I can give you one reason right here and now.

Airpods have made me largely indifferent to the absence of a headphone jack on my iPhone. And if the removal of the jack can incentivise headphone companies to channel more resources towards making better wireless headphones, all the better (for me), because I am gaining in an area which is relevant to me, while losing in an area which doesn’t really affect me.

It’s not entirely true to say the headphone jack doesn’t affect me as an Airpods user, especially if the opportunity cost is in companies not channeling as much resources into wireless headphones as they could due to them also working on wired headphones.

Does that make me selfish? Perhaps, but I don’t make the rules. Apple does, and I simply play by them the best I can, and it just so happens that the way Apple currently does things.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

My experience is the polar opposite of yours. And your point is moot. I think you are looking at the situation somewhat strangely. Companies are channeling more money into it because of profit margins in that business. Not because apple got rid of the jack. BT headphones are a ripoff. The price to performance ratio is awful. Convenience is good, yes. But at the cost of better sound. It's not like apple opened up a new era or something. The phone HAD Bluetooth before. (I see people on here act as if they could never use BT headphones unless the jack was gone) Although Air pods are great for you, I don't think they sound good. I have some beats X which sound better than Airpods and i don't like using them. I always prefer wired in my car or anytime its not a hindrance depending on activity.

And don't be fooled into thinking apple did you a favor. They only were looking out for themselves. Greedy AF with their acquisition of Beats and the upcoming release of their Air pods. You, like many other lemmings fell right into the trap they set by ditching the headphone jack. That is the real reason they did it, which you will never find written anywhere. They are not stupid when it comes to you spending more money on their products. It's all calculated well in advance.

If Apple made cars some people would be defending this too.

[Sarcasm: On] No, but you don't understand Apple (the trillion dollar company) has limited resources and needed to remove the headphone jack in order to focus manpower on iOS 12 - oh, hold on, iOS12 is only a stop-gap release in order to buy time for long overdue new features & to address bugs/features that should have been addressed long ago... Okay, in that case, they needed to remove the headphone jack so as to focus on new Mac hardware - oh wait... Okay, to focus on a new amazing and technologically unrivaled keyboard design that isn't rendered useless by a fleck of dust - oh wait..... Okay, to focus on the timely release a one-of-a-kind charging mat - oh wait..... Okay, to focus on.... on.... on..... Mojave Dark Mode! Yes, yes, I'll go with that, Mojave Dark Mode... hmmm, what's that you tell me? Dark mode has been available on every other OS since the turn of the century? But... but.... headphone jack.... courage..... innovate. [Sarcasm: Off]

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. The headphone jack will live on for years after the lighting connector is dead and buried.
My guess is Apple wants a no-jack phone and they had to kill it at some point. There are rumors the 2019 iPhones won’t have a Lightning port either.

Well, if they really end up dropping all the ports, I won't be buying another iPhone. The iPhone itself costs enough, let alone a new car. I intend to drive my current car way beyond 2019, and podcasts from my phone are essential to my commute.

What, so every other audio product in the world has a lightning connector?
Lmao

If Apple really wants to push Air Pods, I think they should offer an adapter for those. Don't give me a Lightning -> 3.5 mm adapter. Give me an Airpod -> 3.5 mm adapter.

I regularly use my headphones with non-Apple products, and 3.5 mm is the standard that everyone (except Apple) supports.

I think I'd happily pay $30 for such an adapter. Even better would be if it was just in the box with the AirPods, though.

I use my AirPods with my Google Pixel 2 all the time no porblem. The AirPods use Bluetooth and pretty much every phone now has that.

Oh and for all the people complaining about Apple getting rid of the headphone jack makes me laugh. You should see the mess that type c is on all the Android phones that yes have also gotten rid of the headphone jack.

When your best selling product is something that's needed to restore basic functionality to another product then you've lost your way in form over function.

The best selling apple product at Best Buy, AirpPods (had you read the article you'd have noticed this) are arguably more function over form as many have complained of their aesthetics yet praise their funcionality.

As for restoring basic functionality, the iPhones without headphone jacks ship with lightning EarPods which arguably provide "basic functionality" right out of the box.

I wish this dongle cable thinger thanger would come in different lengths and in fancy colors, then they would sell loads more! They should also make a wirelessversion.

Sorry if a dupe: not going to wallow through six more pages of "If only Steve were around", "Jony and his aesthetics", "penny pinching Apple", "just get Airpods".

I sense the sarcasm, but, we are starting to see 3rd party MFi dongles for 3.5mm jack. And comes in black. But more expensive than Apple's.

My surprise is that I've bought only 2 of these for my daughter's iPhones.

When iPhone X+1 comes out with the USB-C that will open up a new front in Revenge of the Dongles.

Seriously, I gave up whining and instead bought Apple stock. Too many idiots like me just keep buying this stuff.

Don't give in to the Corporate Machine claiming we need smaller better ports for our electronics!!!! Or switch to wireless god forbid (gov't mind control). I only buy printers with LPT ports and my mouse is PS/1 all the way!!!! I'll never jump in on that USB bandwagon. My laptop may be 18 years old but I never had to buy a new mouse or printer like the rest of you chumps!!!!

I can't believe people actually wanna stay with that 1910 technology LOL

I think you’re confusing want and practical necessity. I’m all in on Bluetooth headphones, but I also want to listen to podcasts and music from my phone when I drive, and my 2011 Ford has Bluetooth for call audio only. Media audio relies on the aux jack and unfortunately I’m not rich or stupid enough to ditch an otherwise perfectly functional car just because my phone vendor decided to have a courageous moment.

There is no type C mess. If you think there is, please explain.

Slightly, it's not much.

Regardless, the headphone jack is not coming back.

Ahhh no, not regardless. You implied that the headphone jack impeded water resistance and then got called out for talking BS. You don't get to dismiss it simply because you were wrong.

We may never get the headphone jack back but I want you to know that at least I'll always have this moment, of you getting put in your place and I will cherish it forever. You know why? Because it symbolises the fact that people who spout nonsense and falsehoods will actually get called out & held accountable for their misinformation.

I
I solved the problem by switching to Android.:)
If killing off the headphone jack was a test to check people's readyness to switch to android, that test must be considered a great success - that only Apple can accomplish

There are far more reasons to get a new one than just losing it. We can only speculate what the majority of people do. Many people actually own a good set of headphones or have use cases where the jack comes in handy. Couple more have been mentioned in the comments.

But what I’m saying is that every iPhone 7, 7P, 8, 8P and X come with an adapter. Why would someone need a SECOND adapter? The only reason would be that they lost it or that they want an extra for their home and/or office.

My point is that you already get one, so there are very few reasons to buy a second, third, fourth etc.

The headphone jack is not going anywhere in the audiophile segment, where you use really good equipment, amps, etc for listening to stuff. However, it is going to disappear in the "most people don't care" segment of the market, and smartphones fall into that category. And there it's already becoming a thing of the past.

I find this analogous to the fate of the non-DSLR cameras. Of course, DSLR and high-end prosumer cameras will be here for years to come, but when it comes to less expensive cameras, for most people, the smartphone is 'good enough' while it is much more convenient.

This is why BT is the future for phones. Not because there are no benefits to the headphone jack, but because most people will soon go wireless for their phones. It will happen as soon as the price to manufacture BT headphones drops enough so that phone manufacturers can bundle them with phones.

Of course, Sennheiser and BeyerDynamic and others will continue to make those thick-cabled expensive headphones meant for much better audio sources than streamed music on phones. Most people will always choose convenience over quality and only some people will choose quality over convenience. The market will bifurcate accordingly, with phones going jackless and most headphones going wireless while pro audio equipment will keep the wires and jacks.

Getting angry at this is equivalent to yelling at rain.

Having better audio quality over Apple poop quality Bluetooth is considered stuck in the past? Did you even think your statement over before spewing that out?

Apple "poop quality Bluetooth" is good enough - even great - for the majority of people, and convenience trumps everything in that segment. That's why the jack is the past on smartphones, but not elsewhere. And Apple arguably made the most convenient headphones on the market that sound good enough for most people.

An honest question: if you like listening to high quality audio on wired headphones, do you really use a smartphone? I'm no expert, but I'd say that the benefits of wired headphones are mostly negated by phone's audio capabilities anyway.

He’s not entirely wrong.

Hypothetically speaking, Apple could very well have made a waterproof iPhone that still kept the headphone jack were they willing to invest enough resources into doing so. It is possible that Apple instead decided to drop the jack to make the waterproofing process easier and cheaper. So yes, the headphone jack did impede Apple’s ability to waterproof their phone in this context. That it could theoretically be worked around does not negate this possibility.

Second, the Samsung galaxy phone is designed quite differently from the iPhone. Whatever method Samsung used to waterproof their phones might not be readily replicated in the iPhones, due to the designs which Apple has opted to make. We can’t just assume that because company A was able to do X, that means that Apple has to be capable of doing so as well.

Quite a few variables to consider, IMO.

I am with Apple on this one and think it is blown out of proportion. For people still liking wired solutions, there IS an adapter that is included for free with any iPhone not having a headphone jack. If one loses/breakes it, the new one is easy to get. Klipsch that are mentioned in the article, by the way, offer quite a few wireless sets by now, so do all the other major makers. Time to move on, imho.
