I'd rather not have to wait until fall to get multitasking on my iPad. But, you know, at least I'll get it on my 3GS pretty soon. Or a newer model of the iPhone when I move to Canada and need to get a new account set up.

I was gonna be happy with just multi-tasking, honestly, and then they add folders and a unified mailbox? Helloooo.

11:08AM Q: But what about Pandora? A: (Jobs) I don't think you're right. It doesn't use that much data.

11:07AM Q: Given that multitasking will increase data usage, how do you think AT&T will handle that? A: (Jobs) I'm not sure that's a correct assumption.

And black is white and the sky is yellow and gravity is not a law...

Smart for Apple not to give a date/month. "Summer" is very vague and gives them some leeway. Summer could mean September. Fall could mean November.

I think they got burned by their March prediction for ipad.

Hey what ever happened to the tethering that was promised "soon" in iphone 3.0? Or am I dreaming? Did that actually get stated last year?

Tethering is AT&T's problem. Every other country in the world has had tethering capabilities since the day 3.0 came out. The day.

No new notification framework. Nothing like those popups. Apple really failed on that one.

I agree on that point. There's a lot to like in this OS update, but they did drop the ball on that one.

Also, did I miss it or was there no mention of files (shared storage for attachments and moving docs between apps or whatever)? That would be a major disappointment.

You're surprised that something released several years ago is now outdated? Welcome to the world of technology!

I have a JB iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 2G with 3rd party multi-tasking and I have never ONCE experienced a lag or even a lock-up. I use Pandora and LAST.FM while surfing the web or checking email - all without issue.

Surely Apple could enable it on older hardware as this has been done for years on the original iPxx devices from the first iPhone to the first iPod Touch.

D

Alright, I'm very pleased with everything today! Before I read too much more complaining... I'm leaving.

Have a good one, everybody!

Does anybody know if apple is planning on upgrading the iPhone 3GS hardware this year at all? Unfortunately, I'm still using the first gen iPhone :p but I'd rather not upgrade now if they're just going to update the hardware sometime later this year. These new features sound very cool and worth it for an upgrade.

Looks like I will be preordering the htc evo on the 16th after all.

HUGE DITTO!

Also did anyone notice there was no mention of screen res increases?! I mean why give dev access to API NOW, and then change the resolution in 2 months?

Nope, if you had followed the news it is the opposite. Probably there i a limit or or battery will explodes!!! But music will play, localizations, gps will continue, and many other things. Reread them

Nope, the original poster was right. there is no real multitasking fro 3rd party apps. What Apple offers now goes a long way towards satisfying many customer needs. OS will help apps to do some multitasking for them but it's a far cry from what Android offers.

he said it's not on API for multitasking, but a few. depends what they finally want to support. and the 3G is going to be 2 years old when OS 4 is released and for a lot of people that means they are eligible for subsidized prices on new iphones

The only issue I see with that is that the 3G is still being actively sold by Apple and it's partners. I can sort of understand them dropping support for the original iPhone and 1st gen touch completely, but someone could buy an iPhone 3G between now and the release of OS 4.0 and be stuck on a 2 year contract with a crippled OS.

These changes will convince more users to upgrade their phones, even if they grumble about it. And Apple makes more money.
I think waiting 3 years per purchase is a good start. My monitor is about to hit 3 years old and I'm going to replace it with a U2410.

I'm not a fan of devices but waiting this long for iPhone OS 4.0 looks like it was the right thing to do. The less money I can give any corporation the better.

Why? Because you won't get it when you think you should?

So instead of buying the 3G iPad when it comes out, enjoying it with OS 3.0, then upgrading to 4.0 in the Fall, you're instead going to not buy one, and not enjoy it with 3.0? Then wait until Fall anyway (because you have no choice), and buy it then? Yeah.....that makes sense.

Do they run the iPhone OS?

Version 3 already makes the 3GS stutter. I had zero belief that it could be made better by throwing MORE tasks at it.

Wait, I thought the 3GS ran stuff super smooth? Now it stutters?

(Or even better) I thought the 3GS wasn't much of an upgrade to the 3G, so why can't the 3G do multitasking?
:D

LTD, no doubt you have been posting on both macrumors and appleinsider during the event, whats your secret? Copy or paste or individual treatment to both sites? You must be fired up right now!!!!

Only been posting here, actually.

I usually give individual treatment to both sides after copy-paste of a main idea.

If you ever have more than one conversation running at the same time on MSN on your Windows box, it's pretty much the same idea.

iAd - well kinda makes sense for a developer preview event

Folders - like the concept, gotta see the icon in action to make a judgment

Wallpaper - don't use it?

Aaaargh, decisions, decisions. Do I stick with the iPod Touch and just upgrade that to 4.0 & also get the EVO from Sprint, or get the iPhone and go through the hassle of ETF & AT&T?

The things a tech geek must deal with. :)

Evo + Hotspot + iPod Touch with 4.0 = win?
