It'll be interesting to see the use cases Apple presents for this device. I'm still not sure why they felt the need to make this.

To compete with the other. smaller tablets out there. Because there's a huge group of consumers that want an iPad but think the current one is too big and/or too expensive. There's definitely a market for a mini, as long as it's done well and priced reasonably.

With the new iPod Touch coming in at a whopping $299!!!! Where are they going to price this thing?? ... not sure I would pay $299 for it ... and I definitely have no plans to get a $300-$400 iPod Touch... Maybe the fancy strap adds $100+ to the cost of the touch?
That's their regular pricing for the iPod touch; it's nothing new. There is no 16gb new ipod. The 32gb is $299, and the 64gb is $399, which is exactly what my '2 generations back' ipod touch cost in 2009. What will be the price of an ipad mini? We don't know. If there's a 16gb model (don't know why there wouldn't be), I could guess $299 for that and work your way up by $100 increments for 32gb and 64gb.

I personally think this will be amazing. I love the fact that it will be a smaller, lighter device, and the smaller side bezel make it look really cool as well. What Apple needs is the new bezel technology to reduce the physical size of the iPads without sacrificing screen size, through reduction of bezel size. Of course you need some side bezel for the tablets to hold them though. I always found myself laying down with iPod Touch instead of my iPad just because iPad was so cumbersome to hold, especially while laying in bed.

Apple used to ALWAYS announce/release new products on Tuesdays...so this is a return to form, not a break from tradition.

The question now is, which to get? One of the new iPod touches? Or this iPad mini? :-D

well some one will eventually get it right... lol

and to the people saying that the imacs and macbook pro 13 inch retina will be the "one more thing" i think that one more thing stuff steve to it to his grave, everyone knows that was steve jobs kinda thing not tim cook whatever is gonna get announced is gonna get announced dont expect tim saying "oh and one more thing"

...to the street date for Microsoft's new Surface tablet.

Wow, I can't believe the surface hasn't shipped yet. It seems a little crazy to announce so early. The announcement gets people excited about your devices. But then you just make them wait. The excitement wears off. Attention turns to other devices. By the time they actually come out, people will be thinking, "Oh that old thing? I didn't know they were still selling those."

I get that you might be able to convince customers to wait for your device. But how long are they really willing to wait. And anyway, the Christmas shopping season means most people were going to wait anyway. I just think MS would have made a much more effective splash if they waited until around now.

It's mainly down to: Pocketable vs. screen size.
If the mini has a cell data option, that would be another major differentiator.

Unless the invites are in people's hands, it is complete BS.

iMacs, please.

Everything, please.

Apple has sucked at updating almost everything. iMacs, Minis, Pros are left hanging, and I don't consider that lame processor bump on the Pro to be an actual upgrade.

Thank you! I was already thinking I'm getting old...I still remember the Tuesday releases and how everybody was looking forward to Tuesdays to see if the Store is down for something new.

Btw...23 October is the Birthday of the iPod.

With the Nexus 7 priced at $259 (here in Canada), I'm really curious to see what apple will do with pricing. I really cant see how they could expect to sell it for more than $299.

It'll be interesting to see the use cases Apple presents for this device. I'm still not sure why they felt the need to make this.

I can easily see them present the new model as a cheap, light weight reading device but with the ability to run all the iPad apps, something that falls between Kindle and the current iPad, which is exactly what Kindle Fire is. Some have already wondered if iPad Air would be a better hypothetical name than Mini. It'll also be a perfect device to tie with Apple's efforts in the education sector.

I'm more concerned about the price. Seems like $199-$249 would be the sweet spot, less than the existing iPad but more than the other tablets. I think that would blow the competition away. However the current management team seems a bit...beancounterish...if you will. I'm afraid they will price it at $399-$499 to make more money short term and squander this opportunity to dominate the market long term.

(FWIW I don't think it makes sense to compare the iPM to the iPod Touch. The iPT is an iPhone without the phone, not an iPad that will fit n your pocket. Really a different market.)

It is replacing the iPad 2 in the Apple line-up, so a couple of months ago I would have predicted a $349 price for 16 GB wifi-- just under the iPad 2. However, with the new Kindle Fire HD, they are facing some real competition; so I would say somewhere in the $249-299 range is more likely. Apple has a high mark-up on options ($100 for 16-->32 GB vs. only $50 for Amazon), so thay may push them to the low end ($249) for the entry level.

I'd be surprised if they do not have a 4G offering either at launch or a few months later, at the usual +$130. There would be a big benefit there, as it would differentiate it much more from the Fire HD, which does not offer this.

There is a question as to whether they would offer an 8 GB model to cover the low end and give them and <$199 option. It's certainly possible; I can see arguments both for and against this.

I sure hope we get an announcement about some new desktop Macs. I understand Apple makes a boatload on all these toys but this is getting ridiculous. Some of us have invested in Apple because Mac was an awesome computing platform and this recent love affair with iOS is more than a little unsettling. Don't get me wrong - I think the iPad and iPhone are fantastic devices but I need to actually make a living and not just sit on my couch playing games or surfing Facebook and Twitter. I don't like seeing the Mac getting short shrift.

Interesting that there are loads of new "mac" comments in this ipad mini thread.

I wont be buying an iPad mini, Ill gladly wait for the iPad 4 to come out in a few months.

:apple: should try to hit the $199-$249 mark with the iPad mini.

I've been waiting for one of these ever since the first iPad came out, and I believe it'll eventually happen. But, as far as this event goes, given the track record on these predictions - I'll believe this date when I see some confirmation of an actual invitation.

We've been hearing different verses of this song, off and on, for quite a while now.

get with the times bro. Apple has declaired the post pc era. Computers aren’t for creating things, they're for consuming depthless content and putting birds in slingshots :apple:

There is no way Apple will hit $199, or even $249.

The new iPod Touch is priced starting at $299 (32GB of course, but flash memory is hardly the most expensive component.) Nexus 7 is sold nearly at cost at $199.

Plus the insane demand created at $199 means they would not be able to keep up with production until next year - People want to try an iPad, but don't want to invest $500. At $200 it is a whole different proposition.

A typical Apple event is 90 minutes long. I can’t see how the iPad Mini will occupy all that time. The order of the presentation will go something like this:
  • The amazing sales figures of the iPhones rollout – 2 minutes.
  • A video on the iPhone release or the “magical” iPad – 2 minutes
  • Now to the App Store… - 2 minutes
  • Here’s the new iPad Mini. It’s smaller, thinner, lighter, just as fast and last just as long as the iPad 2, run all apps from the Mac App Store – 30 minutes
  • One or two developers share demos of their apps – 15 minutes

And we are only at the hour mark. Apple can obviously do more than that.

This makes the most sense for pricing. Apple has always been big on making you stress over pricing "OMG! This is only $50 more or this thing is the same price but spec A is not as good but spec B is better. What do I get!?" This will make that pricing work for the iPod Touch, iPad Mini, iPad 2, and New iPad. :) See my pricing matrix below for example:
