No multitasking support for 3G. Ouch. Time to upgrade. Again!
you make it sound like that's not abnormal with apple. you make it sound like that's not normal with apple. ;)
You make it sound like Apple is the only one pushing cell phone upgrades. Pretty much every carrier expects you to upgrade your phone when you renew your contract.

Do Microsoft phones currently have a game centre-type service?

I had no idea they did.
XBox Live is effectively on Windows and Windows Mobile 7 as well.

Very valid point.

Would be interesting to see nintendo actually react and sort out their system though..
Maybe we should see Nintendo DS sales.

Totally killing everything else...
Bur they have the hardware and software (funnily enough a pokemon heart gold ad just came on tv as I said that)
just would be nice for them to get a proper online service up...downloadable games/etc.

Maybein 5 years :D

I'm underwhelmed by the task switching, err umm multitasking. Yeah it provides a level of multitasking but its nothing new and it does limit what services can run in the background.

Overall I'm a bit disappointed.

HUGE DITTO!

Also did anyone notice there was no mention of screen res increases?! I mean why give dev access to API NOW, and then change the resolution in 2 months?

Good observation. It looks like iPhone will remain to be far behind Android sets both in hardware and software departments.

From Gizmodo, just thought it was an interesting note:

On a side note, Steve Jobs looks pretty energetic today. Much more so than recent presentations that we’ve seen. He’s pretty fired up right now, talking about iAds.

I agree 100%. Multitasking and springboard wallpaper were the two things everybody's been asking for that I had no desire for.

I think they're going to lose quite a few customers over this. Not that it matters.

:confused:DS(Wii)Ware allows you to DL games now?

This is just how I thought "multi-tasking" would be implemented: with a few background APIs for programs that really need to function in the background, and better saved states for everything else. I am actually pleasantly surprised that they implemented background GPS and VOIP; I thought they would be too power-hungry to make the cut.

If you're a smart dev, you will anticipate this, whether it's announced or not. You can get the screen dimensions in code and calculate the aspect ratio, and adjust your UI appropriately right now.

We're talking about the service here. Anyone can see Gaming Centre is a carbon copy of Xbox LIVE with just a different name.

As long as gamecenter doesn't run in the background (live psn and xbl) this is no different than plus+ and the others.

Nintendo does a fine job with their hardware and software integration. They even have plenty of first party software that's enough to entice people to spend money on a console that's not sold at a loss. Profits off of the hardware and software? Who would have thought of that?

You can download games and demos right now. You can even get DLC content from going in store.

One more thing, the Wii can handle any sized optical disc with its slot drive.

Just following this on Engadget, I'm getting really excited. The iPhone has multitasking! What are people going to complain about now?

1. No new notification system
2. No widgets on homescreen
3. "Can't run X feature on my older device" (multitasking is CPU heavy, deal with it)
4. iPad update not until the fall, no mention of dashboard (iPad *just* came out, not that surprising)
5. Complaints resulting from misconceptions about iAd (Ads are not going to be any more numerous than they are now, relax.)

Have I missed anything?

#1 and #2 are the bummers, but the multitasking and folders implementations are so perfect that overall I'm impressed with the update. And the Game Center thing was a major surprise. Imagine if Apple cared about games on the Mac as they did on the iPhone...

Do they run the iPhone OS?

Version 3 already makes the 3GS stutter. I had zero belief that it could be made better by throwing MORE tasks at it.

Um...You should check your phone out. Version 3 on the 3GS runs as smoothly as any OS I've ever used, mobile or otherwise. If you want to really experience a stuttering os, check out android on the Nexus One.

Hardware upgrade?

Is it me or did I miss the hardware upgrade? Are they really going to have the same hardware running for 24 months in a row?? (I mean by Summer '11 it will be 24 months in a row).

That is shocking.

Let me break it down for you:

iAd - crap...if you're not a dev, it's just garbage cluttering up your phone. out of the 85 million iphone/itouch users....how many are devs? that's right, not many.

Folders - these folders showing multiple icons looks hideous. at least make the "folders" look like folders or something more clean and presentable. not an icon with 4 little squished icons in it to represent a folder. very un-apple like in the design department.

Lock screen - nothing...nada.....no useful lock screen, no tweat to the notifications, nothing. this is where apple really needed to focus their attention, not multi-tasking. super fail apple.

Wallpaper - this works on the ipad because there is a huge screen, but when you take a small screen like the iphone and clutter it with tons of apps and then throw a background pic in there....it looks like a MESS!

the whole iphone is becoming a congested mess.

no bueno dude

agree with 100% of what u say, the folders look awfull,

atleast do something like itunes does for generes, like cool icons for games / eductation whatever.

**** im so disapointed

A lot of these new features look really cool. I can see Game Central really taking off. Multitasking took a while to come, but Apple really did it the best way they could and you've got to hand it to them for that. A lot of the other smaller things are really cool as well. Can't wait for this update, though I'll need to upgrade my phone.

Should I get a 3GS or wait until June if Apple will announce a new iPhone then?
