Read the article. AirPods are the best selling Apple product at Best Buy. The world is going wireless. People don't care as much as people in this echo chamber seem to think. Bluetooth is basically standard in cars these days or there is a USB input. Audio technicians are a subset of a subset. Apple isn't catering to the needs of audio technicians. Also dont forget iPhones include a pair of wired headphones AND an adapter for use with any other pair of headphones.

It would be if everyone was using a superior Bluetooth standard but they’re not. The lag on my 2017 mazda 3 Bluetooth is horrendous. You know what doesn’t have any lag? The aux port.

If this news helps those people who thought "yeah, I still need a headphone jack, but at least Apple includes a dongle" put things in proper perspective, then it's worth it.

If they don't mind having to buy dongles to replace broken or lost ones, then rock on. But if it is a significant irritation, then they've learned how important that jack really is for them.

Rehashing Apple's decision to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack is pointless. Apple is not going to bring it back.

I will still need a headphone jack on my phone for the foreseeable future so it looks like my iPhone SE will be my last iPhone. I'm disappointed by that because the SE is a great value, built like a tank, highly reliable, and continues to perform just as well as the first day I bought it.

My Ford supports Bluetooth, but only for call audio. The original owner didn’t select the option that would’ve enabled media audio as well, so for now I’m using AirPods and other Bluetooth accessories elsewhere, but I need aux in my car. I’m not going to get a new car just because Apple decides to mess with standard connecticity.

When your best selling product is something that's needed to restore basic functionality to another product then you've lost your way in form over function.

I also find that these lightning adapters wear out really fast. I've gone through three sets of the lightning earpods. The control stopped working. But I can still listen to music.

I solved the problem by switching to Android.:)

The Lightning connector with multiple gold flashed copper fingers is not designed for the continual tugging when used with headphones. Normal life will be based on a static use. Headphone jacks are ideal for this scenario.

People are paying money and struggling because they are ignorant
I was quipping in the wider context of Apple replacing standard / common ports with proprietary / uncommon ones (headphone jack, but also USB-C debacle on MBPs - see my previous posts on the issue.).

NB FWIW I use a pre-2015 MBP, MBA, iPhone SE, Android and a few head-less AMD BSD boxes, so not in any particular camp.

Also indicates that Apple is making a lot more money after removing the jack from the phone. The removal of ports from their laptops is not a coincidence. This decisions are mainly about profits.

It's primarily about waterproofing the iPhone. That headset port gets in the way to accomplish it. The audio port is long and it wiggles, which causes more movement inside that can losen up the water seal.

The Lightning port is reinforced by design, so it's a lot stronger and also short. There's a lot less room for wiggling.

It's not like Apple is holding your headset hostage. They provide an adapter for free. If you lose it, well.. you gotta but another one.

Apple removes functionality from a phone that people want and use. They dis-integrate functions and expect you to pay for it. My iPhone 6S work with WIrELESS AIRPODS AND EarPods just fine! So why REMOVE a useful feature? You STILL have a hole in the bottom, You still have the same thickness....you have enhanced NOTHING except your ego (courageous decision) and you have made sure I have one less reason to "upgrade" and pay you more money. That guy who keeps buying Apple stock....call me in a year LOL. Apple has become a gigantic and overblown company w/o innovation and a tiny product mix (for it's size).

Let’s try to meet a mid-way here. Apple did not remove any functionality from a phone. You can still listen to music right out of the box with any iPhone bought, each one of them coming with Apple earbuds included, be it with a 3,5 mm audio jack or lightning. Any iPhone sold starting from iPhone 7 also includes a free adapter for customers preferring a wired setup, along with inbuilt stereo speakers. Should you lose/damage the adapter, the replacement one is 9$. I suppose that someone using an iPhone (not the cheapest of them all) can afford it. This makes me believe it is not such a big deal.

Somehow Samsung has managed to keep the headphone jack and even have a slightly better water resistance rating on their flagships.

The physical size of the phone (Samsungs tend to be bigger), as well as the extra price component (keeping the audio jack in and waterproofing it costs more) might have something to do with it.

Of course people need it. That’s why the adapter is included in the box Lol. What people are buying are replacements, which is their fault at the end of the day. I know SEVERAL people who lose the adapter and AirPods regularly because they’re so small.

There are far more reasons to get a new one than just losing it. We can only speculate what the majority of people do. Many people actually own a good set of headphones or have use cases where the jack comes in handy. Couple more have been mentioned in the comments.

I haven't used my adapters ever since I got my AirPods.

I leave my audiophile headphones at home as they are connected to an AMP into the desktop computer. At work and at the gym or wherever I am I just pair with the AirPods

1 for $9.99? yikes. I got 2 in a package for $8.99 on eBay and they're official Apple OEM. 1 stays in the car permanently, the other permanently on my headphones.

I still can't believe that people are claiming Apple didn't remove any functionality from the iPhone.

Apple DID remove functionality from the phone... The headphone jack is now OUTSIDE the phone in a separate adaptor. It is no longer part of the phone, therefore functionality was removed.

In the same way that the new MacBook Pro's no longer include the SD card slot, therefore functionality was removed.

No. That can’t be possible. Tim Cook told us it was a 50 year old port! Nobody uses it!!! Lies!!! Lies!!!! Liesssss!!!!!

Well, I have iPhone SE, which still has headphone port, but I own decent wireless headphones thanks to Apple's decision to drop the port from it's flagship phones, and I'm very happy with them. My headphones would not exist if Apple wouldn't went that road. They pushed wireless industry forward.

Are you saying wireless headphones didn't exist before airpods or that the quality of pre-Airpod wireless headphones were lacking? (FYI it's a trick question because both options are incorrect).

Also please give me an example, concrete evidence of how Apple dropping the headphone jack solely pushed the industry forward and would have otherwise not occured if not for Apple. That's an open question for everyone else spouting this nonsense without proof, enough with the non-specific statements and let's get scientific please.

Keeping my older Mac technology WITH ports....NOTHING was gained by deleting the 3.5mm port....already had the capability to go wireless, just lost the capability if I wasted money on a lesser newer phone.

Even though Apple includes them with the iPhones, I'm still impressed that AirPods, a $159 wireless headphone product, outsells the cheap headphone adapter.

You mean except everything that was gained?

Getting rid of the headphone jack was stupid and always will be stupid and this is coming from a heavy AirPods user. Their claims of needing space ring hollow and the reality is they didn’t replace it with something superior in all ways the way past harsh transitions took place USB and CD-Rom come to mind.
[doublepost=1530125357][/doublepost]

They didn’t explicitly show space saving and water resistance required it, but whatever.

They did it because they had no other real innovation-so they created some BS 'innovation'. It's really stupid.
