What the Face ID defenders around here have to understand is there are people who just do not want a camera always scanning their faces. Touch ID maintained an adequate degree of personal privacy while being quick and secure. Yes, both Touch ID and Face ID have certain drawbacks based on use cases. But to listen to some of the whiteknights around here, you'd think Face ID is mana from heaven, which it certainly isn't.
I personally think Apple has been surprised by the number of people who haven't upgraded because of a lack of Touch ID or home button, and the 2020 rumors and official statements are beginning to show that. I have friends who don't want to give up their home button. I have family members who use the XR but use a passcode instead of Face ID. Which is completely, utterly stupid that people even have to make that choice, since there was Touch ID for many years.
When an Apple Store sales person asks me if I've checked out the newer phones and I tell them yes but I like my Touch ID / home button, and their reply is "Yeah we get that a lot," you know it's an issue.
