As a designer, I have always appreciated Jon Ive's contribution to the Iconic look of Apple's products.

But I am pretty sure, his low key and private approach to his work, he'd be MUCH happier in his design lab than dealing with the 945,723 headaches of trying to run and lead Apple after Steve's era. But definitely happy he's staying on, as far as reportage can tell.

Tim Cook seems much more likely, an appropriately cool head, even if not having Steve's aura of pure personality and drive.

Can anyone say what the first Apple product to have the Ive stamp on it was?

I'd go for the first iMac but the puck mouse was a fail for me. As was the Cube.

Because British people never tell Americans how to speak proper English do they... ;)

English people tell Americans how to speak proper English all the time.
Americans quite often tell Brits how to speak improper English.

I have my old iMac still on my desk because of the pleasure the design brings . "Nuff said ?

wtg, Daily Mail.

Ive turned Apple products into a thing of beauty. He basically put the beauty, awe and wow factor into Apple and is largely (if not mostly) responsible for Apple's success during the last decade. Jobs is a great man, no doubt (I mean he's done great things) but Ive is legendary.

My take, if Jobs died or left Apple they would continue as they currently are after an initial shock period. If Ive left however, Apple would be dead.

Think about it. He pretty much CREATED the iMac. The very first one was his design and he's been designing them ever since. Same with the iPod. Same with the iPhone. Same with the iPad. All his designs. Even the current Mac pros. Now, before Ive I would have said Apple computers were pretty plain. The only thing that really stood out was their OS. Since Ive, I'd say every little piece of an Apple computer contains the wow factor it all just works flawlessly well together.

Ive seriously doesn't get the credit he deserves. It's always Jobs people talk about, but Ive is the TRUE mastermind behind Apple imo.

He totally melts my butter!

ok, getting a little... biological.

But a little counterpoint...

Not to devalue Ive in any way, he's of course brilliant and accomplished and dedicated and all the rest of it, and being an Industrial Designer myself I'm a big fan, but, after all this time, and considering his status, his R&D team of designers and engineers should be pretty well in tune with his design philosophy and able to continue on without him should he leave. If he left, I don't think we'd see Apple products go to pot.

As well, I think the organization probably has a pretty good idea of the direction Jobs has been taking the company. I don't see him retiring off and the company not knowing what to do next. It'd be pretty reckless, and for a company of Apples stature & size, unthinkable.

There are a hell of a lot of brilliant minds in those buildings. Give em some credit.

Ive always known the real truth is that he would rather remain at Apple and have his weekly salary delivered in dump trucks.

That is pretty much it. My guess is that the salary deal and the tax exceptions from the UK income tax didn't work out at all for him.

In my mind, the two, Ive and Jobs, are an essential mix. Jobs gave Ive the full rein to take design to the max, but then Jobs does one thing more...

A great chef will admit that presentation is essential. That's where Jobs comes in. He knows how to milk the maximum "wow" out of the crowd when presenting new software or hardware.

Imagine, if you will, Steve Ballmer presenting any of the stunning Apple products with anywhere near the effect Jobs does.

No doubt how important this guy is to Apple. I'm glad to hear the rumors of his departure are false. Though i will say, my friends and I constantly imitate his advertising/promo videos describing somewhat ordinary features in an over the top way. Its just too easy...

[in English accent]
"When we designed the iPad box, our goal was to not only hold the iPad, but also the cords and written materials. And what we've achieved here is nothing short of revolutionary. With pinpoint precision, we crafted a box with 90 degree angles at EVERY corner. The top slides off with ease and is printed with a new retina ink invented specifically for this application. There is no other box like it in the universe. This modern, sophisticated design allows for an unbelievable experience when unboxing your new iPad. We may not have created the first box, but we were the first to perfect it."

The best parody of an Apple ad. :)

I just wish Jon-Jon would pronounce the word "aluminum" correctly.

I wish you'd spell it right ;)

I hate the Daily Mail, it's the worst newspaper in the UK, and commits the worst crime of a tabloid mascarading as a broadsheet. As Optimus Frag puts it, I wouldn't use it to wipe my bum. Even homeless people feel ashamed using it as bedding.
