Where are the 'this will never happen' people?

Still here. Just don't feel the need to chime in every time somebody passes gas or burps a noise that rhymes with "mini".

Wait and see is always the safest and less disappointing action to to take with these rumors.

Where is a ********** imac with f888ing USB3 s and better GPU some decent HDD/SSD. no mentioning the CPU

Yeah but if the specs are worse than Fire HD or Nexus 7 what is the selling point? iOS ecosystem? Apple logo? There's simply no reason this device should be inferior spec wise, especially when it's most likely going to be more expensive.

The specs can be worse on paper but the performance can be better in practice; iOS ecosystem is absolutely a strong selling point, as is build quality, customer service, and all kinds of other things.

Didn't he "yep" the earlier rumor too?

Sounds like confirmation bias to me - he gets credit when he's right, but doesn't get dinged when he's wrong. For all we know he's schizophrenic and walks around saying "yep!" all day.

No... ?

Depends on which spec it is. For instance Kindle Fire HD uses the OMAP 4460 chip which doesn't even come close to the good old A5 in graphics. On the other hand if it's a cheap tablet Fire HD will have a significantly higher DPI since Apple will not give it a Retina, which means it'll get stuck with the 1024 x 768 resolution for compatibility reasons.
I'm talking about the display. If the display is inferior to Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 it will be a failure IMO. If Apple is going release a device that is more expensive there needs to be a compelling reason for people to pay more.

But you have to admit that Retina is a big selling point for Apple and something they make a big deal about. I just think a device with a lower quality display is not a very good selling point. Now if there's a technical reason this device can't be retina perhaps they need to wait to release something that can be retina?

I dont think the mockup is accurate. if you examine the original ipad the border on the top is the same thickness as the border on the side. the bottom is slightly larger for the button. those mockup images show a very thin border on the sides which i dont think apple will follow as apple likes to leave space to be able to hold the tablet without touching the screen.

just my opinion. i think the ipad mini will be wider then what most have mocked it up too.

That's already been talked about. There doesn't need to be as much space on the sides to hold it because of the lighter weight. You won't have to hold onto it as tightly as you do the regular iPad, which allows them to make the bezel smaller.

No, he didn't. He only commented on Twitter where he said essentially nothing big was happening that day (alluding to the invites rumor). DeWitt's heart then sank.

He also confirmed the iPad Mini announcement would be a separate event when everyone was assuming the announcement was coming at the iPhone 5 event. Gruber broke it, JD yep'd it.

I can't recall a single time since the launch of loopinsight where JD has incorrectly yep'd a rumor. :D

Yeah, you know, since they've used Mini on some devices, I guess that works, but if it turns out to the _ultra_ thin, I think Air would work great ... plus that would follow their notebook naming convention and kind of imply "these devices are computers" +and+ potentially even set up the larger iPad to take on the Pro label[?]

They might also call them Susan.

Retina is a big selling point, but there's more to the device than just a display. I haven't tried the new Kindle Fire, I only have experience with the original one. That alone made me hesitant to try the new one because the user experience on the original one was so awful. None of us can say for sure if the mini will have a retina screen or not, but I still think that there will be plenty of people willing to buy it, even without retina. It just has to be priced appropriately. Even without retina, people will still be willing to pay the same or perhaps a bit more for a mini as they would for the Nexus.

He didn't. As far as I know Dalrymple hasn't been wrong when he used "yep". He's got probably the most solid source of any Apple writer and so far hasn't confirm anything that he wasn't sure of, and he confirmed some surprising ones such as the 2011 WWDC not having any hardware announcement.

Even with display, there are so many factors. The good thing about Apple's Retina displays were that even outside the resolution they improved on things like colors and minimizing the surface-to-display distance. If it's an in-cell display with the same characteristics of the iPhone 5 screen, the display will still look fairly decent even if it has the same low resolution.

The safe guess would be Apple will have no problem charging more, say $50, over the equivalent Nexus 7 for the smaller iPad, and consumers will pay it. Also if it's really light and sleek looking, it'll easily position itself as a superior alternative to Kindle and Nexus 7. They are good solid feeling devices but neither is particularly sleek. Then there's the ecosystem matter, retail availability, Apple brand value and all that.

Cute. Have you really ever gotten lost as a result of Apples new map?
No, you just want to be cute.

Yes, I have gotten lost as a result of the new Maps. I moved to a new city less than 3 months ago, and shortly after iOS6 came out, I used Maps to direct me to a business meeting, but Maps placed the location of my destination six blocks or so away from where it actually was. Thankfully, I'd left early enough (and punched up Google Maps through Safari) so I was able to find my way to the correct place and still be on time.

Then there was the time I used Maps' turn-by-turn directions to get me to another meeting, and using "Current Location" as my starting point started me off from a location a mile away from where I actually was. Technically, I didn't get lost since I knew my way to the highway where Maps eventually caught up to me, but there was a lot of "rerouting, rerouting" along the way, and I probably would've gotten lost if I didn't have a decent sense of direction.
