See, even the crash screens are more elegant on a Mac. I'd rather look at this than a BSOD any day.

I've been using Macs for, what, 18 years? I've had 5/6 Macs in that time.

I didn't even know this type of screen EXISTED. I've never had a crash like this. Things have frozen, but I didn't know there was an actual crash screen.

you musnt be a very heavy user then, or you dont work with peripherals (no offense intended). i have found that i never get the "GSOD" when using the computer by itself - however if i plug in a few external USB hard drives, use a tablet or what have you then they present themselves more commonly.

my LaCie HD in particular likes to do it alot, not to anyone - never use a LaCie HD as an iTunes library storage doohicky... not good!

I'd just like to chime in and say that I think this is spot on.

When I owned Dell laptops running Windows, I frequented Dell forums. When I had an Xbox, I frequented Xbox/gamer forums. Now that I own a netbook running Windows XP, I frequent netbook/portable computing forums.

One of the best things about the mac community is the message board on the main apple site.

whenever i have had a problem or didn't lnow how to do things - someone sorted me out really quick.

It's a mark of a confident company that lets its users discuss its products so extensively.

But then i suppose mac users have less to moan about. :D

Man, with Microsoft's stranglehold on the market, my mom could have run Microsoft and equaled Ballmer's profits. The guy is a clown - an guaranteed face palm every time he opens his maw.

Are you ****ing serious? You have absolutely no idea on how business run do you? Do you really think that when a company has enough money it will run on its own?

Brotip: It wont. Look around, AIG, GM, Chrysler... I could go on all day.

Ha, not really. I do remember my dad saying our older machines would crash, but I never personally saw it. Of course, I wasn't allowed to use them for much more than playing Number Munchers and The Manhole, so maybe I just didn't use the older machines enough. It wasn't until I got the iMac to go to college with that I used it on a regular basis.

I've used Macs daily for the past 9 (an original iMac, 2 iBooks (though I accidentally killed one with Mountain Dew), and an iMac G5). I'm a graphic designer, doing mostly freelance. You're right, though, in that I don't use too many peripherals. I do have an external hard drive, a printer, and a Wacom tablet, but I only use them a couple times a month, if that, and they're never plugged in.

That stupid printer did give me a lot of trouble, in that my iMac tried to eat the disc. I had to install it on the old iBook. I think it may have had issues with 10.5, though.

Is it false advertising to say Mac's don't crash, when they obviously can and do? Everybody's so litigious these days, I could see people suing.

You cant except more from Apple fanboys. They think businesses run on their own; it's only Apple and Jobs that are genius.... lol

Same, I must have seen that screen a dozen or more so times in the last 18 months that I've converted to my MBP. Although I have noticed a pattern, it tends to happen when the system overheats. Interestingly enough, my previous very noisy Dell never had the problem of crashing since the fans were always running in full. However, that didn't stop it cause after a two years it did completely fry out and the one time I got the blue screen of death, it was not resolvable; it really was the computer's death. Let's see how long this MBP lasts. I guess I'd trade fairly frequent grey screens to one crippling blue screen.

What on earth were you doing to overheat your MBP??? Was it the new one or the old one (15 or 17 inch)? My 15 inch early 2009 MBP has yet to overheat, and I do abuse the thing with video rendering and game play.

At least the BSOD gives you some information. It looks like gibberish to most people, but if you know how to read it, you can usually figure out what actually went wrong. The Mac GSOD just says "Turn off your computer." Like when I tried to install Leopard on an iMac with 256 MB of RAM (not mine -- machine at work). The machine just freaked and showed that -- no indication whatsoever that the problem was not enough RAM.

Really. Have you ever complained if something don't works? They delete the thread. There is no discussion allowed if you have a problem. They are like communist china or WWII nazis.

While some threads complaining about problems are deleted, others aren't. A quick perusal of the discussion forums shows plenty of threads covering problems.

For example:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1816912&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2005975&tstart=0

So, it's not that cut-and-dry.

I have seen plenty of threads discussing problems.

And I have been on enough message boards to know that most deletions are not about WHAT is said, but HOW it is said.

If you p.ss and moan like a spoiled brat - your posts will usually get pulled whether your complaint is serious or spurious.

I am sure apple has some issues it wants to cover up.
Maybe some cheap components with a high fail rate.

But when my iPhone headphone switch packed up after 6 months - they sent me a replacement before they wanted the old ones back.

That must have cost them dearly, it's in their interest to fix the problem.

They could pretend it doesn't exist. But a reputation for quality is as good as your worst product.

Apple isn't MS. It can't afford to take it's Market share for granted.

Acording to Consumer Reports they do.

You need to actually read the consumer reports article, which found the Macs to be no better than other PC makers when it comes to reliability.

Specifically, of Sony, Lenovo, Compaq, and Toshiba, 18% needed repairs or had serious problems.

20% of Dell, Gateway, and Apple computers needed repairs or had serious problems.

21% of HP computers needed repairs or had serious problems.

The margin of error is 3%, so all computers have about the same reliability.

CR did rank mac laptops above PC laptops. But this wasn't due to reliability (which, as mentioned above, was a wash), but due to matters like performance, weight, ease of use, etc.

Is this true????? They really delete threads that are about users having a problem??

You're kidding? I genuinely cannot believe this! I shall dine out on this all year :)

Next thing, all the users with problems will be wearing armbands and living in a Genius Bar Ghetto in the basement of the Apple store.

No wonder Apple have this super high customer satisfaction rate.. I bet they delete anyone who doesnt think otherwise!!!

Interesting.. you guys like this attitude??

Hmmm, on the first page of the apple PB 17" discussion thread there are 2 threads discussing this - with 400 posts and 30,000 views.

Hardly Mao-esque censorship is it?
