what are you talking about? it's called "all calendars" and "all contacts". What I wish they'd add to that is when you're viewing a contact that it shows you what group it's in.

Not only show what group(s) the contact is in but the ability to change the group or add to multiple groups within the contact.

In a world without Apple fascism this might be true, but there isn't free choice of apps at Apple, we all know that.

Wow, what a ridiculous comparison. First of all, there has been an agreement from day 1 that my TV viewing would have ads. That did NOT exist with my phone. And thanks to technology, I have the power to not see them at all and still get the program. But that isn't the real problem with your comparison - my tv doesn't know where I am, it doesn't have access to my private email or track my web browsing, you are handing over private data without permission to total strangers. Wonderful. Have fun with that.

You know you don't HAVE to download the Apps that contain advertising right?
Ad driven entertainment isn't a new concept. I don't think you get what this is all about. If you don't want to pay for an application you can, instead, if you so choose, sit through a small amount of advertising, thus selling yourself as a potential customer to companies that are willing to pay for the privilege of your time. It isn't like the Iphone OS itself has advertising. Your phone calls won't be interrupted by 30 second spiels by the late Billy Mays or the latest in feminine hygiene
.

Okay, so I only read about 12 pages, but I can't be the only one thinking they didn't show us everything, am I?

This was a "Sneak Peek" after all, not a release and Joe iphone user wasn't meant to be the audience, the developers were. Obviously Apple knew those of us Kool-Aide drinkers would be aware of what came out here, but still.

So to all of you saying "I can't believe it doesn't have ________ or _______" Take a deep breath and wait just a little longer...

No Flash support mentioned. You're an idiot, Mr. Jobs.
There's an app for that. (no seriously, who are you? )

And I'm getting sick of HTML5 this and HTML5 that....
Better prepare yourself for an extended illness throughout the foreseeable future then.

This just solidified my decision - No iPhone this fall, will be getting Win Phone 7 which is not going to shove an Ad "Tentpole" up my ass.
As if anyone else gives two flying ffffrogs what you will or will not be purchasing.

What I want to know is, did all of those in lock step with the reality distortion field save some of that Flash ad hate for Apple's iAd platform? Or do you love it because it came from the mouth of Steve?
Did you overlook the word "interactive" somehow?
Are you also unaware of Flash's limitations, vis-à-vis a touch-based user interface?

___

Anyway, my iPad (from which i post this note) is happy about today's developments.

Facepalm. Okay, let's narrow it down.

iAds is the sleeker, more "enjoyable" form of Google Ads. Agree?

If iAds replaces all Google Ads within free iPhone Apps, that's great. Agree?

If all free iPhone Apps now have adds via iAds, that's manageable. Agree?

If payed apps now have ads (as some already do), that sucks big. Agree?

What makes you assume these ads will have access to your email? Location sure, but unfortunately, that's a trend Google started. And uh, do you suspect people will come to sequester you? Or do you have something to hide? Like, you do drugs, or have raped someone? I agree, it sucks that these corporations are stealing our private information, but apparently, it's inevitable.

Something tells me this is Apple's new big way to make money and thou shalt comply or else.

You're truly out of your mind. These ads are an option for developers to use if they wish. Or they can choose to use another ad network. Or they can choose to not use ads at all.

What I should have said was to the effect of syncing cloud based calendars, i.e., gmail, alongside Exchange. If you chose to sync Exchange calendar events, you are then forced to sync over the hardline for iCal, etc. Or, you can push exchange through iCal, blah blah blah. This causes duplicate entries in iCal and the need to sync over USB in order to be updated. Same holds true for Contacts.

My Palm Pre accepts credentials for both accounts, merges each systems' calendar and contact entries into the view, all over the air. I refuse to post personal calendar entries into my Exchange system, and vice versa.

Not sure I understand this one in regard to the calendar.

My wife has both exchange calendar and we sync mobile me cal both over the air. They are both independent and they do not sync to each other at all. But both can be viewed together by showing all calendars.

Tons of Windows Mobile Apps with Ads. The iAd program does not shove anything anywhere, it allows another way for developers to use ads in their apps and integrates them into the apps better.

Since Microsoft already operates a very large online advertising service you should expect a very similar offering for WM developers.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Oh so your solution is for me to open my wallet to Apple. Wow.

And I did buy THE PHONE. It is MY SCREEN, not theirs. Turning my phone into a Minority Report-like hounding of me with ads was never part of the deal Jobs first presented with the iPhone. This is utterly ridiculous. We need to draw the line somewhere or you may as well give up any idea of life without ads everywhere, tracking you, hunting you, invading your privacy. Is that what you really want?

You apparently do not own a phone with 3rd party applications on it. Go buy one and return as an informed commenter.

Using your phone requires you to view a single ad. The agreement to view or not view ads is on an app by app basis, just like your computer is today. The ads already exist, Apple is just providing a different implementation for developers.

You can't make money when people are happy with their computers for 7-10 years.

Wait, wait. So now you agree people shouldn't upgrade til they want, but those guys want everyone to have the next greatest thing?

Is it April 1, again?

Don't own a TV, eh?

Developers that go nuts with ads that hound the users won't sell many apps. It's that simple.

First off, I can't belive I am validating you with a responce. But some times there are atrocity against common sense that cannot be tolerated.

The agreement with your iphone was that it would make phone calls along with a handful of other features. Apps didn't show up for over a year later.

You are not handing over anything without permission. Read and understand the user agreements. If you don't agree, don't download the app. If you agree then you are giving permission. Apple has even included the option to turn off location features.

I don't know what to make of any of this.

I guess I'll need to dump my iPhone 3G if I want multitasking. I just came off of my contract and I was planning on buying whatever the next version of the iPhone is when it's released, having skipped over the 3Gs. I guess my old phone will be relegated to being a pseudo iPod Touch.

No summer release of 4.0 for the iPad is a letdown.

iAd... I guess, ideally speaking, it means we'll see version A of an app that's free and includes ads, and version B of an app that you purchase and is ad free... I could go for that, potentially.

The ad thing is definitely what the Flash war is all about, so it wasn't a big surprise.

These are not your typcal ads. If you saw what was shown, many of these ads are actually apps. So you could be in an free utility app that has a Ad for a game, like the toy story one shown, you then can play a sample of it etc, and then decide to purchase and download the game. Even the Nike one was for a downloadable app to create you own shoes. Could be an app for a movie and if you have interest in the movie, you can click on it and it would show you what local theaters it was playing (Based on your current location), show movie times, buy tickets, etc, using all the avail services on the OS to make it interactive. This is what makes these interesting. Its not static banner ads or ads you click on and they shut down your app and then open a web browser to show you a site etc.

So that's pretty cool, what if Apple actually makes adverts acceptable and not an annoyance? We should give it a chance and see, I'm sure they don't want to annoy us with ads! If ads are actually relevant and not about online casinos and how to "get ripped in 6 days" then I'm sure people would actually not hate them!

Wow, people are crazy!

I personally don't oppose the iAds. If it makes some coin for the free dev's, great! I've got so many top free apps and hell if I could make them. It's not like you HAVE to click on the ad at the bottom of the screen, it's just there, ignore it.
Also, the screen lock thing - damn straight this should come on the next iPhone release but no way could they talk about it in this conference. It would give so much away about the release! I don't think knowing you can do that will make the world of difference to dev's anyway? But correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I own the 3G and it works fine for me, I love it. If I fancy the new iPhone I will get it, but otherwise, just wait it out until prices come down or for the next one.
Apple may be behind on plenty, but at least it is moving forward and not stuck in reverse.

Get some perspective.

The 1st Generation iPhones will be able to upgrade to OS 4, albeit without some of the features.

The phones will remain fully functional - how does this diminish their longevity?

you miss the point, upgrading is a CHOICE not due to problems with the hardware/software and thus longevity still strongly applies

Hmm, you guys are missing MY point, in which I was talking to individuals here at the forum. If I wanted to talk to Apple, I'd "post" it elsewhere.

Apple's head is finally screwing itself on (that sounds dirty for some reason)

Looks exciting.

EDIT: Sucks having a 3G though, Apple better release a bangin' new iPhone this summer along with the OS, because there's no way I'll waste money on a 3GS.

People moan about the lack of multitasking, then when the iPhone gets it they moan about how it should have had it sooner/how it's ripped off. There's literally no pleasing some people. Would you rather NOT have the OS 4.0 updates? I could argue that the entire Android OS was originally a "stolen, catch up idea" from the iPhone. The logic that everything has to be novel to be worthwhile is incredibly flawed. These are great features that make the iPhone better, nothing to whinge about here. Yes, I personally wanted a better lock screen with more info, but (as Shane on 1Up used to say): "It's nice to want things."

As for the Ad service thing, hate to break it to you but you're already getting all the ads developers want you to see via google ads. This is just another (and better) option for developers.

Quit 'yer moaning.

First off, I'm not moaning. Sure it's fine that the changes are coming. I would atherosclerosis not have iads (I love that the name autocorrects to aids, the new pad with aids). I don't see anything via google ads. I use adblocking on the desktop. Again my issue is with how much bandwidth or space these ads will take. Depending on implementation. I think that's a valid concern.

The thing is, there are features previewed as a peek into the future and frankly my issue is to do with what an affair was made of such basic stuff. Just release a press release and move on. Nothing shown was worth a press event.

I've never chanted the mantra of multitasking , multitasking! I'd rather see a better tab implementation on the iPad, added gestures for forward back, and an noninvasive notification system that doesn't interrupt a workflow.
