I never got this 12.9 iPad rumor.

Certainly, a few people might use such a big iPad (showrooms, museums...) but I don't see many use cases that would make this product sell in big numbers.

Apple is not about filling every niche, otherwise they wouldn't have retired the XServe or the 17'' laptops. They retired all these products and usually keep a tight focus on hardware lineups.

And u didn't get the iPad mini rumor either

There are needs in all sizes my friend

Shame

That would be a shame. I own and use a iPad 3. And I would gladly see the next step in the iPad evolution. The platform is holding back due size and power restriction. A bigger iPad with high capacity battery and better heat emission. Would allow more powerful use scenarios, with higher spec technology. Combine this with a flexible and powerful IO interface(Thunderbolt). It would be the next game changer.
A iPad Pro could be the ideal playing field for App Developers. A window in the future of the next non Pro iPad.

I really hope to see a iPad Pro in the near future. Before Samsung or Google have a Android Tablet Pro, done right. And Apple must catch up.

Samsung bait. Just like that stupid watch.

I think Apple still has a watch or some fitness-focused wearable--- they've hired too many people related to that industry for there NOT to be one in the works.

Probably shouldn't think of it as a "watch" though.

Something along these lines (or bigger) will happen from Apple... iOS is the fastest-growing productivity platform, best for most things most people do, and so diversifying is inevitable, just as happened with Macs. The iPad Mini is a start; multiple iPhone sizes is likely too.

But when?

This year just seems WAY too soon to me. I would guess there's just too little demand, too many developer hassles when it comes to making optimized and great apps for it. (The kind of thing Android tablet developers seem to care too little about--or have their hands tied by the greater fragmentation.)

I'm sure Apple was playing with this (and many other things) in the labs. The labs where they say those "No"s they are so proud of! I doubt this was ever a "Yes."

Apple won't do a big iPad if they don't think it's going to be a good user experience. Already the reviews on the Samsung Tab Pro show that it's just awkward to hold for any length of time.

As for needs in all sizes, that's why Samsung makes a spectrum of device sizes in literally 0.1" increments, I guess they want to see what sizes people actually use?

this is a clever new approach by Apple. "leak" the idea that they're making this big screen iPad Pro, let Samsung freak out and make a product to beat Apple to market, and see if the market is ready for a product like it. a free alpha- and beta-tester, if you will. i own a note 10.1, and have played around with the 12" note pro at BB, and i must say that thing is huge. kinda like the equivalent of the 17" MBP (remember those?)... some people will buy it, but it won't be worth the production costs. same thing with the supposed "iWatch" --> galaxy gear.

clever. very clever.

When does Samsung ever do anything right except copy the work of other great tech companies?

Closer to the truth:

Apple isn't shelving the idea but rather Digitimes is nixing its rumor.

That "iPad Pro" is too large for me. In stead of large iPads, I will prefer a convertible MacBook Air, which can be used as a PC and a touch screen "Pad".

I really am surprised that has not come out. Hopefully, they are working on just that :)

The idea is that Samsung will not just be copying Apple products, but also rumoured Apple products. Including rumoured Apple products that would fail if anyone, including Apple, would release them.

Like the Samsung Gear watch. Windows 8 is the same category; there were so many predictions that Apple would combine MacOS X and iOS (which in my opinion would be a disastrous mistake) that Microsoft started believing it and copied it.

Yea, I'm sure Windows 8 was based what Apple might do.

That's just too big imo, I know some folks are clamoring for such a product but I can't see it really selling.

I get the idea. That's not the issue, or my issue I should say. My issue stems from the fact it's pretty idiotic to use a 12" iPad Pro as an example of Samsung reacting to Apple rumors. An iWatch? I can totally agree that was a reactionary product. Since the OP is about the tablet and the original comment from Ballis called it "Samsung bait" specifically, I was simply pointing out the fallacy. There's no doubt about the fallacy in that statement.

Re; Win8. I am going to disagree with you on that one. MS realized too late they missed the boat on most of the growth of mobile. I think Win8 was a Hail Mary from Microsoft to try to quicky gain traction in Mobile and maintain their bread and butter Windows. Win8 was a poor attempt to straddle the fence between mobile and desktop. Not their best effort by far.

MacChineseWhispers.

It's just internal squealers getting paid a F load & spreading rubbish.

aw shucks :(

Does this mean that the plans for the 56" iPad Air Maxi Pro are also on hold? Steve Jobs would never let this happen! I had heard that Safari would be snappier on all the Pro line. :( Apple is DOOMED, I say...DOOMED!

Must be nice to make money off blatantly fabricating news articles for hits. Thx again Digitimes for your always reliable articles.

Why is the Galaxy Gear a reaction to the non existent iWatch? What about the Pebble?

I've got a much larger audience for you. Average consumers. The iPad as a productivity device is niche compared to it's use as a consumption device. I would venture to say most iPads never leave the home or the car, and in those locations it spends most of it's time propped up or in a lap. It's just as easy to prop a 12" tablet as it is to prop a 9" tablet. I personally would get one.
