I don't use mobileme.
I also doubt, that Apple is interested in my data.
But is this an excuse? No.

You also don't know what will happen with the iPad/Mac/TimeCapsule...

You never heard of people who buyed a used computer and recovered all data (because the owner didn't securely erase data) and made the data public?
Also If you have nothing to hide, I don't think it is nice that someone is checking your E-Mails, letters of application, curriculum vitae, Fotos, ... etc.

OK, it probably will not happen. But trust is good, control is better. ;)

As a victim of identity theft (don't get me started on the poor security of such companies as Sprint, who rarely check the backgrounds of prospect customers. Someone opened an account with my information through Sprint and received 10 disposable phones, most likely a drug dealer), I understand such concerns. This is why I don't leave any personal data that would give someone my address, social security number and any/all data necessary for someone to use.

Hmmm... so you send in your iPad, which has a great display, zero dead / frozen pixels and you receive one that has a one more more below the threshold that Apple deems 'defective' screen.
Or you can send in one that has one below the threshold that Apple deems defective and receive a great display with zero dead/frozen pixels.

i merely pointed out that the ipad is created for consuming (listening, watching and facebook, etc), not for creating (photography professionals or video designers).

Although iWork will be available for production purposes, you raise a very valid argument: the iPad seems mostly for consuming purposes through the iTunes store (the iPhone is an excellent example as Apple has celebrated the 10,000,000,000th iTunes purchase last month).

Listen, be my guest and get the ipad. I have no problems with people who want it. I merely stated facts that contribute to why professionals are not going to want it. Don't be upset after you get your shiny glossy new toy for $500 and up and then realize after a couple of days that you can't really do anything with it and want to return it.

that is a strange response. perhaps you did not read my words?
i have no intention of getting an ipad, it is of no use to me.

i merely pointed out that the ipad is created for consuming (listening, watching and facebook, etc), not for creating (photography professionals or video designers).

so why complain that a device that was not designed for your needs... does not cater to your needs????

your complaining is as pointless as audio professionals complaining they can't compose movie soundtracks on an ipod... the ipod was created for listening to music, not composing music -> ipad is for looking at photographs not colour-correcting photographs

i hope that has cleared up this misunderstanding?

Listen here dude. We are saying the same exact thing and you continue to say I am complaining. This is a forum, a forum is meant for discussion. Everything you have said in your previous post is exactly what I am saying. The device isn't geared towards professionals.

Privacy does not matter for consumers? I don't think so (e.g. emails, ... ).

Also this seperation in "Pro" and "Consumer" is "strange". There is no clear boundary.

God, I wish you fanboys would get your heads out of your...... *ahem*

When you get outside of fanboy vacuum and gain som clarity, you'll see:

It's a ridiculous thing to have to send in your hardware to replace something as trivial as a battery. Not to mention you have to pay $105.95 just for a new battery, and they don't even have the decency to do a simple memory transfer before sending it back to you! What a joke. Apple is a joke.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/191498/ipad_swapped_if_its_battery_fails_apple_says.html

I use to think a swappable battery would be better until i got my iPhone. My previous phone, a Treo, had a battery door that slowly loosened up over time, squeaked, and made the whole thing just feel kinda cheap. Not so with the iPhone...it feels just as solid today as it did when I bought it near 2 years ago. Not to mention the battery seems to last just as long too...hurray for quality batteries (another treo weak point).

I'm learning more toward the non-swappable battery side for certain devices and notebooks as well. I just hope that all these devices and batteries are properly disposed when sent back for a "new battery" or at end of life.

well...actually we are not saying the same thing, otherwise you would have no reason to sarcastically call me 'genius' or angrily ask "which rock i've been under", but it's all good. discussion can take many forms it seems. some friendly, some bitter.

and at least we can agree that we will both not be getting an ipad the first time around, though we are both delighted that it has been unleashed and we wish all owners of the 1st gen ipad a a wonderful experience consuming digital content, as we look forward to more powerful tools designed with our professional needs in mind. right? :)

enjoy the weekend!

Also this seperation in "Pro" and "Consumer" is "strange". There is no clear boundary.

The "Pro" user refers to individuals in the creative industry who have been die hard Apple owners/users for a long time. Apple's "Pro" lineup typically referred to the Power Mac's and Cinema Displays (which have not been revamped since 2003, aside from the 24" LED LCD that is designed with notebooks in mind). The Apple Cinema Display was a good buy for pro-sumers as the pricing for a then new 23" and 30" IPS CCFL LCD panel was quite good in comparison to Eizo monitors, which are one of a few design standard monitors. The higher end MacBook Pros (with dual discrete video) and Mac Pro's are now considered part of the "Pro" lineup intended for video and photography professionals who need the power for high definition editing (although the lack of newer monitors with available anti-glare screens is one of the reasons those in the professional design industry are disappointed with Apple's lack of focus on their higher end electronics line).

Visit B&H Photo Video, a NYC based electronics company that many in the photography, video and design business frequent (and not just because professionals in the design industry are tax except for those products).

hello german,

i think perhaps you are mixing 2 different topics in this thread. my thoughts were in reply to a post about the ipad not catering to professionals - who according to the original poster - have a god-given right to have equipment designed for them before mere mortals are allowed to get their dirty paws on high tech devices.

your thoughts on privacy i agree with, and considering that your handle is "german" and your syntax is too, i find it interesting that europeans and americans seem to have different takes on the privacy issue. not wanting to get into profiling here, but i have noticed this in conversation with colleagues from both sides of the pond. i also believe there is an age divide here, younger people find it natural to post all their info on social network sites, whereas my generation (mid40) balks at the idea of putting mobile phone number on the internet, never mind allowing strangers to see our CVs, invoices etc. just some observations.

pro vs consumer. true there is no real boundary, but obviously some devices are created for specific high-end tasks (film production requiring fast render times, etc) whereas others are more all-round, well designed devices for everyday activity like surfing and facebook and skype etc
best

i agree, the new era of batteries is very good.
i was apprehensive buying a MBP last year, the battery issue had me worried, but i have not regretted it.

This doesn't really come as a surprise.

I think it is tad ridiculous to have to wait a week for an exchange though. This shouldn't be a common occurrence so why the delay?

I personally am not giving up my rights to privacy so a device like this is not an attractive option.

This has got to be one for the record books. The negativity is Outstanding !

What is going on with this site that everybody is so up in arms about something so silly?

Its a product, take it or leave it, right ?

I think the root problem is that people were expecting something else when this product was announced.

I believe that the "iSlate" is still coming and will be priced around $3,000 and targeted for those in the graphic design industry.

This is a Pad.

For the iPod , non-Techy population.

A money maker and nothing more.

This economy is not the right environment to release a powerful and expensive piece of hardware like the "iSlate"

This is just to hold over the Masses, Develop compatible software, and expand on the technology for the " iSlate"

All of you who are concerned about this battery program need to chill.
YES - They ARE retrieving Data about usage and using it to further the User experience.

But do not over-estimate your importance in the eyes of :apple:
The don't give a Rats Ass about your personal Data ; Only how you use the Device.

**** ?? Are you afraid that Apple will try to acquire your Credit card Numbers and go on a shopping spree ? Or do you think they care about all the NASTY things you are looking at on the Net?? ****

Just wait for Q1 of 2011 and you will have your OSX1 in Tablet form,...

Until then, enjoy this small taste if the future.

I for one will be waiting for the 2nd Gen of software AND Hardware before I ever even THINK of buying an Apple product of ANY kind.

Lets keep these discussions a little more civil.

:)

Why does this merit 213 posts??

Ok, now 214.

Users can receive a replacement should their device's battery no longer hold a charge. The service will cost $99 plus an additional $6.95 shipping and applicable taxes.

By the time the average user's battery will no longer hold a charge they'll have already gotten the next iPad, or whatever other device, or would have sold off their iPad, etc.

A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain 80 percent or more of its original capacity during a lifespan of up to 1,000 recharge cycles.

What's the issue here?

Excellent points, especially regarding the information pertaining to usage duration between charges.

Apple tends to be more conservative with newer consumer technology in order to improve the end user experience. Perhaps Apple is intending on releasing a multi-touch OS X with newer hardware, time will tell. In the interim, I'm enjoying the ride. :)

It's nice that Apple has already planned the process for when an iPad's battery eventually fails, but this will not affect me as I will be upgrading the device with each new revision (as I have with the iPhone) and thus should not experience battery failure.

It's also very nice that Apple's products have such a great resale value as well...

I personally am not giving up my rights to privacy so a device like this is not an attractive option.

i tend to agree with you, one question out of curiosity: if there were an option to delete the memory of the ipad before sending it in for repair: would you trust it and make use of it?

i also agree with the poster who says apple has more important stuff on their plate than looking at pics of my family, but on principle i believe no one should
have access to my data, and this is a principle worth protecting.

on a related aside: interesting piece on BBC world service radio today. they're having a special about the web's influence on society this weekend, and today they interviewed journalists who were arrested in internet cafés minutes after sending off emails about the political situation in that particular country. interesting how fast the response can be. this was news to me.

What's the issue here?
What if there is no incentive for that user to buy a newer model?

What country ? Depending on that important detail, it would not be news for 65-70% of the world. Freedom is not Free

The fact is that Apple is marketing this as an alternative to a laptop rather than what it truly is, a giant iPhone minus the ability to make calls plus a few cool features.

I have nothing against the iPad itself, but I do think it's wrong of Apple to promise a tablet computer and then give us this.

I think this is the point Stately is trying to make.

Anyways, regardless of whatever, it'll be really cool either way. I'm certain it'll be fun, and once it becomes productive (which they, in some ways, are marketing it as such, and it could be VERY productive if Apple would implement the right things) I'll happily pick one up, but for the time being, my iPod touch meets my entertainment needs.

In conclusion:

Is it productive: Not really for those needing professional-level stuff
Could it be productive: Absolutely, if Apple chooses to make it so.
Will it be fun: Most likely
Even if it was less functional than the first Apple Newton device, would people still buy it because it's shiny and made by Apple: You betcha

You just answered your own concerns.

App Store + developers.

Productivity? It's a given.

Your iPod Touch is already inferior. It doesn't run iWork.
