And you probably think that you added a lot to this discussion, right? I was discussing Apple pricing (which you think is off topic) and you want to discuss me (which you think is very relevant). Would you stay on the topic, please?

That would be great if they did not charge so much. How about they sell me the battery for $15 (which is a reasonable price) and I take care of recycling? All they want is your money. Greedy bustards.

Your logic on pricing of a replacement battery from any electronics manufacturer just proves my point.

*Super long rant about just some of the things wrong with the iPad*

I couldn't agree more with you, sir. I'm a young, aspiring digital artist who was really excited to hear about the iPad upon first hearing about it, but I've decided to wait until gen 2 or 3, or even longer if it takes that long to add the features I want.

On a side note: What is the target audience for the Macbook Air anyway? It's more expensive and less functional than a regular Macbook, which is highly oxymoronic to anyone other than someone who is obsessed with extreme mobility.

I guess it could go like this:

Students and regular users: Macbook
Professionals and extreme computer users: Macbook Pro
A traveler who needs a computer but not a lot of power or functionality: Macbook Air??

Frankly, if they had done the iPad based on Snow Leopard instead of the iPhone OS, it could have been a much better version of what the MBA is, which, I guess makes sense that Apple wouldn't want to make its own product (the MBA) obsolete. That doesn't change the fact that it's annoying as hell.

fail. this shows they are expecting problems. not to mention if the battery is dead how the hell am i going to sync it?

Holy crap, you know about batteries that never lose their charge?!!?!!

But seriously, its another way to milk the cow, I doubt you would get a brand new iPad.

You are missing the point. Intel's warranty [example] is there simply because Intel makes quality products, so it can give consumers and companies a longer warranty period; one that goes beyond the usual limited one year period. No risk for Intel. No risk for Apple.

The risk for Apple is increased hardware costs if they are going to pay for a retail-level parts warranty from Intel, something that no other major computer manufacturer does.

Of course the reality of the situation is that we have no idea what sort of deal Apple and Intel have worked out regarding component failures. Presumably the component failure rate is built into the price that Apple pays for the chips (i.e. more failures = cheaper). The length of the warranty that Intel will give you for buying a component off the shelf (at a price that is probably waaay more than Apple pays) has nothing to do with the warranty that Apple offers on their computers. Obviously everyone would like a longer warranty, but your logic about the relationship between the warranty you get directly from Intel and one from Apple is faulty.

... it would have been priced like their notebook line and had even less sales. There is no perfect Apple product.

Ya think so? I mean, looking at the hardware, I think that the 16GB and even 32GB models (wi-fi only) would still be cheaper than the standard Macbook (not considering student or other discounts). But hey, what do I know? If I'm wrong, don't be too brutal on me!

That's nice. I am still scratching my head to try to understand why you don't understand the difference between a psu and a battery. Please name another consumer electronics vendor who replaces batteries free for three full years.
Sorry. I can't name any company who does, simply because I only buy Apple hardware. Probably because Apple is different.

Wait! What's the name of the cell phone company, the one making these [virtually] indestructible cell phones, who will replace every broken cell phone, for free, simply because they come with a lifetime warranty. Here you have it. The Sonim

Seriously, why do people insist on getting worked up because Apple gives them an OPTION to get a complete refurb for $99 if the battery dies?

Why can apple not just take back your iPad, open it up, replace the battery and return it? It is not like it is the first time they would have opened it up.

Why is this a big ask? Why should I accept a refurb? Why can I not keep the model I purchased?

If you take your car into get serviced and the dealer cannot be bothered to repair it, but just says take “the one outside instead it is the same type and colour and I just rebuilt it. Oh, but I cannot tell where I sourced it from or who owned it before you, or the mileage.” Would you blindly accept this?

No.

Why?

You know why…….

fail. this shows they are expecting problems. not to mention if the battery is dead how the hell am i going to sync it?

You should have been doing that all along. I sync my iPhone daily.

"You expect everyone to sync their iPad daily?!?"

Absolutely. Hardcore. ;) lol

The fact that the customer has to first sync the iPad to iTunes running on another computer, excludes the iPad from being a primary device. Many people had speculated that was a good possibility for those not interesting is a desk top or laptop.

Turn in my ipad for battery issues and get a new / refurbished one?! Have my first machine with all my personal info on it floating around for who knows how long?

delete the info on your device before sending it in.

There's no Office?

thank heavens for that. have not needed to use office for 5 years. good riddance.

How the heck do you print when there is no usb?

what do you need usb for? we have not used usb to print for ages. 17 office computers and visitors with laptops all print over our WLAN. just connect the printer to the router

2 - It's not compatible with Adobe CS?

why would it be? i would hope that this device will get developers thinking about how we can get the same work done on a multi-touch device by creating new applications and new solutions to more intuitive modes of working. looking to the future make more sense to me rather than being disappointed that apple did not design a device which caters to adobe's way of doing things. your disappointment is like being disappointed that smartphones don't have a slot for answering machine micro-tapes. btw: i use PS and afterFX every day, but am looking forward to a future when we get the same work done without mouse and keyboard. will take a few years for ipads to have that kind of power, but it's a start.

So my question is, what is this?

it's a device for consuming content. it's not made for so-called pro-users. it's made for digital-lifestyle-consumers. your complaints are akin to complaining that ipods don't run LogicPro

The problem is, it's the creatives, the professionals first and foremost who wait for this stuff. I feel they should be catered to first and then create a version that everyone can use just so they can have some nifty little device that doesn't take up room and can handle all their basic computing needs on the go.

well, with this delusional attitude your disappointment is pre-programmed. i don't recall any law that says that "the creatives, the professionals" are first in line. we are not a priori more important than other humans, and we don't fill apple's coffers as fully as "everyone"

The Sonim XP3 costs anywhere between $399-$499. As well, it is only a phone, it does not perform at any level near the iPad.

...it's also ugly as sin... and appears bulky... just stating...

What a stupid excuse.

How so? Please explain why my opinion is "stupid". As well, I find those who complain about a lack of secure data erasing on iPhone's and the iPad to be nitpicking rather than clearly thinking through the issue. I've worked behind the bar at Apple, and with the average volume of work, generally most Apple locations are too busy to replace a delicate battery in an iPhone or soon to be released iPad let alone care about the data it may contain. Generally, a consumer who utilizes their mobile device enough to warrant concern over data security knows better than to leave their data open for another individual to obtain. Further, I very well doubt Apple is waiting for iDevices in order to obtain your "data", it's a large company with more important concerns. Tin foils hats... hmmmmm ;)...

sounds like common sense.

in my experience the MBA is the device of choice for travelers who give presentations, lectures, pitches etc. and who are aware of the power of impressing their listeners/clients by having the most stylish/expensive device.

if you are showing possible future clients (in eg the advertising agency) your ideas for a campaign, it makes a difference if you turn up with an MBA or a clunky, 5-year-old-dell - even though both are equally capable of running the video clips to a video-projector. humans are easily impressed and rather dumb, but such is the game

Maybe for you privacy doesn't matter.
Maybe for you it is no problem, when your family fotos or E-Mails etc. are in the wrong hands.

I have nothing to hide. But my data is my data.

(so I also will not buy an iMac or a TimeCapsule without Swappable Hard Disk Drive. I also will not use mobileme without https in the Web-Apps - as a matter of principle)

Further, I very well doubt Apple is waiting for iDevices in order to obtain your "data", it's a large company with more important concerns.
Yes.
But trust is good, control is better.

(so I also will not buy an iMac or a TimeCapsule without Swappable Hard Disk Drive)

I agree with you there, although I do own a Time Capsule. It would be nice to swap the hard drive out myself without breaking the warranty, which I could do as I have done it numerous times, but I'm/we're not the average consumer.

Yes.
But trust is good, control is better.

Eh, I'm not concerned with my data. If Apple wants to look at my vacation photographs, or emails, they can knock themselves out. As a .Mac/MobileMe user, Apple has had access to my data for a long time. I doubt they're that interested ;).

I don't get what the big deal is. This is the same program they had with earlier iPod models and I'm sure it's the policy they still hold with newer iPods. It's nothing new.

In my personal experience, when my 5G Video iPod refused to charge, I called Apple, I sent in my iPod, got sent a shiny new one. Was it refurbished? Yes. Was it in perfect condition? Yes. I don't get where people have the misconception that "refurbished" means there's something wrong with it. Most of the time the casing is brand new, it's just the internal parts that have been recycled.

And Apple has some of the highest-quality refurbs around. I've purchased refurb units twice and never had a single issue with appearance, performance, anything.

I highly doubt Apple is going to send back "old, scuffed up" iPads out.

It's a ridiculous thing to have to send in your hardware to replace something as trivial as a battery.

It's a ridiculous thing for you to still be ragging on about this 2 years on, and still applying your own priorities to everyone else.

As a .Mac/MobileMe user, Apple has had access to my data for a long time. I doubt they're that interested ;).
I don't use mobileme.
I also doubt, that Apple is interested in my data.
But is this an excuse? No.

You also don't know what will happen with the iPad/Mac/TimeCapsule...

You never heard of people who buyed a used computer and recovered all data (because the owner didn't securely erase data) and made the data public?
Also If you have nothing to hide, I don't think it is nice that someone is checking your E-Mails, letters of application, curriculum vitae, Fotos, ... etc.

OK, it probably will not happen. But trust is good, control is better. ;)

Listen, be my guest and get the ipad. I have no problems with people who want it. I merely stated facts that contribute to why professionals are not going to want it. Don't be upset after you get your shiny glossy new toy for $500 and up and then realize after a couple of days that you can't really do anything with it and want to return it.
