There is no way Apple will hit $199, or even $249.

$299 for the cheapest version would make sense to me. It's bigger than the Nexus 7, so it warrants more than the $199 that Google is asking. Throw in a $50 premium since it's an Apple product with really strong ecosystem, and $300 will sell like hot cakes. That also provides clear pricing distinctions with the other iPads: $300 for the iPad Mini, $400 for the iPad 2, and $500 for the iPad 3.

I hope people are wrong about the specs. I'm not sure how Apple can think selling a smaller iPad 2 at $50-$100 more than Fire or Nexus will fly.

I sure hope we get an announcement about some new desktop Macs. I understand Apple makes a boatload on all these toys but this is getting ridiculous. Some of us have invested in Apple because Mac was an awesome computing platform and this recent love affair with iOS is more than a little unsettling. Don't get me wrong - I think the iPad and iPhone are fantastic devices but I need to actually make a living and not just sit on my couch playing games or surfing Facebook and Twitter. I don't like seeing the Mac getting short shrift.

I'd like to see a desktop Mac update as well, but you're acting like they haven't released new Macbook Pros and Airs any time recently, and that those aren't awesome Mac OS X hardware platforms.

I would love it if Apple somehow managed to put a retina in this thing. But I doubt it.

Jim Dalrymple says "yep". That's as official as it gets without coming from Apple directly.

The Nexus 7 is not designed to make Google money, it's all about making money from Google Play, same with the Kindle Fire HD. Apple makes its money from hardware, the App and music stores, merely enable more wonderful from their hardware. However, both devices have better screen resolution than the iPad 2 (which some think will be the iPad Mini's resolution), meaning that they are going to come out with an inferior product (unless there is some killer feature the others don't have) and charge more for it.

Another likely scenario is that Apple produces an iPad Mini with vastly superior screen resolution, adds cellular connectivity to it, and charges much more than the loss-leader 7" devices out there. That to me would make *much* more sense than getting into a price war with companies profiting not off the devices, but on the content consumed on those devices.

To most of the market for this product, resolution isn't that hugely important. Most of these will be people that want an iPad but without the huge up-front expenditure. Having lower resolution won't matter as much as it does to the crowd here at MacRumors.

it all just about confirmed now

Jim Dalrymple just gave a "yep", that pretty much makes this official.

looks like here we go with another keynote :D:D

The Microsoft surface announcement is three days later. Are there rumors as to when that product might be released? If MS reveals sizes and pricing that day wouldn't that have a bigger impact on the mini's future then the prices of the other small tablets being discussed here? People have been complaining that MS hadn't revealed its pricing. But maybe both companies have been playing waiting games and Apple finally blinked in order to get its product in the market in time for the holiday season.

There's an interesting matrix of possibilities we face with this announcement: Pleased or displeased with the specs? Pleased or displeased with the pricing? What's the relationship between those spec and pricing revelations? And what are the implications when that new knowledge is compared to competitive offerings? It's going to be engaging.

On a different subject I don't think Apple would go with the "air "moniker for the mini because that would by implication make the regular iPad seem clunkier (non-air). I can imagine them doing some minor spec changes to the larger iPad and renaming the whole line iPad Air.

I thought apple was always against having a smaller ipad, deeming that tablet screen smaller then 10" is pointless?

Yeah but if the specs are worse than Fire HD or Nexus 7 what is the selling point? iOS ecosystem? Apple logo? There's simply no reason this device should be inferior spec wise, especially when it's most likely going to be more expensive.

Wifi Only

Seeing some of the rumors regarding WIFI only? I understand this from being able to price it more competitively, but does it make sense for a smaller, more portable iPad to be portability constrained by only offering a WIFI version? I'm not sure I'm buying this rumor...

The point is they need to differentiate this product from the others. They won't win on price, so they'll offer an inferior product for more money copying others? Does that make sense to you? How are they going to differentiate (in your opinion) from the others already out there? Do you think they'll charge more for an inferior product, and go against everything Apple is known for? I'm not saying they won't do it, I have no idea, but it goes against everything Apple, and they'd merely start a price war. The first thing the competition would do is lower their prices, and then Apple will be hugely more expensive than superior products out there. I'm pretty sure Apple is clever enough to know this, so I think it won't be a cheaper copy of what's already out there for a higher price, and I don't think they'll come in at a lower price. Can't wait to see what they do, I'm eager as hell to find out! :)

Depends on which spec it is. For instance Kindle Fire HD uses the OMAP 4460 chip which doesn't even come close to the good old A5 in graphics. On the other hand if it's a cheap tablet Fire HD will have a significantly higher DPI since Apple will not give it a Retina, which means it'll get stuck with the 1024 x 768 resolution for compatibility reasons.

Woohoo - been waiting on a kindle paperwhite because this may be better :D

I like the small form factor for reading, its easier to use commuting but the iPad is more useful just the current incarnation is a bit bigger then I need

In the exact same boat. If there is no iPad mini, I'm going Paperwhite and MBA 13". I need a new ereader. If there's a mini, I'll be buying that and getting an MBA next summer. :)
