Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 Media Event: 'Sneak Peek Into the Future'

Flash and Flash

Everyone complains the iPhone doesn't have flash, but what phones do? I know the HTC Desire has it, but what other phone has it?

I'm guessing most people are complaining about the iPhone Safari browser doesn't support Adobe Flash that some websites use for animation, and not a flash for the camera.

Of course, a proper camera flash on the iPhone won't hurt. :D

No that's what the OS scheduler is for. It works automatically.

It can't work automatically unless the iPhone can quadruple its ram to save app states on in ram. The new API gives apps the ability to save data so they can restore their state. Unless the app is written with this new api, it would not have any idea how to restart in a state different than it's normal startup.

well I didn't JB to use wallpapers, or to multitask, or to copy&paste... there're small things that make a great experience... ever wondered how many characters you have left until you need to send two SMSs? Well, apple's message app won't tell you. LockInfo is another of those small bits that affect the user experience.. SBSettings.. I simply could not use a non-JB iphone... go prefs every time I want to able/disable WIFI or adjust the brightness etc....? ROFL!!

there's more, but that should be enough.....

For you, yes. For me, no.

What do they mean by "you won't have to worry about closing apps"? So what if I use Skype while I'm not at home, but when I get home, I want Skype to stop notifying me of every message I get since I'm now on my computer, I can't quit Skype? Or will I have to go to Settings and turn off notifications for Skype? Wtf, that's not something I want to do multiple times a day!

If only they added tethering Jailbreaking would be virtually dead.

Not a chance. If what we saw in the presentation is all that the new OS has in store, then it still leaves out the following things that the jailbreaking community handles quite well with their apps:

- a lockscreen that is actually useful & informative
- downloading of files from Safari
- downloading of non-photo email attachments
- access to the file system (iFile)
- SSH
- themes
- bluetooth file transfer

Granted, these features may not appeal to most people, but for some of us, these features (which should be standard in smartphones by now) take the iPhone from being a good device to an indispensable one.

*Impressed but the keynote went a little downhill*

Well Jobs hit us straight away with the exciting stuff - multitasking etc but it sort of started going a little downhill around the Enterprise section.

I was hoping for some more business orientated things such as docs sharing and printing, too be honest I thought he was going to pull wifi syncing out the bag.

There was that slide with loads of new features splattered everywhere - any ideas of a list of these??

Also iPad in the fall??? Does that mean maybe time for incorporating printing and better doc management?? I hope so!

People RELAX this was a preview not a freaking release.
"Oh where's the lock screen with my email alerts/text message" "Why can't multitasking work on my old technology device "Why does Apple. . . Blah blah blah"

Just shut up. You guys always complain when we don't have something and then when they give us something you bitch.

You guys need to either get a new phone or create your own phone and see how that works out. :)

When can we customize our SMS sounds?????

I don't know how Apple has gone so long without implementing this. It ***** me to tears because too many of my friends have iPhones with the same message tone... imagine what it must be like at Apple Campus :\ Surely SOMEONE in the company noticed.

Wow, I'm really disappointed with some of this thread. I've been coming here on and off for a while but I've never seen so much negativity until today.

It's been said a lot but I just want to reiterate:

- Developer's conference means ads ARE a feature to DEVELOPERS.

- As someone else said, Apple's hardware functions for a lot longer than some other companies' hardware, however...

- Apple updates their software and stops supporting old hardware pretty often, as has always been the case.

If you don't like iPhones or Apple, no problem. You don't have to. You can think they're overpriced and worthless. So, buy something else, and um, don't hang out at Apple fan sites. It's called common sense. And if you really have nothing better to do than complain or troll on a Thursday afternoon, maybe you should spend that time doing something more productive.

As for myself, I have nothing better to do with my time today, I admit it. But I'm not trolling Windows communities, either, or exaggerating about how awful things are. It's a phone. You don't even need one. People got along fine without them. If you like it, and you like the changes, awesome. If you have an iPhone and feel shafted for some reason, get a different phone.

My 3G iPhone, the only iPhone I've ever had, which was a gift this Christmas, won't get multi-tasking. That sucks, I guess. I don't know if I'd use it. I'll deal with not having it, and maybe someday I'll get the 3GS. No one dies. Life's not that bad. It's just a tech gadget for a company. You're a consumer. Buy it or don't - let your money tell Apple if you're unhappy with them. Complaining about it on the internet isn't constructive.

Sorry you feel that only drooling fanbois should have a voice. That kind of passive-aggressive fascism is the type of nonsense that makes many of us REAL Apple users angry. REAL Apple users, who have a brain and...thoughts...are what MADE Apple. Apple should listen instead of relying solely on prostitution dollars because they are the best-looking ugly whore. They should be striving toward excellence, not "barely better".

What's the UI diff between quiting Skype and turning off Skype notifications?

One thing that I wished someone ask about:
Will we be able to run several backgrounding API's at once?, so that I can stream music while using something like iMeet, and still ahve the music and location tracking on while sending a text.

I guess the keynote will be up on apple.com and itunes tomorrow...

Most ad systems on iPhone apps don't quite the app when you click them today. Of course leave to Jobs to make that sound revolutionary. Also, the new ad system isn't going to unify ads on the app store. They will certainly get lots of devs in the program. But app developers aren't going to be loyal to apple when it comes to ads. They will use whatever system gives them the most results.

Who clicks on ads anyway? I thought the only reason for ads on the iPhone is for you to see the name of whatever is advertised, and they made it clickable just in case you accidentally put your finder on the banner... Who would want to actually see MORE of an avert? I mean, if it would advertise something interesting, sure, but does that ever happen?

So let me get this straight.. the new OS still wont bring iPhone users complete multi-tasking, custom sms tones, still locked for sending items via bluetooth and no java/flash support... and you will be getting ads in your purchased apps?

"Shut up! WAHHHHHH!!"

Oh grow up. They did create their own phone...through jail-breaking. Most of the innovation of iPhone was forced upon Apple by people giving Jobs the finger and breaking the law and innovating in spite of Apple. Apple should do more shutting up and listening to its users.

What's the UI diff between quiting Skype and turning off Skype notifications?

Nothing, I guess, but Push notifications don't drain the battery, while multitasking probably does drain it enough to allow you to turn it off... At least with push notifications, you could still quit the app, and the notifications were managed in a separate thing on a server. But now with multi tasking, the app is actually still running (well, I don't quite get it, but I guess some components of the app are still running while others aren't), so technically you can't really quit an app? It's probably super simple but since I haven't seen it work yet, I don't quite get it!

Why, for the love of everything holy, can't the iPhone OS merge multiple contacts/calendars such as Android and Web OS. I will not, and cannot, return to the iPhone until this feature is present. Looks like I'll be hoping for new Palm hardware to keep me satisfied until this seemingly 'no brainer' feature is added to iPhone OS.

what are you talking about? it's called "all calendars" and "all contacts". What I wish they'd add to that is when you're viewing a contact that it shows you what group it's in.

Why is everyone complaining? The introduced features are fabulous implementations. Who doesn't want iBooks on the iPhone? Multitasking is as good as anyone could've imagined; not to mention Folders. And to top the cake, Apple has made their own gaming network, hopefully to replace +Plus and all the other craptastic ones.

But ultimately, this isn't the final OS. It was a preview! Expect more from the final product.

It can't work automatically unless the iPhone can quadruple its ram to save app states on in ram. The new API gives apps the ability to save data so they can restore their state. Unless the app is written with this new api, it would not have any idea how to restart in a state different than it's normal startup.

It could do if the OS handles all the details - I don't know but it could work like this: when an app is backgrounded the OS saves the app and it's state to the flash drive and terminates the app. When it's restored, it loads the state from the flash drive and restarts the app (like hibernating to disk on OS X / Windows).

and put that folder on a homescreen all on its own.

ohhh yesss, like on my old PC, there was this error message that kept coming up and I couldn't get rid of it, so I plugged an old CRT monitor into my laptop, dragged the error message onto the monitor, and then unplugged the monitor... problem solved!

I tend to agree, but why the delay for the iPad release? I haven't heard much speculation on that. Why would the iPad release be delayed? Why not release it at the same time or at least within a week or so of each other?

My speculation is that the ipad release will build on what is shown here. Sort of like a 4.1 release. In the Q&A Steve basically left open the possibility of seeing widgets on the ipad in the fall and that in turn could lead to possible widgets on the iphone as well.

Also, I'm sure there are other considerations that need to be taken into effect to the ipad's layout that they need the extra couple of months of development time. I'm sure the team working on 4.0 was not privy to the iPad until it was shown to the world. Only a few select people tweaking the OS enough to make it a 3.2 and making those specific ipad apps like mail, photo's etc. Knowing how secretive Apple is. So now they need to make changes to the core apps again for unified mail in the ipad, etc.

This gives roughtly 2 months as of today for the dev community to concentrate on making/enhancing iphone/ipod touch apps and then another two months to strictly work & tweak ipad apps/versions.
