen people complaining here in the forums about _anything_ Apple does.

They could knock the price of the XS down to $499 and guaranteed some in the Apple-hate crowd would still complain that it wasn’t $299 or 399

I’m very pleased to hear Apple isn’t planning on discarding Touch ID, and this gives even further credence to the rumors of Touch ID returning to the iphone in some form. I wonder how those who insisted Touch ID is dead are reacting.

Face ID is quite a bit more practical than Touch ID and is not gimmicky at all. It is really, really good. A combination of both would certainly be nice, but calling Face ID gimmicky is just wrong.
Disagree. Face ID doesn't live up to its name. It is a very limited in identifying your face. It fails when the angle isn't right. It fails if there is any obstruction in front of your face.

Well, uhh, you might want to try moving the ‘obstruction’ in order for the dot projector to accurately read the users face. That seems fairly rudimentary. :D
If someone is resting their face on their hand, can you still identify them?

It should just work. If you are having to worry about dot projections, then it sounds an awful lot like "You're holding it wrong."

This is absolutely hilarious. Yes, FaceID must see your face to work. What’s the problem? You expect it to reliably distinguish you from other people even if you have a mask on?

The only reason why FaceID exists is because they wanted bigger screen and no bezels but couldn't get the TouchID under the display to work in time.
Totally agree. iPhone will continue to lose ground against other phones until they get Touch ID back. I won’t ever be buying into “the notch”.

At least China doesn’t have this mess murder like United States does and you can actually walking on the street after midnight without worrying being robbed by someone is awesome. I take this than anything else. I actually feel safe when I was in China, last year. I don’t feel safe at all when I am walking at Downtown Toronto after midnight.

Not sure if you are serious but I agree that the notch is terrible compared to what is coming out now.

What the Face ID defenders around here have to understand is there are people who just do not want a camera always scanning their faces. Touch ID maintained an adequate degree of personal privacy while being quick and secure. Yes, both Touch ID and Face ID have certain drawbacks based on use cases. But to listen to some of the whiteknights around here, you'd think Face ID is mana from heaven, which it certainly isn't.

I personally think Apple has been surprised by the number of people who haven't upgraded because of a lack of Touch ID or home button, and the 2020 rumors and official statements are beginning to show that. I have friends who don't want to give up their home button. I have family members who use the XR but use a passcode instead of Face ID. Which is completely, utterly stupid that people even have to make that choice, since there was Touch ID for many years.

When an Apple Store sales person asks me if I've checked out the newer phones and I tell them yes but I like my Touch ID / home button, and their reply is "Yeah we get that a lot," you know it's an issue.

Weil said.

I also politely pushed back when the rep helping me tried to get me to trade in my 7+ for an X phone. I said "I am not interested in Face ID, learning new gestures, and paying more for a phone."

So, FaceID lovers: consider this use case. With the new phones and pass through charging AND the camera hump that will both have people placing their phone face down; you'll have to pick up the phone to unlock with your face. So much for 'faster, easier'. Now you're back to 'more secure' which those of us who still prefer TouchID - and major banks around the globe - were ok with.

I wouldn’t read too much about the iPhone into what Joswiak said, he mentioned iPad twice and iPhone not at all:

When asked if Face ID would feature on more products, Joswiak told us: "Certainly, we'll continue to put it on more devices but also Touch ID will continue to have a role - it's a great technology on our iPad lineup and we don't see it going away anytime soon."

and
"It's a solution that remains and we still use it on our iPads, iPod Touch and even the Macs - it's a great system.”

There is some hope for the new “SE” because FaceID is expensive, but nothing in this article changes that, that’s been true all along. I expect it to have the original TouchID since that would be the least expensive solution. I’m not sure about the whole under-screen rumor, but who knows.

I saw some post about iOS 13 removing 3D Touch. If they did that it would be like Apple telling iPhone SE users iOS 13 will disable the headphone jack and you must use a lightning headphones or telling all devices that have Touch ID that it will be disabled in iOS 13 and you have to use other means for authentication.
