But but but... you just talked about extortionate rates!

And people have been railing against these rates in every one of these articles!

;)
Touché, time to go to bed.

All in all, as a consumer it is good news.

As an investor, let's just say that my mental gymnastics just got a bit harder.

"Good for the Consumer" usually means prices will be reduced.

And yet... apps can already be had for $1 or free.

So I don't see the consumer benefiting much from all this.

What worthwhile (non state/ngo sponsored) app only cost you $1 I ask.

I'm just saying... apps can be had for $1 or free. They can't get much lower that that!

App prices are low today compared to paying $50 for a notepad app for a Handspring Visor.

Lemme ask you this: if developers have lower commission fees... will they lower their app prices? For the consumer?

Or will they just pocket the difference?

;)

Alright... so what should the rates be?

If 30% is too high for large developers... and 15% is still too high for small developers... what is the proper number?

Should the commission fee just be 12% like Epic charges developers in its store? Would that fix it?

Or if Apple changed their rate to 10% would all these various nations drop their anti-trust investigations and lawsuits? Is it just that simple?

:p
Sideloading incl. third-party AppStore and Apple can keep 30% of commission fee for stuff bought from their AppStore. Case closed, easy peasy.

I'm not an economist.

But if the analogy with tax rate cuts holds, we're fudged.

I like it!

Until the scammers buy fake ads on websites to redirect consumers to lookalike websites where they download malicious *.ipa files.

And the scam websites do god-knows-what with your credit card info!

This is easily fixed by making sideloading an opt-in setting with scary warning messages before you can turn it on. Simply downloading a file is useless without first enabling it.

I mean, at this point the idea of a nation-state specific App store does not even look that bad.

Let local regulation run it's course.

Wait... isn't Epic suing Google for doing exactly that? Making it scary to sideload? Even though it's allowed?

God this will never end...

In related news from Japanese site Nikkei, Japan's Fair Trade Commission is launching an investigation into whether Apple and Google are leveraging their dominance in the smartphone OS market to eliminate competition and limit options for consumers.

The Japanese FTC will conduct interviews and surveys with OS operators, app developers, and smartphone users, and will aim to create a report outlining OS market structure and the reasons why competition "has remained static."

I'll put my money on this one having the first & maybe BIGGEST impact !

The pendulum had swung far too far in Apple's favor, for far too long.

Now, Apple is about to get their butts kicked, ALL over the map !

If Tim Cook was a smart man, & that's a BIG if, he would head ALL this off at the pass.

Specifically, Apple should announce today (OR soon) that they will be reducing their cut to 7.5% Across the Board, for ALL transactions, starting Nov 1st.

If they were to do that, they would maintain Control.

And for those of you don't know, Tim Cook is a Control Freak.

He may have gotten that trait / attribute from Steve Jobs.

Regardless, I see Cook wanting to maintain Control as a Top Priority.

More so than giving-in to a reduced Apple cut.

As such, I fully expect Apple to make the 7.5% Announcement, sooner, rather than later.

The writing is on the wall.

Either they give-in now, OR lose it ALL !

Apple simply has few fans in the App Development community !

ONLY those companies & App Developers for who Apple "Played Favorites" are fans of the status quo.

App Developers know precisely who they are in their Primary Category !

Most others do NOT.

As a side note, to me, Tim Cook appears to be aging really fast right now.

What I'm suggesting Apple do, will certainly slow his aging.

Cook & Apple should compromise now, & get it over with !

I think this is why Apple is moving into services. They see that governments won't let them have a monopoly on in-app payments and maybe even app distribution soon so they are actually starting to innovate and more product offerings.

It's even easier to fix by not allowing sideloading.

On one hand I do think Apple deserves some commission for app purchases. But on the other hand I thought that's what the $99 and $299 yearly developer fees were all about.

Don't be surprised if those prices go up after App Store changes go into effect.

What if they charged App Developers $100 USD per year for each app (to be in their App Store) ?

I heard that one floated multiple times when I was up in Silicon Valley earlier this month.

It has a side-benefit of forcing App Developers to prioritize their apps, which should theoretically greatly reduce the number of crap apps in the App Store !

...and THAT would be a true additional win for consumers.
There is so much total hot garbage in the App Store.

I literally laugh out loud when Apple talks about it as some bastion of quality software.

It is loaded with scams and garbage

Did you hear that vintage distributors asked for a 40-60% cut? 30 sounds like a steal !!

Uh yeah... they did.

That's why 30% was so amazing!

Developers got to keep 70% of the sticker price... and they didn't have to deal with CDs or floppy disks... or sending physical goods to stores... or any of that crap.

The App Store was indeed a breakthrough.

And just wait until anyone can put any ol' crap on a website and sell it!

Innovating is exactly what would be healthy for Apple and their consumers, rather than trying to lock competitors out to maintain their revenue stream. If Apple's innovation means that their services truly are a cut above everyone else's, then people will be willing to pay for them, even if it costs a little more. Instead, Apple wants to take the easy route, which is only afforded to them because they control (or at least try to control) absolutely everything related to their phones.
