We still have an 8 Plus in our family, and it's definitely showing its age in everyday use. And you'll have to upgrade if you want to run iOS 17, which your current phone won't support. But you should be able to get a good deal on an iPhone 13 or 14 if you don't want to spring for the 15.
Do they really "need" an iPhone? Won't am unlocked smartphone from Costco for a few hundred, may $5-600 do just fine?

Oh boy Apple's official yappy dog reports the official leaks he's given.

iPhone 15 is update not an upgrade not anything special unless your current old iPhone is showing it's age. With the economy the way it is only diehard Apple Fanboy Cult will be rushing to buy the 15.

Apple's main product lines have peaked and no big new must have features. Only real new product is VisionPro and that is an expensive niche product that hasn't built a developer base outside of Apple to interest the public. I wouldn't want to work in Apple Marketing for the next few years they got a lot on their hands to make incremental updates sound like big upgrades.

So stoked and excited. I’m ready to order my new iPhone this year. 🙃
I'm ready!

I guess I am a Fanboy Cult. As I tend to upgrade yearly.

Yep. Count me in. I work hard so I can buy shiny things.
I'm also a yearly upgrader. It's easy to buy into the hype of the marketing machine telling us why they think we NEED the new phone and why last year's flagship is now so "gross" and outdated. Technology brings me joy, and it is my little escape from the busy and often stressful life that I'm living. I work hard so I can afford this technology and have these fun moments.
