There's every likelihood that the 5S will incorporate tweaks to the finish of the phone now that they have learned from a year of manufacturing the iPhone 5. The housing shown could well just be a modified one from the iPhone 5 production line to prove the assembly of components would fit in the available space.

Minor changes to anodising etc may therefore be incorporated before we see the finished product.

Apple's old slogan was "Think Different" not "Think Different in two year predictable increments."

Geez Louise. All these people who reach back to Apple's old ad campaigns and either were too young to remember, have selective memory, or outright amnesia.

Back in the "Think Different" era (and before in some cases) the new iMac model was... a different color, or colors, or dots or flowers. The 7xxx and 8xxx series Power Macs models existed for at least a year, often two, without any update at all, even a speed bump. And how many ship dates did Apple miss. Oh boy. The new polycarb G4/G4 PM cases went from blue to gray to mirrored to aluminum, and up until the recent update, the PM/MP case has been virtually unchanged for 10 years. And the PB/MBP is also pretty much the same shell, moderinzed, much like a Porsche 911.

So please don't delve back to the "good old days" of Apple to make a point that doesn't bolster your argument. You need to know history, not just slogans.

That's what the 'S' is for. 4Same, 5Same :)

Blasphemy !

FUNFACT for you; it stands for "Speed", which is exactly what you get if you purchase the 3GS, 4S or 5S.. Not the whole package but intern hardware imporovements. So please stop whining about things you don't understand. Go buy a Samsung, HTC or even a Nokia if you want ;)

I feel like I've not much choice in upgrading to this. My iPhone 4 is on deaths door, in fact waiting through the summer to hold onto it is going to be difficult...

Best Buy here in the states has a promotion going where you can trade in a working iPhone 4/S, and receive a $150 credit toward a 16gb iPhone 5 which at Best Buy comes to free. It's tempting for me, but I'm going to hold off for the 5S. Just thought I'd throw that out there if you're in the states.

Upgrade to the 5, once the 5s is announced, $100 less

If the 5s is going to have an A6, ummm, no thanks.

Note 3 here :)
I'm considering this option too, but I'm tired of waiting on updates for my phone. Plus all of the bloatware on the S4 was just too much for me. I hate to say it, but for me the iPhone has just provided an overall better experience.

Same tired mantra being posted here...

"My iPhone 5 has never scratched..." <-- So no one else's should have either. Nice logic there.

Or conversely, "my iPhone 5 is scratched" <-- so this is a problem for everyone. Nice logic there

"Who cares if nothing's new, millions will buy it..." <-- Gee what a great selling point. Thanks for lumping us in with the retarded masses.

Or conversely, I'm gonna keep buying this phone even though I hate it

"What do you expect? It's an "S" year..." <-- I expect a company that prides itself on innovation to, you know.. INNOVATE!!

Name some innovations you're looking for?

And did I miss something where it was written in stone that "innovation" is a 24-month event? Perhaps people here have forgotten how Apple changed the design of the original iPhone to iPhone 3G in *GASP* ONLY 12 MONTHS!!!:eek:

...

Did I miss something where it was written that you have to buy the new iPhone? If you don't like it don't buy it, or switch to another phone. Not sure why this is such a hard concept to grasp for some.

The S line isn't intended to targeted non-s users. Most of us are on two year contracts and simply can't or don't want to spend the extra money to upgrade every year. For current 4/4S users it's a beneficial upgrade. I wonder what else they have in store though to convince current 5 owners that they should upgrade. We've seen this previously in other S models with faster HSPA speeds, Siri, etc..

The larger battery is no surprise. Typically they tout a faster processor, better battery life and a better camera than the previous version. I'm curious if the battery life will be much better or just there to power a new processor.

I'm a little surprised of the negativity and bitterness in this thread. Not that it's a bad thing but are users getting bored of seeing such a predictable updates? Normally you see a lot of people defending Apple on here.

A date code visible on the bottom of the main chip reads "1243", signifying that the chip was manufactured in the 43rd week of 2012, corresponding to late October.

Soooo this thing is already 8 months old :p
The latest and greatest iPhone is running on last year's technology :D

This. Exactly this.

I don't know why everybody here gets so torn up because it's not a radical enough upgrade.

It was 2009 when the iPhone got the first "S" model... and again in 2011.

Gee... 2013 shouldn't be a surprise. There seems to be a pattern here.

There are plenty of people who are still using the iPhone 4 and 4S... and billions of people who don't have an iPhone at all.

What are you talking about? There's 100's of phone to choice from. The amount of choice & variety you have has never been so good.

That isnt a daul LED.

Its the original round window Blurred.

Not too sure if this was supposed to be sarcasm so apologies if it is but that's definitely not a round window blurred. You can tell because otherwise the rest of the phone would be much more blurred than it is and the iPhone text would be barely legible.

Hope they have optical image stabilization for the camera. that's the one key feature I've been waiting for to upgrade my phone.

Really? You thought he was serious?

The photo looks like a fake. Too many inconsistencies. The text on the battery is perfectly aligned even in the crimps on the battery cover. i.e. the LH in the VPN:

Why do I keep reading that people think the fingerprint sensor will be hidden in the bezel? That patent was JUST published. On the other hand, Apple has other fingerprint sensor patents, that hide it in other places, like behind the screen or in a hidden window next to the screen. Seen here..http://www.patentlyapple.com/patent...ometric-features-for-e-commerce-security.html

It was just published but filed a long time ago. That means it was invented a long time ago.

If iOS7 is anything like OS X Mavericks battery life could actually improve even for older phones (mostly the iPhone 5). As always BT, WiFi, and Wireless are the biggest energy hogs so if someone w/ an iPhone 5 or older has a bunch of social media apps that constantly push and pull data they could be hurting. But that's the reason you upgrade every two years.

I hope you are right and if so the 5S could have amazing battery life.

Anyone who uses a 4 or 4S and doesn't go 5S, well they have no right to complain about anything.

True. And you've got to take advantage of the carriers' subsidies as much as possible since they gouge us the rest of the two years :(

Nice article. And the photos look rather legitimate.

But the MacRumors staff here don't know for certain it will be called 5S, no one does outside of Apple. That's only their guess. I hate it when people claim they know something when in fact it's only their best guess.

Well, if so they shouldn't be surprised if Samsung continues to gain market share. Some more innovation would be welcome.

Based on some of the comments on here, it's sometimes hard to tell :D

Since I'm loving my iPhone 5 and pretty happy with it right now, I do t plan on getting this 5S. But then again I expect Apple to have some other hidden feature besides the spec increases to temp some of us iPhone 5 users as well.

It was just published but filed a long time ago. That means it was invented a long time ago.

The fingerprint scanner hidden under the bezel was filed in Q1 of 2013, while the fingerprint, scanner in which I was speaking and showing of was filed in 2011...
