Well, while Apple (or any business) is more or less a machine, you simply cannot deny that there are INDIVIDUALS who are responsible for any and all of the IDEAS. Yes, people will get replaced, and business will keep chuggin' along, but you can't replace personality, character and original ideas. You can substitue it for something else, but (for better or worse) you can't replace it.

My original question was not addressed, or answered.

If the guy doesn't want to be in Cupertino what's the point of trying to make him stay? If he is unhappy then his work will probably suffer.

He's the best designer this generation has and apple should bend over backwards to keep him around in ANY manner

Not such a great designer judging by this natty green hat. Let him go, I say..

The Magic lost Shaquille O'Neal in the mid 90's and never really recovered.

The Magic have never won anything more than a Conference championship.

In fact they have won the same number of Conference championships with Shaq as without him, and have actually won 1 more Division championship without him (3 Division champs without him, 2 with him).

So the stats say they have not only recovered, but they have improved without Shaq.

I say let him go, he's not the only designer on the planet. If he really wants to go back to England (I can't imagine why he would) Apple needs to show him the door. He's never going to have it as good as he did with Apple. If he's so homesick let the momma's boy go home. His designs all look the same anyway.

You know, that really is true. Have any of you considered the possibility that this might simply be a tactic to get more money.

I think he wanted to leave 3 years ago.
That's why he has the $30m golden handcuff deal in the first place.

He was probably fed-up with SJ and slow design development cycle in 2008, but they offered him a stack of cash he couldn't turn down.

"Probably."

Holds no water whatsoever.

it's the guy behind him that is wearing the green hat.

No, it is the guy behind him that is wearing a green shirt.

And on a more serious note, I seriously doubt that Apple would cease to exist, even if they were to lose both Ive and Jobs. The only constant is change.

On one note, I really want to try a Crunchie now. My biggest thrill last year was finding Zero bars back on the shelves here in the Northeast US. New candy is one of my favorite thrills of being alive. :D Ah, the little things.

I would send you guys some...but....you're calling it candy. It's CHOCOLATE, with a honeycomb filling. :p

My thoughts are that Apple can't survive a double whammy loss of Steve and Jonny. If they find a strong replacement for Jonny (if he leaves) and Steve is able to implant the "vision" to the new guy, they should be ok.

Entirely agreed with this quote.

True, my abbreviation for a Chocolate Bar is a Candy Bar, and even further, just calling it Candy. In the end, I'm actually wrong in that. So I have to ask, think you can you send some over? :D Pretty please? It sounds like a much better KitKat. There's truly nothing like it in the 'States that I know of.

It's not what I can do for you, but what you can do for me.

What's a Crunchie worth? A dollar? A Cadillac? Everyone has a price

I want to say that I am big fan of Jobs and Ive and I loved all of his designs.

With that, Ive isn't without fault. Many of his designs, while aesthetically pleasing, have been technical nightmares and have had problems. Someone mentioned it in another thread about iMac and MBP designs as far as replacing parts or harddrives. What about the Macbook discoloration and cracking? iPods catching on fire or was that Macbook Pro's? iPhone 4 antennas or glass breaking? Replace the battery in a iPad or iPhone? Nope, just swap it out. Some of the laptop designs are questionable (to me) as well, regarding soldering of SSD and CPU's chips and stuff like that.

I'm not sensationalizing these issues but they are real. Maybe a change in design is what we need. Keep it minimalistic but allow for more easier upgrading instead of these closed designs. I dunno what the solution is, but Jonny Ive is not without fault in a lot of these designs.

Ives acts in a directorship level position, meaning he oversees what goes on, he directs the process. He probably hasn't hand made a prototype in years. As a VP he's probably even less hands on and more directing the design efforts to suite the business direction Apple wants. If you really believe all the products we have seen are not "designs by committee" then you do not grasp corporate culture - even one as forward thinking as Apple's is presumed to be. Decisions about wether to surface mount components or allow for upgradability are not his alone to make.

What I suspect is really going on is he is not getting the nod for take over (which would be a unwise move on Apple's part anyway), so he is tossing his first lobby of threatening to "take his ball and go home". sorry Jonny, you're ball is made of aluminum foil, and has lost it's bounce. Can you really have faith in a grown man that cannot manage a clean shave?

Disaster for Apple if true

Looks like Jobs is toast so if Ive walks then Apple will be filing for bankruptcy protection within 3 years without the 2 men that made it what it is

Steve Jobs in general isn't a very nice person so working with him as long as Ive did must have taken its toll. In all honesty I would be surprised if Ive decides to stay with Apple. Ive holds all the cards here. Apple only has the money card to play with but there are most likely many companies that will match or do one better.

I'm sure that he would have several good job offers as soon as he left. He's the kind of guy most companies want. His time at Apple may be up, who knows? He's brought us a lot of good products and I hope he finds happiness at Apple or in his next venture.

You mean like this guy ?

He hasn't done too badly

I dunno, Steve seems to have an intentional growth, Ives seems like he can't decide to do a beard or shave. lol i just don't like him, and I think he's grossly overrated. Let's hear about this staff of designers, they have as much input as he does and yet they are unknowns. Must suck to be them, living in the shadows with a rockstar boss.

The irony is, isn't Jobs a Buddhist? Isn't that supposed to condone nasty behaviour and advocate being nice to anyone and everyone?

Anyway, Ive clearly isn't the only designer at apple, and for that matter a 'magical' one who's ideas clearly ousts any of the other designs from other staff. He seems to be way overstated and the rest are under the rug so to speak.

Conversely, nice to see a brit being successful.
